For the first January chart, we go back to the week that the Georgia Satellites commanded "Keep Your Hands To Yourself", but Gregory Abbott didn't care; he wanted to "Shake You Down". Ben E. King begged you to "Stand By Me" and the Human League said "I Need Your Loving" but Journey insisted "I'll Be Alright Without You". But Billy Ocean thought that was the wrong attitude, because "Love Is Forever". Yes indeed, it was 1987 and this was the very first chart in 1987, which explains the unusually slow chart (R&R only skipped one week during the 1986-87 holidays) Also, the weeks on chart column will be one week off, since I counted the holiday week.

Dropped: From #23: The Next Time I Fall/Peter Cetera & Amy Grant From #27: To Be A Lover/Billy Idol From #31: Hip To Be Square/Huey Lewis & The News From #32: You Give Love A Bad Name/Bon Jovi From #39: Goldmine/The Pointer Sisters
I remember listening to Rick Dees count this chart down, and I had to listen closely, especially when he gave last week's positions, since the chart for the week before was never counted down. John Leader's Countdown USA had been the Top 86 of 1986 over the past two weeks and Rick Dees had also taken two weeks off to count down the Top 86 songs of the year gone by. And, since I said that R&R had skipped only one week, that means that they had to sacrifice a chart, which was the one for December 19. To make matters worse, WZZP, the station on which I caught the Rick Dees show, had started an hour early, so I missed most of the first hour. I tuned in at around ten minutes before the hour, the time I usually tuned in and the song "You Got It All" was playing. I didn't really think much of it because that song wasn't on the chart yet (or so I thought), so I figured that WZZP was just running regular programming like they usually did before the countdown. You can imagine my surprise when Rick's voice came over the radio and outroed the song. Since that caught me off guard, I didn't hear how many notches the song had moved up. But after that, I kept a close ear out. When I listened to the same chart getting counted down on John Leader's Countdown USA the next day, I got to hear the songs that I missed, but that was it; since the show had been a special over the past few weeks, he didn't mention the chart movement. He did mention which songs were debuts, but I guess he didn't want to call attention to the fact that he had skipped a chart. So I had no way of knowing the last week positions of a few songs. Until I got the 1987 charts from R&R, I just wrote out a chart with guesstimations. The bottom five positions were like so:
40) Ballerina Girl (correct) 39) Talk To Me/Chico DeBarge 38) You Got It All/The Jets 37) Livin' On A Prayer/Bon Jovi (correct, since I had heard that song after I had tuned in to Rick Dees) 36) Stop To Love/Luther Vandross (correct).
I did, however, have the positions of songs that dropped out completely messed up. The only one that I had right was "You Give Love A Bad Name" by Bon Jovi. The rest were like so (lw positions from the December 12 chart):
12-23) Hip To Be Square/Huey Lewis & The News 14-27) The Next Time I Fall/Peter Cetera f/Amy Grant 15-30) To Be A Lover/Billy Idol 23-32) You Give Love A Bad Name/Bon Jovi 27-35) Human/The Human League
When I computed the points for the Top 100 of 1987, I noticed that the Jets had a few less points than they should have, so that's when I deduced that they must have been number 35 on the week of the missing chart, so the Human League got moved down to #38. That song seemed like the only logical choice for the song near the bottom of the chart, since the other dropping songs on the December 12 chart missing from the one above were all outside the Top 30 and falling quite fast, except for "Goldmine", which had been stalled out at number 33, but it had fallen out of the Billboard Top 40 that week, so I didn't think it was that one. Luckily, back in 1995, when I received the 1986 and 1987 charts, I was able to see the correct chart. Otherwise, I might have posted an inaccurate chart this week.

