This song, one of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest, is one of the best escapist songs ever. Written by Goffin/King, the lyrics and melody fit perfectly. Lieber and Stoller's production on the Drifters version puts you right on an apartment house roof with a starry sky above you. Great song. What do you think?

I like James Taylor's version of this song the best. It sounds quite different than the original Drifters' version, though that one's pretty good, too.

The Drifters original got to #5 in 1962-63 while James' remake only got #28 in 1979 and it was James last top 40 solo pop hit

Laura Nyro's version is my fave. Laura's version is my favorite too. Beautiful. It was her only song as a recording artist to hit the Hot 100 (peaking at #92), although plenty of other artists had major hits with her songs.

Laura's version is wonderful. I especially liked King and Taylor's take on it on their "Live at the Troubador" CD/DVD from a few years ago.
