They were like the Captain & Tenille of the 80's even though they only got one big hit. The group consisted of George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam who wrote Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody". They hit #5 on the Hot 100 with this track. It was actually also originally written for Whitney Houston but turned down by Arista.
Cheesy as hell, but catchy 80's fluff.

I really like this song too! I got the mp3 a few years back after hearing it, I think, as an LDD on AT40 because I knew the song from when I was younger!

I have loved this song so much since the first time I heard it. I had no clue that they wrote songs and that this was written for Whitney. It would've be interesting to see how Whitney well would've done with it

George and Shannon were inspired to write the song while watching Whitney perform in concert.
I love it!

LOL... although from the title alone, I can see how that could be misconstrued.

I liked it then and I like it now - still not tired of it! I liked a few of their other songs too - they hit the Top 40 before this with a song called "Oh Girl" which was also good, but not as memorable.
Boy Meets Girl also wrote another classic Whitney track "How Will I Know"... so they're still making money on those songs at least!

I did not care for this song when it first came out because I think I was starting to discover House music at the time, however, when I started working at the bar around early 90 or so, I bought a used vinyl copy of this album and played it frequently during my 80s sets. And listening to it, I really got an appreciation for this song that I didn't have upon its release. I play it now a few times a year as part of my personal living playlist, It's on one of the Rhino 80s CDs I think, or maybe it's the "Living In Oblivion" comps. But yeah, great call Josh, it's great to see you expand your tastes even more than I coulda imagined.

Yeah, it was pretty cheesy, but I still bought the single. I remember that it did well on American Top 40's Top 100 of 1989 (top 10 I believe), but didn't even make Casey's Top 40 of 1989.

Songs like this and those Starship songs that used to get played as LDD's on CT40 absolutely make my skin crawl. So cheesy.

I don't understand, why did Casey only do a Top 40 in 1989? The countdown for the week before was a regular weekly countdown. He did do a Top 40 of the 1980s but that was an extra show, run at a special time (unless some stations decided to pre-empt the weekly chart for the weekend of 12/23/89 in order to run the decade end chart instead). Anyway, the song probably would have made that Top 40 of 1989 had it been figured using the song's entire chart run like Billboard. But even now, R&R still goes on a strict schedule, counting only points gained within the chart year. Oh yeah, my opinion on the song - pretty good.

George and Shannon were inspired to write the song while watching Whitney perform in concert. Jealousy? :oNo, one of them (I believe it was Shannon) happened to be looking up in the sky and saw a shooting star. She scrawled the phrase "waiting for a star to fall" on a piece of paper and showed it to George, saying, "This would be a great title for a song". Strangely enough, their next single was "Bring Down The Moon". Was Shannon stargazing at another concert and saw the moon getting bigger as it dipped below the horizon? Or did George drop his trousers in disdain for the performer they were seeing?

This was a song I hated at first, but as time went by, it slowly started sinking in. I haven't it in quite some time now.

Absolutely LOVED this song when it came out and still do today... One of my top 10 favorite songs of the 80's for sure... This was one of those 45's that I played over and over and over... and I never burned out on it! Of course, soon after that I got it on CD... then managed to find their first CD with "Oh Girl"...
Some "BMG" history for you all if you don't know... they actually ended up getting married, then separated.... they still remain good friends to this day though.

I discovered this song after Cabin Crew and Sunset Strippers made their little remakes of this.
The original song is just okay.

The Sunset Strippers version is great, the Cabin Crew is blah, and IMO, the original is ...awesome.
And ironically, I was listening to the PLJ All Request Lunch hour about an hour after I posted this...and what do you know...someone called in a requested it!!!

I LOVE IT! There's a mash-up of sorts that fuses this song with "Bette Davis Eyes."

I LOVE IT! There's a mash-up of sorts that fuses this song with "Bette Davis Eyes." what your talking about is most likely 'in my arms' by mylo. not really a mash-up,,,samples only the words 'in my arms, yeah yeah' and then a sample from 'betty davis eyes' is used,,along with a really coool electro beat.

Cheesy as hell, but catchy 80's fluff. Yep, I liked this well enough when it was new, but I haven't listened to it in years.
