I think this peaked somewhere between #11 and #15. It was nice to see Olivia return to the charts. I think this was the last medley to hit the Top 40.

It was a nice mix of the highlights of Grease. I liked it.

Nice bit of nostalgia when it hit the charts. I saw a couple of teenagers try to do the megamix at karaoke a few months back... apparently they'd never heard the medley version of the songs, because they got so lost during the segue parts.

Grease is the worst musical I've ever forced myself to sit through. The reviews at the time were so ecstatic that I wanted to see it. God, what a letdown. Choreographed ersatz pop. Yuk!
There's only been one good movie musical since Fiddler On The Roof and that's Chicago.

I thought the Megamix was great. At least it was given a second life to a new generation of listeners although some have never heard of the movie nor the musical. I've heard that song so many times on the KISX (then Mix 107.3 now Kiss 107) that it actually wore out my listener welcome.
Obviously "Grease, II" was the ultimate bomb in 1981. It didn't really match up to the first one--period! I was disappointed about that movie and didn't realize why I wasted my $2.00 (the price of matinee admission at the time) to see that crap! But nothing can beat the original with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

The movie is awesome and the songs on their own are great

Evita wasn't too bad imo. You're right, I forgot about that one. We talked about it in another thread recently. I once saw a film of Cats that was pretty good too, but it wasn't really a movie musical. It was a just a filmed stage play. You'd probably like it. It was really popular for years in London.

A blatant attempt at milking the songs for all they're worth.
I prefer the original songs on their own.

Whoever thought you'd ever heard Didi Conn's voice in the Top 40 again? ;)
Too bad they didn't include "Hopelessly Devoted To You."

This song didn't get much attention on CT40. I don't remember Casey doing any stories on it.

My parents are huge fans of the movie, can't say the same about myself though.
When did this magamix chart? Don't think i've ever heard it, though I've heard the individual songs more than I'd like to say.

Hit the US pop charts late '96 into early '97, although it had been a hit in Europe several years earlier.

I remember they had ONJ on Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 when this was on the chart. Don't remember what she talked about though.
When did this come out in the U.K.? I remember hearing a drop of it on "Joel Denver's Future Hits" which was canceled in 1994. It was during their "BBC Top 5" segment.

Don't remember the countdown, for I was in Norfolk at the time, and pop radio in Norfolk doesn't exist. However, I think that ONJ may have been trying to promote the 20th anniversary re-release of "Grease".

I like this mix. I actually heard the megamix before I heard any of the real Grease songs. Now when I hear one of the real songs, I can't stand to listen past the point where the megamix cuts it off. It just doesn't sound right for some reason. I think the megamix correctly guessed my attention span for that music. I still hear this occasionally on Allentown's B104.
Interesting station edits on this song as well. Some were perfectly OK with the song as-is. Others reversed or bleeped the "chicks'll cream" and "p***y wagon" lines in the "Greased Lightning" part.

This was one of those songs that I heard only while it was on CT40. When it debuted, I was like, "What the hell is this?? What's a medley of Grease songs doing on the Top 40? Who's playing this?" Not only that, but I had other questions like, "How is this credited to an artist?" And "Where [as in album] did this come from?" and "Why did this even get made?"
Needless to say, since it was a medley of campy showtunes, I didn't/don't like it and I ignored it as much as possible. How it got all the way up to #12 (or so) without any help from my pop station is beyond me. Like I said, "Who played this? And why?"
BTW, I had never heard the individual songs before this existed and to this day, I have not seen Grease (yet).

I also heard this exclusively from AT40 and didn't care for it the least bit. I don't care to see the movie either. Could there be more of a "chick-flick".

Could there be more of a "chick-flick". That's a rather mean spirited thing to say to the many people who grew up enjoying the movie.

Well, if you enjoy the movie, that's cool. The impression that I've gotten of it, from the people I've talked to or overheard, is that John Travolta is hot and that they sing a bunch of songs that I don't really like. And from that, it sounds like a movie I wouldn't be remotely interested in, although my standards for a movie convincing me to want to see it are extremely high.

Could there be more of a "chick-flick". I can think of a few hundred. Just because it's a musical with John Travolta looking "hot" doesn't automatically make it a "chick flick". Olivia was pretty hot herself, y'know (a little something for the guys)!

BTW, I had never heard the individual songs before this existed and to this day, I have not seen Grease (yet). If you're really, really into pop music, you might like the film, but if not don't waste your time. Two solid hours of stale bubblegum. One of my straight friends (a guy who likes pop a lot more than I do) said that one of the picture's minor annoyances was that Olivia Newton John was wearing clothes. So on second thought I suppose that if you're straight and have a vivid imagination Grease might hold some measure of charm for you. The little miss is quite the acrobat. I never thought John Travolta was particularly good-looking. He's a great actor, but I'd much rather watch him in Saturday Night Fever where the pop music is at least marginally better and the story is much, much more compelling.

I've been thinking about this song a lot ever since I saw "Grease" (pop-up video style) on AMC not long ago. I got a kick out of that scene where the waitress is trying to turn off the light with her elbow and completely misses it, yet the light still goes out.

I absolutely LOVE "Grease". Kinda funny story... when I was in my early teens my mom really wanted me to watch the movie and I refused. So finally she said she was going to watch it and that I should give it a chance. So I did and LOVED IT! How it was a surprise I am gay shouldn't be so. lol! But the megamix is great. It is a nice sampling of the good songs from the movie.

When I first heard this song, I had a very similar experience as Nicholas2.0. It was one day in late 1996, I was getting ready to go to a wedding. I turned on the radio to U93 as I was getting dressed and heard the song "Summer Nights" and I was like, "What the hell?", since U93 never plays songs from the 1970s, let alone a forgotten oldie like that. It wasn't until about a week later that I saw "Grease Megamix" starting to grow on the charts and I remembered that the song, which was a hit in the UK back in early 1991 (to clarify johnnywest's question), contained "Summer Nights". That was when I realized that was what U93 was playing.