Now, we go back to the year that the Jefferson Starship were calling Jane while Stevie Nicks was asking the poet of her heart, Sara, to call her as soon as she built her house. Meanwhile Sara was hammering and sawing away, the Dirt Band, along with Linda Ronstadt, were in the process of building an American Dream about going to Coconut Grove. Rod Stewart was in no mood for such a thing and he shook his head and insisted, "I Don't Want To Talk About It". All the while, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were pleading "Don't Do Me Like That", but the Captain & Tennille begged, "Do That To Me One More Time". It was 1980, and here is the very first chart from 1980, more specifically, the January 11 chart: You'll notice that for this week, there's a Two Weeks Ago column. This is for the benefit of those who want the real chart for the week before. You see, R&R skipped two weeks during its first ten (or so) years. I always made up a chart for one of the skipped weeks to see what it might look like. This chart is reflected in the last week column. The two weeks ago column is the weeks on the last actual chart before this one. And, as always, both skipped weeks are counted in the "weeks on chart" column.
2C LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 05 02 01 07 The Long Run/The Eagles 03 01 02 08 Rock With You/Michael Jackson 13 10 03 06 Sara/Fleetwood Mac 07 04 04 10 Jane/Jefferson Starship 06 07 05 09 Do That To Me One More Time/The Captain & Tennille 07 06 06 08 Coward Of The County/Kenny Rogers 10 09 07 08 Don't Do Me Like That/Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 02 03 08 11 We Don't Talk Anymore/Cliff Richard 09 08 09 08 This Is It/Kenny Loggins 01 05 10 11 Escape (The Pina Colada Song)/Rupert Holmes 15 12 11 07 Cruisin'/Smokey Robinson 21 18 12 05 Yes I'm Ready/Teri DeSario w/KC 20 16 13 05 Deja Vu/Dionne Warwick 16 14 14 07 Third Time Lucky/Foghat 24 19 15 05 Romeo's Tune/Steve Forbert 12 13 16 09 Head Games/Foreigner 28 23 17 04 Crazy Little Thing Called Love/Queen 08 08 18 12 Cool Change/Little River Band XX 28 19 02 Longer/Dan Fogelberg 14 17 20 08 Ladies Night/Kool & The Gang 11 15 21 16 Babe/Styx XX 27 22 02 I Wanna Be Your Lover/Prince 26 24 23 04 Why Me/Styx 27 25 24 04 Voices/Cheap Trick XX 26 25 02 Don't Let Go/Isaac Hayes XX 30 26 02 Wait For Me/Hall & Oates XX XX 27 01 An American Dream/Dirt Band f/Linda Ronstadt 19 20 28 09 Better Love Next Time/Dr. Hook 29 29 29 04 Savannah Nights/Tom Johnston XX XX 30 01 Daydream Believer
Droppers (from my improvised January 4 chart): #21: No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)/Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer #22: Send One Your Love/Stevie Wonder
Droppers (from the last actual R&R chart): #17: No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)/Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer #18: Send One Your Love/Stevie Wonder #22: Take The Long Way Home/Supertramp #23: Please Don't Go/KC & The Sunshine Band #25: Damned If I Do/The Alan Parsons Project #30: You're Only Lonely/John David Souther
Top Ten New & Active: September Morn/Neil Diamond Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me Girl/The Spinners Fool In The Rain/Led Zeppelin You Know That I Love You/Santana Last Train To London/ELO 99/Toto When I Wanted You/Barry Manilow Lost Her In The Sun/John Stewart I Don't Want To Talk About It/Rod Stewart Lonely Eyes/Robert John
Of all the charts I'd created for R&R's skipped weeks, this was the first one that had a number one song that had never been to the top of R&R's actual charts. "Escape" by Rupert Holmes had fallen 1-10 over the holidays and the new number one song had moved 5-1, both unusual situations. I figured neither would have been at number one had there been a chart during the holiday weekend so, since Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" had been near the top on both the last chart of 1979 and the first chart of 1980, that he was the logical choice for number one that skipped week, even though he was not yet number one on Billboard. But, seeing as KC & The Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go" had fallen off the chart before it had hit number one on the Hot 100, I figured that didn't really matter. Well, I'll be back later on today with this week's CHR Flashback, from a year in the 1990s. Which year will I pick? You'll see.

"Head Games" peaked at number twelve for two weeks in December, 1979.
Is what you said you have a list of the CHR Flashbacks? If you could, please send that to me. Thanks.

26 24 06 This Is The Time/Chicago Not quite. In all seriousness, I enjoy these flashbacks since there were several time frames when I was unable to follow the R&R charts at all for whatever reason. Anything pre-1988 falls into that category.

Did it hit R & R at all in that year? I know it peaked at #46 in early 1980 on Billboard.

