I heard this song in a TV commercial the other day, but I can't remember the product that was being pitched. It's one of the Who's lesser known tunes but I think it was their first American hit single. It was quickly dwarfed in popularity by some more serious tracks from this and other Who records (Happy Jack is from 'A Quick One'), but I've always loved this little song about a man who lives a hard life and has to put up with abuse from young kids, yet who somehow always remains upbeat.
I remember when I was growing up some of the kids thought this song was kinda "sissy" for the Who, but I always liked it anyway. It's got some unusual guitar riffs and drum beats; it's well worth checking out even if you're not a Who fan.

I remember when I was growing up some of the kids thought this song was kinda "sissy" for the Who... haha, whooops, could I have been one of those kids? DA!!!---DA Daaaaaa! They're All Wasted!!!!!!! The Kids Are Alright is coming out soon I think in some special edition DVD (or it's just come out, or i'm just imaging things.) The movie serves as the typical soundtrack to my dateless, loveless, acne infested, reefer riddled friday nites when me and about 10 other dateless wonders would see this at midnite. As for "Happy Jack", I always thought the song was about an autistic child who wasn't aware of his surroundings. I like it, it was well structured for a mid 60s pop hit for sure, but I am not the biggest Who fan around either, and like many more of their songs b4 this one. I remember getting into the Tommy album when I was a wee lad. That album, and every Beatles release, both Woodstock releases, Cat Stevens, and if we really wanna stretch it, Janis Ian, were about the only rock-pop oriented things my daddy listened to way back in the day. As for the commercial, it's running in the Hummer ad where the kid builds a boxcar Hummer and then cuts through rough terrain to win a race.

This was believe it or not the Who's first top 40 hit peaking at #24 in 1967.
