This is not a great song, but I like it. I remember the first time I heard it was at a school dance. (I didn't watch AI1)... The lyrics are kinda cheesy... and the production is dated... but that is kinda the appeal of this song to me. It's the last old-school ballad of it's type to impact Pop radio like it did... even if it was a novelty.

Kelly is the only reason I like this song. I don't know if that makes sense, but this song is mediocre and Kelly saves it from being awful with her vocals. If Justin Guarini sang this song, it would be DOA.

If Justin Guarini sang this song, it would be DOA. WORD. The AI coronation songs are all really bad, and it's a testament to the talent of some of the contestants that they've still managed to have careers even after being stuck with such garbage for their first single. This was the only one of those songs to make a significant impact on radio, peaking at #4 on both Pop and AC and #8 on Hot 100 Airplay. That being said, Kelly's post-victory rendition when she just kept crying in the middle of the song will always leave me a little choked up. The music video was actually pretty nice-clips of Kelly's AI journey mixed in with some performance footage in which she looked really good.

This song is so cheesy but for some reason (Kelly Clarkson), I love this track so much...I would even say it's one of my favorite's ever. When she sang this at the finale of AI and cried in the middle, I shed tears..I'll admit it :'(

Aww, I like it. (Although I do remember hating it the first time I heard the song, b/c Justin sang it first on the finale. Then Kelly sang it and I loved it. Who knew?) At least it's better than "Before Your Love" Objectively I guess it's not that good. It pisses me off how they gave them that non-radio friendly, sappy music because they knew that Kelly, et. al.'s voices could save them. Take someone like Britney or Ashlee; they can't sing, but they were given really good songs. So the AI'ers already have one strike against them. I do think it's radio success was largely a function of it's novelty. Kelly was the first (and at the time, only) AI contestant out there. By the time Ruben and Clay came out with their coronation songs, you already had "Miss Independent", along with Justin Guarini's album. To me the AMLT video looked somewhat cheap - the performance portion was very nicely done, but the Idol footage smacked of 19's involvement. It's definitely the best coronation vid tho. Ruben was stuck in front of a fountain, and they actually added audio when they showed the clip of when he won. Clay's video was never released (but has leaked out in certain sources ;) ), and neither Fantasia or Diana got one to begin with.

At least it's better than "Before Your Love" I actually like Before Your Love better. I think it's less cheesy to me because the lyrics can't really be applied to winning AI.

I really wish Kelly had started off with a different song. It was totally forgettable and dull, and it minimized her potential. Put that together with "being the one from AI" (a permenant negative character trait), and I hated it. She's done a little better job of proving herself lately, though.

It's a little sappy but not awful. She's certainly done a lot better.

Oh sh*t. I just realized that all those songs have thinly-vieled lyrics about winning American Idol, even the runner-ups. OK, that's messed. I still like them though.
did you see the VH1 commercials that used BYL as background music for that show about Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen's love affair? Hee.

LOL Flying Without Wings is really the only one that doesn't have the easily applicable lyrics (perhaps because it was originally a Westlife song and wasn't written specifically for the winner of the show).

For curiosity's sake... how did Flying Without Wings do on the charts? I heard it all the time... but I live in Birmingham.

I like it although it gets overplayed on AC radio.

I love this. Much better than "Miss Independent", which got old really fast.

I like this and think it's easily the best debut single to come from an Idol winner (though that isn't saying much). This is one of Kelly's best vocals on a single too, imo. She sounds so beautiful.

A Moment Like This debuted #1 on the Hot 100 in 2002 and was recently a chart-topper for Leona Lewis who won the X-factor late last year
