Sorry for the week off, I've been very busy. Here's the clues for 5-2.
5. The lyrics seem kind of pessimistic, but the song is great anyway. In fact, I think it's the best song this singer ever did, and also his best video, even though he didn't even really make it. ;)
4. This song is sort of a theme song for my life. Seems like my wants are pretty simple, but there's always a wrench thrown into the equipment.
3. The writer of this song called it the best song she's ever written. I agree, and it might just be the best performance ever for the man who sings it. You might say it's kind of the inspirational answer to the sadder lyrics of #5 and #4.
2. I had to laugh when I spoke with someone on line who said she had never heard this song. But then, she was just a baby in 1990. Anyone who was old enough to have ears to listen couldn't possibly not know this song. It was EVERYWHERE in 1990. I was kinda surprised it didn't end up the #1 song of the year on the pop charts as much as it was played. But of course, the formulas for the year-end charts were different back then, and I guess this one just climbed the chart a little too fast.

17. Roxette -- It Must Have Been Love (though I still don't make the connection with Christmas) "It Must Have Been Love (Christmas For The Broken Hearted)".

2. Sinead O'Connor -- Nothing Compares 2 U? Nope. That was #9. ;) Plus, Sinead WAS #1 for the year on American Top 40, the song in question was not #1 for the year on any of the pop countdown shows that I know of. I guess it could have been on one of those more obscure ones like Scott Shannon's countdown, but I didn't really keep up with those.

Was Trish (who was on the AT40 chat room a few weeks back) the one who said she hadn't heard your #2 song of 1990? I vaguely recall her saying that she had never heard "Vogue" by Madonna, so I'll guess that for #2.
Is #3 "When I'm Back On My Feet Again" by Michael Bolton?
Can't think of anything for #4. The clue seems to vague. Was this song ever #1 on the Pop chart?

And the person I was talking about was actually in the CMCentral chatroom like a year ago. I can answer that one by saying "yes and no" and it's a completely accurate answer. ;) Also, if you go back and carefully read the other pages of this guessing game, you will find a pretty good clue for who is at #4.

And now..*trumpet fanfare*..the #1 song of 1990 on the Hot Rod Top 20...
If I had used any sort of rational point system, this song would not have been #1 for 1990. But instead, I went purely by weeks at #1 as the first criteria. And since this song spent the last 7 weeks of 1990 at #1, it also finished the year at #1, despite having only 9 weeks total on the chart at that point. I actually don't really like this song much anymore, but at the time, as a freshman in high school, before I got so darn cynical like I am today, I actually got inspired by songs like this one.
And frankly, I think that's enough of a clue. Maybe even too easy, but there ya go. ;)

Now I get the "yes and no" answer for song #4. "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven" did get to #1 on the R&R pop chart, but I think, due to limited sales or something like that (I seem to remember reading that in the Hot 100 Singles Spotlight feature), it only peaked at #4 on the Hot 100. There were actually two different songs number one on Billboard for the two weeks that Phil Collins ruled the Pop chart (September 29 and October 6). First, there was Nelson's first song "Love And Affection", which peaked at #5 on R&R, then the week after that, it was Maxi Priest's "Close To You". That song hit #3 on R&R.
There was another song around that time period that hit #1 on Billboard, but not R&R; "Blaze Of Glory" by Jon Bon Jovi. On R&R, "Release Me" by Wilson Phillips hit #1 a week earlier than on Billboard.
