I hope she has some other fans here. She was 1/4 of the Mama's & the papa's but she also had a moderately succesful solo career. I reccomend everyone download 'Make your own kind of music' (US #36) 'It's getting better' (UK #8 US #30) her definitive rendition of 'Dream A Little dream of me' (UK #11, US #12) and 'California Earthquake' (US #67)
I got a budget-priced compilation of her solo work and she was truly underrated. I really hope some other people here will check her out.

I really know nothing of her solo career. However, I think some of the Mama's and Papa's songs are pretty good. They 're a really obscure group nowadays, but came out with some good stuff in the mid-late '60's.

OMWord... did that funny black girl in the movie "Beautiful Thing" sing Mama Cass songs? I didn't know who Mama Cass was, but that girl was hilarious in the movie! I didn't understand a word she said.

Yes, she did. Mama Cass records are used throughout that movie. "it's getting better" is played at the beginning, "Make your own kind of music" when jamie & Ste are kissing in the forest, and "Dream a little dream" when they dance at teh end. Also, Leah (the funny black girl) sings "One way ticket" to jamie near the start, then plays it really loud so trevor will come up.

The Mamas and the Papas were a great group.

Wow, I didn't know "Beautiful Thing" had a huge Mama Cass overtone! I remember the mom saying to Leah something like 'You're too young to like Mama Cass' or something. And didn't she dress up as Mama Cass and tried to cross the street or something... she was kind of crazy.
The only reason I didn't like the movie that much was because the ending was so abrupt and made me feel cheated. Perhaps the ending was meant to be like that. I prefer "Get Real" over "Beautiful Thing," although both have their moments.

She may be under-rated today, but the Mamas and the Papas were anything but under-rated in the late 60s and early 70s. Mama Cass usually sang lead and was by far the most famous member of the group. The reason she and the group were so well-known at the time has a lot to do with the nature of television in those days. Most towns only had the major networks, plus maybe one or two independent stations. Cable TV was fairly common in smaller cities that didn't have TV stations of their own but there was little choice beyond the broadcast network offerings. The major networks back then consisted of NBC, CBS and ABC.
Point is that there were only a few choices of what to watch, and variety shows were extremely popular. The Mamas and the Papas made frequent appearances on all of the most popular shows, so even those folks who never turned on a radio would have known of them and would probably have been familiar with a few of their songs.
And what great songs! To name a few: Creeque Alley, Monday, Monday, California Dreamin' (their biggest hit single, I think), and Go Where You Wanna Go. One song stands out in my memory as being totally unlike anything else by them: Dancing Bear. The M&Ps also did one of the better versions of Dancin' In The Streets.
The folk-style harmonies that are so characteristic of this music fell out of favor with the rise in popularity of hard rock and funk music in the early to mid 70s. That's probably the biggest reason that Mama Cass struck out on her own.

Although I've never heard any of her solo work, I did hear a lot of The Mamas and the Papas because my mom played it a lot when I was growing up.
I remember when Cass was on a 2-part episode of "Scooby Doo."

In terms of total weight she was 3/4 of the mamas and papas. LOL. I'm mad at myself for laughing at fat jokes about her. Like the rumor she died from choking on a ham sandwich.

A friend recommended it to me and I watched it and fell in love with the music. I ran out right after seeing it and bought a Greatest Hits cd. I've been listening to it quite a bit. She really did have some amazing songs. The week after I bought it, Make Your Own Kind Of Music was on an episode of Lost. I never would have realized it was her, had I not watched Beautiful Thing.
