Nope....not to be confused with father of the infamous Jacksons. I used to have the album back in the 80s with this song. It went to #6 Pop and I believe it went a little higher in AC in 1982. Great song to cruise to back then. Joe has always have an everchanging music style that I can relate to. Other songs also include:
Is She Really Going Out With Him in 1979 (now used in the new ABC sitcom "I'm With Her")
Breaking Us In Two in '83 (only went to #18)
and my personal favorite, You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What you Want) in '84 (#15)

Yeah, this was also a hit at AOR, at least on Jackson's (MS) original AOR station WZZQ. I liked the tune.
ISRGOWH was probably my favorite Joe Jackson song. I don't know anything about the TV show you mentioned, but I'm sure you know that this song was recently covered (rather well, I suppose, but the original is still the best) by Sugar Ray.

One of my favorite songs of the '80s... good video, too.

Cool song. I think Jackson had a AAA hit with "Awkward Age" in 2003. I remember hearing that song quite a bit on WXPN.

Good song, I still hear it all the time. Sadly, "Awkward Age" didn't make the AAA chart... I think it got stuck in N&A. He also had a song in 01 called "Stranger Than You" that I liked, not sure how well it did on the charts though.

Is this the song that mentions "blue bird"? Nope... Now - The mist across the window hides the lines But nothing hides the colour Of the lights that shine Electricity so fine Look and dry your eyes
We - So tired of all the darkness in our lives With no more angry words to say Can come alive Get into a car and drive To the other side
CHORUS: Me babe - steppin out Into the night Into the light You babe - steppin out Into the night Into the light
We - Are young but getting old before our time We'll leave the t.v. and the radio behind Don't you wonder what we'll find Steppin out tonight
You - Can dress in pink and blue Just like a child And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile We'll be there in just a while If you follow me
CHORUS Video

First heard this one as part of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's Flash FM pop channel. Thought it was cheesy but didn't hate it either. More recently, I started hearing it on old episodes of Casey Kasem's "American Top 40" and have grown to like it.

40 years ago, Steppin' Out debuted at #88 on the August 21, 1982 Billboard Hot 100.

^ In a bit of funny timing, the Number Ones column that came out yesterday highlighted that the "I'm not like them" bit from NSync's "It's Gonna Be Me" was inspired by "Steppin' Out."
