Not Mariah's greatest song, but I was still happy to see it go to #1. She was having a good streak of chart-toppers and I was happy it was continuing.
It made an impressive 24-notch leap on the weekend of May 30, 1992 (CT40). :o

Great song...
My favorite part is when somebody in the audience starts clapping really loudly to the beat near the beginning... then after a few lines you hear one more loud clap offbeat, and nothing more. Almost as if a stagehand went down and told the clapper to shut up. Makes me laugh every time I hear it!

It spent eight weeks at #1 on Shadoe Stevens' AT40. On the 9/6/1992 edition of AT40 it was the biggest dropper of the week moving 19-26.

Although the song wasn't that great, I was happy to see Mariah have another #1 hit in both Billboard and R&R. At the time, only one other woman had topped the Hot 100 under the new methodology (Vanessa Williams).

Mariah sang that song at VH1 Save The Music a couple weeks ago. Even better than the original. She's still got it (13 years later)

In the first couple of years of her career, Mariah's voice was looked at as freakish by critics. Many believed that what they were hearing on record was completely impossible. Mariah Carey was nothing more than a studio singer. In a post-Milli Vanilli world, they had every right to believe so. Columbia saw MTV's Unplugged program as the perfect way for Mariah to put an end to the doubt. She would be supported by nothing more than an acoustic band and a few backing singers. It was around this time that Mariah would meet long-time backing singer Kelly Price who would later go on to sing hooks for Bad Boy rappers and score herself a #1 R&B hit as a solo artist. She also met Trey Lorenz. During rehearsals, she heard somebody nearly matching her note for note and turned around to find out it was a man.
MTV asked Mariah to pick a song to cover for her setlist. Being Mariah's first cover, she saw it as the perfect opportunity to take a song that was already a classic and revive it for a brand new generation. Her cover of the Jackson 5's #1 hit was performed as the show's closer with Trey Lorenz. After the cameras stopped rolling however, she performed an unrehearsed version of her hit "Can't Let Go".
Mariah's cover of the Jackson 5 classic was met with warm response and so Columbia released it commercially as a single from her MTV Unplugged album. The song became Mariah's sixth Hot 100 #1 in the spring of 1992, also topping the airplay charts for two months straight-- a feat uncommon for live releases.
Mariah set out to take a classic and make it her own, and did she ever. Mariah's cover now obliterates the Jackson 5 original, many weeks getting over ten times the amount of spins.

I almost feel like her version is more famous than Jackson's five version....

"I'll Be There" was already such an amazing song, the fact that she took it and made it better is a testament to her talent. If you took the audience sounds out of this, you would think it was a studio recording. Flawless live performance from her and Trey.

This was one of the first songs I had ever heard from her and I immediately fell in love with her voice. I have been a fan ever since.
The original song is good, but Mariah and Trey took it to the next level and made it their own. Theirs is the definitive version of this song.

They did a good job covering this.
This was Mariah's first song to miss the Top 10 on the R&B chart, spending 3 weeks at #11.

Sony needs to certify this Gold. In April 2008 "IBT" had a physical Soundscan total of 478,309 (limited single upon release) and a downloads total of 67,094. That's a total of 545,403 copies and thus well past Gold.

I incidentally heard the original the other day. I MUCH prefer Mariah & Trey's cover. π€·ββοΈ
Love this song, I'd put IBT in her top 5 best covers. This is really good:
