Instead of asking who rememebers this song, I'll ask this: who would like to forget this song? In the beginning, it was so addictive and I had liked it, then it got on my last nerve when every station on the area was playing it. Especially the Bayside Boys Remix. The whole "I'm not trying to seduce you" sample that would come in every so often was annoying. I'll admit I did the dance, but now I wouldn't do it if I was paid to. I don't care what anyone says...this song still rules! The dance was kinda stupid though.

It's a great/fun song, it just shouldn't have been the 14 week #1. That's just pushing it.

It was OK. Sampled the voice of Allison Moyet from Yaz. Can't remember which song though.
I think the "I'm not trying to seduce you" phrase was from "The Graduate," which was also used in "Too Funky" by George Michael.

And yep, that's Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson doing the "seduce" line.

I heard "Situation" by Yaz a couple years after hearing "Macarena". I thought the "Situation" track was new then because I hadn't heard of it yet and though that they sampled it from "Macarena." It turned out it was the other way around.

I still think it's a good song. Hey, it did sell over 4 million copies, one of the best selling singles of all time.

It was an instant number one on my charts in 1995, before the label decided to retry this on radio for a second time.

Never had anything against the song but anyone who tried to copy that dance with it is stupid.
And I'm tired of watching Vh1 overrate the impact this song had. It barely even hit the top ten, for christ's sake. Just one nostalgic 90's list that doesn't have this at #1 is all I ask.

Maybe crash is referring to the R&R pop chart (where it peaked at #10), but that's hardly a reflection of its overall impact in 1996 (hell, even some of the presidential candidates that year were doing it). You couldn't escape it, no matter how hard you tried.

Then, don't watch their 40 Most Awesomely Bad #1 Songs show. It was an instant number one on my charts in 1995, before the label decided to retry this on radio for a second time. That reminds me of the story behind this song. As it goes, I believe the first time it was released, it did nothing at all. Then the Bayside Boys remixed it, and that's when it grew to where no one could escape it. Like Lou Bega's "Mambo #5", despite all the badmouthing of this song, I can't help but like it.

I believe it was the biggest selling single of 1996.

I liked the Los Del Mar version of this better than the Los Del Rio version...

Definitely suffered from overkill back then, but now I enjoy hearing it.

Luckily, none of the radio stations that I listened to played this song, so I didn't have the pleasure of growing tired of this song. U93 had become sort of like a Hot AC station in the mid-90s. They reverted back to the Top 40 format around the beginning of 1998.
Hence, the only times I heard this was on the countdowns.

If you grew up on the 90's and you hated this song, you're a liar. This was THE jam of the 90's.

It indeed was inescapable and definitely was a pop-culture moment- but, after it left the charts, it didn't leave much of an impression. Remember "Macarena Christmas"?

Honestly, the way I heard it on radio that summer and later, I would have thought its airplay was close to that of its Hot 100 run. I imagine lots of people bought the single who weren't going to buy the album anyway. The Bayside Boys Remix, which is the famous one, really did the lifting for the song. Song is better than the dance.

Interesting to see how Radio didn't fully embrace this song, much like Gangnam Style more recently. Why did this barely scrape the top 10 on pop radio?
