Bill Withers is probably remembered best for "Lean On Me" and "Ain't No Sunshine," two songs which I don't particularly like. But I think his 1972 hit "Use Me" is his strongest single by leaps and bounds. It was actually the follow up single to "Lean On Me" and was culled from the same album, Still Bill. "Use Me" is a really organic sounding R&B record with a simple, but memorable guitar riff and incredible percussion. The tune's been remade several times; I think the best remake was by Hootie, but the original is still ten times better. Come to think of it, Many of Bill's records have been covered. Me'Shell NdegeOcello remade "Who Is He (And What Is He To You)," Gil Scott Heron did "Grandma's Hands," Club Nouveau did "Lean On Me," Luther Vandross remade "Lovely Day." I could go on forever. That's probably why this guy got inducted into the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame last year. Hot 100: #2(2 weeks) R&B: #2(2 weeks)

Whitney Houston remade "Greatest Love Of All," So did Bill record that before or after George Benson? ;) I love "Use Me".

"Use Me" is OK. My favorite from Bill Withers is "It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day". I don't remember Luther Vandross remaking it, but S.O.U.L. System did a sample/remake of it in the early 90s. Michelle Visage was a part of S.O.U.L. System after she left Seduction.

I love this. My friends and I constantly blast this in the car when we're all together. However, we all erroneously call the song "Use Me Up."

This, "Lovely Day", "Just The Two of Us", "Who is He (And What Is He to You)" and "Grandma's Hands" are all classics.

It has its place, but it pales in comparison to Lovely Day and Ain't No Sunshine for me. I do think he's severely underrated, though. Someone who deserves a lot more credit than he's given. I keep hoping for him to pop up on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's ballot every year but it's yet to happen.

He may end up being one of those artists that won't be considered for the R&R HOF until he passes away, kind of what happened to Donna Summer. Not really trying to compare the two, but sometimes people doesn't realize how valuable & talented a person was during their prime until they leave us for good. It weird, but happens quite often.
