Janet's song was out two-three years before. Everything you said just confirmed that the end of her career came with Head Over Heels.

This is probably my all time favorite Paula song! The production and Paula's vocal are crazy!

Vibeology reached #19 and it also had one of the worst VMA performances in history, so bad that the performance was cut of the program in re-runs along with performace nearly broke up Poison

First of all, I think this is probably my favorite Paula Abdul song ever. Musically speaking, it's the most daring, risk-taking thing she's ever done. This was taking many cues from the early days of House, while at the same time borrowing stuff from the British version of House, which at the time was already fast-moving to a more Rave-friendly vibe, in which twisted voice-work was one of its more widely used components. Having said this, there are at least three reasons why this song didn't do too well on the American charts. For starters, this song will be forever associated with that admitedly disastrous performance at the 1991 VMA's, where all that could go dissynchronized did! On the other hand, this wasn't - and still isn't today - an example of typical radio-friendly fare, since it doesn't have neither the standard verse-chorus-verse song structure or a crystal clean-type production. In fact, this sounds very much leftfield to the audience she was reaching back then. And last but not least, let's not forget another factor at hand: by the time this was bravely released as a single - late 1991, early 1992 -, the music landscape was changing. Nirvana, anyone?

Not even that the performance itself was so awful, but what she was wearing was painful to look at. www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8A02suR1Go

LOL, "Vibeology" didn't kill her career. She was still a major star and Spellbound was considered a resounding success. The thing that killed her career was "My Love Is For Real" and everything associated with the Head Over Heels album. Yup! So true. I actually liked Vibeology at the time of its release. When I heard My Love Is For Real I knew it was the beginning of the end.

vibeology? now i ask, what does it mean?
this is probably my favorite paula song. so funky. but not pushing it. it was something you could see in her all along, then pow. i didn't realize that folks didn't enjoy My Love Is For Real. i thought that was an amazing song!!! i liked Crazy Cool as well, but it wasn't my favorite.
and i wont lie, the VMA performance was horrible... but i gotta give the girl credit for even being able to talk/breathe doing all that extreme dancing. no wonder so many lipsynch.

Well, I liked this song when I was 12. I don't think I'd think very highly of it if I heard it today. 10-years-ago me is totally wrong. I would crank this up if I heard it today. This song is ridiculous but that's what makes it fun.

I would say that her music career was still big when this was out.
It's just that by 1995 when Head over Heels was out, Paula's brand of pop really fell out of public favor and even if she had the best song in it, her hit making time was on the way out.
This probably wasn't released as a song where it was released as a fanfare chart topper or anything like that. I actually don't think following WYMM after Blowing Kisses would have brought more momentum to the album, as I think the public would have been bored with consecutive ballads from her.
Hot mess but kind of fun I guess.

I went to 90's night at a club this weekend and the DJ played this. IT FUCKING SLAYED THE DANCEFLOOR. I will never understand the hate for this song, although I do prefer the album version.

I don't get the hate for this one either. This is song is fun, funky, and quirky. I like this more than "The Promise of a New Day" (her last #1 hit).

Does anyone remember how this performance bombed at the 1991 MTV VIdeo Music Awards?

Haha, unfortunately, that performance is very tied to that song and a lot of people's memory of it. I remember watching it during the original airing. Of course I was young and loved Paula, so I didn't think it was terrible, but it was pretty much lambasted across the board by everyone, ending up on some MTV worst of countdowns over the years. I remember Kurt Loder especially thought it was awful.
Rewatching it now, I can honestly say I've seen far worse. Not a complete debacle, just did not connect at all.

this has always been a fav of mine. I do think that U would probably have been a better choice for a single.
does anyone else remember when RUPAUL did a cover of this song? I used to actually have it on CD but cant find it. I wish it was on the internet somewhere!

Wow! I didn't know this was hated so much! I was surprised when following AT40 and seeing it stalling while I thought it could reach top 5... I really liked it and reached #2 in my personal chart--she had already had 3 #1s so this was my 4th favorite song of hers. Back home dance music was becoming more popular with techno, etc. I saw this as a middle point between Good vibrations and Everybody's free to feel good. Loved the production, the messiness, the Go Paula's, the operatic/religious Vibeology chant. Smash! I just watched the AMAs performance for the first time. What was the big fuss? Compared that performance with those that Britney, Rihanna, Katy and Taylor have made live-without dancing- and I can't criticize Paula at all!
