Awesome track & awesome video. I guess peeps just weren't ready for this from Janet. I still applaud it. Love everything about GTIG.

Joni Mitchell never lies
This is one of my favorite songs by Janet, and I love the mixes done by J Dilla. Which pretty much (imho) proved that The Ummah's are the original producers and Jam & Lewis just re-created the track.

I love the AVH dance mix of this song. Loved it from the beginning and it hit #3 in R&B airplay.

This song was huge at Urban...it would have been even bigger had Virgin actually released the physical single. At the time it couldn't chart on the official Hot 100 or R&B 100 due to the chart rules (no strictly radio singles), but it did go number one in radio airplay at urban. This was the perfect way to start off the "Velvet Rope" era.

^ Some will disagree with you, but I wholeheartedly agree. I love everything about GTIG and glad it happened as it did!

(and always a crowd pleaser when performed in concert) Actually it peaked at R&B fairly quickly. Virgin messed up by not releasing it as a single. Urban was selling more singles than Pop radio songs anyway at the time. Plus it would've given pop a reason to take a second glance at GTIG as a single.

The beat on this is incredible. The afro-centric video remains my favourite of hers.

This was a disappointment. I remember Y100 skipped this song entirely and went straight to Together Again before it was announced as the 2nd single.

Great use of the Joni Mitchell sample. And I love the groove. it didn't set pop radio on fire, but it did pretty well at urban radio.
I liked that TVR era didn't kick off with surefire radio smash.

Never saw the big deal with this. One of the worst on TVR.

I remember watching the video back then and thought it was super weird and creepy, but the song rocks!

Still sounds like a million bucks. It could be released right now and nobody would bat an eye. The production is perfection, the sample works and Q-Tip kills it. Great video as well.
I love how this has managed to live on, regardless of the mixed reaction upon release. It's one of her most streamed songs, bigger than almost all of her massive hits.

Haven't listened to it in years... I remembered it kinda dragged, but it's a good song, I like it.
By the way, nice video.

I agree that this song has aged very well. I love it. It's such a cool song. Great video too.
I'm glad it was a big Urban hit and did well internationally.

This song gets more timeless as time goes by, if that makes sense? Like to me, it doesn’t sound like 1997 at all.
I especially love Janet’s vocals on the chorus: got til it’s gooooone, got til its goooo-ooone

This was the perfect way to start off the "Velvet Rope" era. It peaked at #35 at Top 40, so even with decent sales, it would have struggled to make the top 5. Still, it would have added to her chart stats. Can we talk about how unapologetically Black the video is? And how shocking (but amazing) it is the Grammys gave her Short-Form Video for it?

Never liked this song. Joni's vocal is grating to me.
The album is phenomenal though, it more than makes up for it with the other tracks, such as I Get Lonely, which I stan for with my life.

This song sounds so fresh still, not dated at all. A masterpiece tbh
