What gold and platinum single certifications surprised you the most? I can think of a few examples:
In 1991 when the price of singles rose to $3.49, platinum singles were kind of sparse. I remember "I Wanna Sex You Up," by Color Me Badd making the platinum certification. I could hardly believe to see that it went double platinum (2 million singles sold.)
1983-"Juicy Fruit" by Mtume. The song only hit number 45, but sold a million copies. In 1986 when gold singles (million sellers at the time) were really a rarity, "Superbowl Shuffle" by Chicago Bears Shuffling Crew made the certification level, by only peaked at number 48.
In 1989 the gold single certification level dropped to 500,000 units. The first chart of 1989 to include certifications with the new standard, "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys was certified platinum. Couldn't believe it, since there were only 2 million sellers total in 1988.

Yes, Jond7699, I wish it would too. I just couldn't believe the way labels decided to phase out singles. I just couldn't believe it. When I started buying 45's in the mid 70's, they were priced at $0.99. You didn't hear anything about cannibalization then. When singles were priced at $3.49, and very few were getting certified platinum, that's when the labels started whinning about lost album sales. Go figure. It was late 1989 when I first heard about the cannibalization theory. There were about 8 million sellers that year, up to that point. Not even close to a year like 1979, when there were at least 50 million sellers, and 10 singles that sold 2 million.
I could hardly wait to look at Billboard each week, to see if there were any new certifications. I sure miss those days!

"Juicy Fruit" hit #1 on the Black Singles chart, though. So did "I Wanna Sex You Up" (well it was R&B Singles by then), as well as #2 on the Hot 100.
The only surprising thing is how huge the discrepancy between "Black Singles" and "Pop Singles" was-- #1 on one and barely top 50 on the other was so common.

I think I remember seeing a gold cert next to "One Nation Under A Groove" when it was in 30s, same with Chuck Brown and Soul Searchers "Bustin' Loose" and wondering how it was possible when both were so low on the charts.

Well, I just got a new surprise. I just checked the latest gold and platinum singles certifications on Billboard's website. I hadn't checked for several months because there never are any. But I just found that 45 singles were certified gold in October.
Upon further research, I found that these are gold and platinum mp3 certifications. I can hardly believe the criteria: 100,000 downloads for a gold mp3, and 200,000 for platinum! That's rediculously low in my book.

At the bottom of the list is says: The Record Industry Association of America awards gold certifications for singles sales over 500,000. Platinum single certifications are awarded for 1 million units, with additional millions of sales as noted.

Yeah, Billboard hasn't updated the legends on their Certifications page to reflect the new mp3 awards (even though they are listing them). Also see the note at the top of the list, also pre-mp3 certs:

So, do MP3 certifications count as regular certifications?
Say, an artist has 10 Gold or Platinum singles (from CD and Cassette sales, of course) - if they were to get another Platinum certification for an MP3 track, would that make it 11 Gold singles, despite one being for a legal MP3?
I just want to know if they separate it or if it all gets added together with older certs. Janet Jackson recently got certified Platinum for a LIDROCK single (I'm not sure of what the requirements for that cert were) and I'm so confused because people act like it doesn't count with her other Gold and Platinum singles just because of its format.

Yes. I've never heard of LIDROCK certifications. I thought those were free, but I know DVD singles and MP3s definitely count.

Yeah, I got it free with the purchase of my soda at a movie theater (it was the single for I Want You). But somehow, they got it certified with the RIAA for Gold and Platinum. I'm wondering if that means 1,000,000 Lidrock CDs were shipped to theaters or what. It seems really odd, but I hope it counts with her other Gold and Platinum singles, too.

A certification for a free CD that comes with a soda purchase? I doubt it. Where did you se that it was platinum?

It was out of this HUGE mistake by the record companies that arose the online sharing services like Kazaa, Napster, etc... It was the record companies own greed and short-sightedness (phasing out the single) which caused illegal P2P sharing to thrive... Thankfully now, the single is an option again (via online downloads) and at .88-.99 per song it's much cheaper than the vinyl or CD singles that we used to purchase... I long for the old days too... but at least we now have options other than illegal downloads and spending $15 for 1 song...

When Madonna's three 80 singles were certified Gold in October 1998:
Borederline (1984) Papa Don't Preach (1986) True Blue (1986)

I'm surprised a LOT of singles weren't certified, but among more recent tunes:
Do me!-Bell Biv DeVoe (and Poison went platinum) I love your smile-Shanice Wild night-Mellencamp/Me'Shell Have you ever really loved a woman-Bryan Adams If your girl only knew-Aaliyah

I was shocked when I saw that "All Of Me" was certified 8x platinum a few months ago, yet it still hasn't sold even 7 million copies. I think somebody jumped the gun.

A billion YouTube views will do that. Thank God Billboard didn't count YouTube views when that was out.
