I think I was more familiar with Mariah's cover before hearing the Jackson 5 original. This was one of her best ballads but overplay on the radio from B96 to the AC stations like Lite FM 93.9 in my market prevented me from really enjoying it (the Jackson 5 original was overplayed on oldies and Urban AC stations in my market). Still a memorable song however.

This is a great cover that Mariah made her own. I've heard some snippets of her singing this over the past couple of years and she still sounds great.

29 years ago today, Mariah Carey's remake of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" jumped to No. 1 in its 4th week on the Hot 100 Singles chart. It became her 6th No. 1 on the main chart and it held the top spot for 2 weeks. "I'll Be There" features Trey Lorenz and was released as a single due to high demand for it after her Unplugged show aired on MTV. It became Mariah's 5th No.1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. And it reached No.11 on the Hot R&B Singles chart. This song also became her first really massive hit in the U.K., reaching No.2. "I'll Be There" remains the only song from the Unplugged series to ever reach No.1. I love it! The cd single I have comes with the radio edit of "Can't Let Go," "Love Takes Time," and the "So Blessed."
