Noticing this particular single, also from "Monster", mentioned a lot in the "WTF, K?" post, I thought it worthy to start a new topic on this hit second single from the same album.
Though I don't like it as much as "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" or many of their other songs, it truly has an awesome rock edge.
It is not exactly clear what this song is about, but to me it sounds more straight-forward; the whole blaming game in relationships, the whole "kiss and tell" massacre. Michael Stipe rants of how some people get usurped into these messes so easily, even the faintest and most sensitive of hearts, and too many fall victim, including those who say, "It's not my thing so let it go" timidly.
Have differing interpretations? Overall thoughts on this song?
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Great song! Reminds me of the late winter of 1994. It sounds a little like "Witness" by Cyndi Lauper from her "She's So Unusual" LP.

So-so. Not amongst my favorite REM songs.

I don't see why people hate on Monster compaired to their other cds, but its one of my favorite R.E.M. cds, and with that said, I love Bang and Blame. The guitars on this album and in the song are incredible.

Not a big fan of REM, but this is my favorite by them (barely over "Leaving New York").

This is my favorite (or second favorite) R.E.M. song. I also love the one where they sing "the greatest thing since bread came sliced," although the title is escaping me. It was on AT20 back in 2001.

"The Great Beyond"? Anyway, I heard "Bang and Blame" last week. I realize that I already gave my opinion on it two years ago, but I preferred their previous hit, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" over this one.

Eh, I'm not a fan of this track. The verses are bland and although the song starts to pick up when the chorus hits, the hook is not even really that strong. "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" is easily my favorite from that album.

Bang and Blame reached #19 on the Hot 100 in 1995

They're one of my favorite bands, and I like this song, but it wouldn't be among my 20 favorite songs by them. Post-"Monster", singles I prefer include "The Great Beyond", "E-Bow The Letter", "Imitation of Life", and "At My Most Beautiful".

One of my favorite REM songs, easily. That production with Michael's voice is a very specific mood, especially at the beginning of the song.

I like this but I think the chorus doesn’t totally live up to the verses
