How great is this song? I'm so glad Ashanti sang thing on American Dreams last year, or else I would have never heard it! It's even better than "(Fa Sho) That's What Friends Are For"! It makes me wanna buy one of her several GH albums. None of them were cheap (cheep) enough at Amoeba Records, though. (My mom likes Dionne, too! "She had a really nice voice." Tru dat!) You can download a snippet of Ashanti's version of the song here. :)

I know Dionne's is the definitive version, but I actually like Aretha's take on the song better. It's been covered by a ton of people.

I loved Sybil's version from 1989. I think Cyndi Lauper just recorded a dance version?

I loved Sybil's version from 1989. I think Cyndi Lauper just recorded a dance version? Dances mixes were just sent to clubs, but the version on her album is a piano ballad.

Classic all the way!! Dionne is one of those great vocalists that get lost in the shuffle of Aretha-Patti-Gladys. I think Natalie Cole and Dionne are more alike IMO, but Dionne is one of my favs.
Her version is the DEFINITIVE version, although I like Sybil's and Patti LaBelle's.

It's either that or you were referring Aretha's rendition of I Say A Little Prayer, also performed by Dionne. I don't think I recall Lady Soul re-making that song. There's also another musical note some of you overlooked. Isaac Hayes did his overly-extended 11 minute version of the song (the same one Ashanti used for Rain On Me).

Nope Aretha did do a version of "Walk On By". As for the song that's sampled in "Rain On Me," it's "The Look Of Love". "Walk On By" was used in the Notorious BIG's "Warning".

This song is a classic.
Growing up, Dionne was a joke to me, mainly because of the Psychic Hotline thing. But I've definately come to appreciate her as a vocalist. All of those Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs have been remade countless times, and yet hers are still the definitive versions IMO. That's saying quite a bit.

Walk On By reached #6 in 1964 for Dionne Warwick

Classic tune by a classic artist. This is the best version of the song despite the many remakes.
