One of my favorite songs of 1991, and my favorite song by George Michael. It really takes me back to my freshman year of college. The beat sounds a lot like the one in "Justify My Love."

Not bad... its B-side "Mothers Pride" almost made the top 40 too (one of those songs whose airplay was helped by the Gulf War).

The last few lines or so was from the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

One of my favorite songs of 1991... It really takes me back to my freshman year of college. LOL, I was a Freshman in college then, too and it takes me back to those days (since radio stations don't play it anymore). The song peaked at #20 on R&R, but somehow managed to climb all the way to #8 on the Gavin Top 40 chart. Aaron mentioned the B-side "Mother's Pride". That song's pretty good, but so depressing. The line "...the time has come to lose a son" is a grim reminder of what happens to so many soldiers in wars, even though that's probably not what George meant by that line.

I was in college too. I only heard the song played once more after it fell off the countdown and that was in the summer of 1991. It seemed like a real treat and I remember scurrying to get my tape going.

this tune got to #27 in 1991 but it might have been higher if George didn't put Mother's Pride as the B-side

I wish he would've released it as the first single instead of "Praying For Time." I bet it would've gone to #1.

My all-time favorite George Michael song. I have to wonder if it would have hit #1 had it been the first release from "Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1."

Not sure if this song would have gone to #1 if it had been released first, but I'm glad they released "Praying For Time" first, since that's my favorite song from that album.
Several members here and I were talking about that song on a chat room last night. The song peaked at #20 on R&R (and I believe #27 on BB), but in Gavin Magazine, it did manage to climb to number eight. Obviously, more small markets played this song than large markets, because Gavin had many more small market stations than R&R.
The flipside of the song, "Mother's Pride" received some airplay as well, since the record was climbing the charts during Operation Desert Storm. In fact, I believe that, on the Billboard chart, it was listed as "Waiting For That Day/Mother's Pride". That said, I'm surprised that it didn't climb any higher than the mid-twenties on Billboard, since you'd think it would have sold more copies.
My opinion of the song - pretty good. It would be my second favorite song released from the album, behind "Praying For Time". My least favorite song would be "Freedom '90". Somewhat of a disappointment compared to the original "Freedom".

"Mother's Pride" peaked at #46 the same week that "Waiting For That Day" peaked at #27.

Wasn't a bad song, but I also preferred the first two singles "Praying For Time" and "Freedom 90".

It may have been listed that way on the sales chart (I know Billboard started publishing the Top 75 POS SoundScan chart just for comparison several months before they started using it in the Hot 100, not sure if WFTD/MP made it though).

Very nice song. Definitely one of his less appreciated hits. The entire Listen Without Prejudice album is awesome, I think.

I think this is the better song, and I wonder if it would have also hit #1 as a lead single instead of underperforming like it did. It definitely would have done much better than it did. It was the first single of George's to miss the Top 10 in the US, stalling at #27. It didn't do well in the UK either though, peaking at #23. Music video

I thought this was much, much better than "Freedom" which I didn't like at all.

There is such a beautiful elegiac quality about this song. It's his most genuinely haunting song for me. The exquisite lyrics, the caressing production, the softness of his vocals - for me, it is one of his crowning achievements. I cry every time I hear it.
Something in me needs this pain I know i'll never see your face again