Yeah, I figured I'd made a mistake or two (seems like a CHR Flashback chart without a mistake is like an episode of "Diff'rent Strokes" without Arnold saying, "What'chu talkin' bout?")
I forgot that I post the Top Ten New & Active for charts that only go down to 30. I was looking at the chart for songs to refer to in my lead-in and the Rod Stewart song, even though not on the chart, seemed like it fit.
I don't know WHAT I was thinking when I gave Chicago as the artist of "This Is The Time" (although Bill Champlin, who would sing lead on some of Chicago's biggest hits, would probably do a good job with this song). Maybe, since I had just typed in the song that Chicago actually did sing, that song was going through my mind. It was a very memorable song, since it was the first since the early 1970's that Peter Cetera didn't sing lead on. But Jason Scheff, the lead singer of "Will You Still Love Me" sounded sort of like Peter. That's too bad Peter didn't stay with the group, but apparently, the band members wanted him out. I think that the second album that he was recording at the time had a lot to do with that. But that's OK, since his solo stuff was just as good.

What was the number 25 song on the LC column of the January 11, 1980 chart? It appears there should've been another dropper, on the list. Also could you do a January or February 1982 chart please Ulij? I was looking back, and you've never posted any from that time frame. Thanks much.

I'm sorry, I meant the 2C column. There are 6 songs that were debuting, but you have 5 songs listed as droppers. Was just curious. I'm actually looking for the number 25 song in that column.

Where did Jefferson's Starship's "Jane" peak? When was it released and how did it do on the 1979 and 1980 year end countdown?
Thanks! For reasons unbeknownst to me, I love that song.

"Jane" peaked at # 4 (for 2 weeks) on R&R with 11 weeks on. It did not make the Top 40 of the year in either year, due to it peaking in December of 1979. I don't have the year-end charts past # 40, so it may have made it below that. It only reached # 14 on Billboard though.

I'm already way behind on CHR Flashbacks, but since I have the afternoon off from work, I decided this would be a great time to catch up.
Anyway, for the week of January 15, we go back to the year that the chart was pretty much all about you. TLC was "Diggin' On You", Fun Factory declared "I Wanna B With U", Hootie & The Blowfish agreed, saying "Only Wanna Be With You", Selena was simply "Dreaming Of You" and the Gin Blossoms wouldn't believe it "'Til I Hear It From You". It was 1996, and this is the CHR/Top 50 chart from the weekend of January 19:
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 01 01 12 One Sweet Day/Mariah Carey w/Boyz II Men (7th week #1) 02 02 18 Name/The Goo Goo Dolls 03 03 10 Missing/Everything But The Girl 07 04 13 Time/Hootie & The Blowfish 10 05 13 One Of Us/Joan Osbourne 04 06 26 Breakfast At Tiffany's/Deep Blue Something 08 07 12 Exhale (Shoop Shoop)/Whitney Houston 06 08 15 Diggin' On You/TLC 05 09 12 You'll See/Madonna 09 10 15 Hand In My Pocket/Alanis Morissette 12 11 09 Get Together/Big Mountain 18 12 08 Don't Cry/Seal 16 13 07 Wonder/Natalie Merchant 11 14 21 Fantasy/Mariah Carey 14 15 17 Good Intentions/Toad The Wet Sprocket 20 16 08 Be My Lover/La Bouche 13 17 22 Runaway/Janet Jackson 22 18 14 Hook/Blues Traveler 21 19 09 The World I Know/Collective Soul 17 20 25 'Til I Hear It From You/Gin Blossoms 15 21 30 As I Lay Me Down/Sophie B. Now, we take the trip back to the year that The Who was playing their Squeeze Box, while Earth Wind& Fire proceeded to Sing A Song because the O'Jays said "I Love Music" and, while listening to this music when not talking on the CB radio, C.W. McCall was part of a Convoy. It was 1976, and this is the chart for January 23, 1976. Due to the fact that I wrote these charts a little differently than as listed by R&R, there is no "weeks on chart" column. Sorry for any inconvenience:

For my final January CHR Flashback, we go back to the year that Stevie Wonder was talking about That Girl and Billy Joel agreed that She's Got A Way. J Geils Band found their angel in the Centerfold and Kenny Rogers was glad he stayed right here with you Through The Years. It was 1982, and here is the chart for my tenth birthday, January 29, 1982:

Ironically, neither song hit the Top Ten. The George Michael song hit a brick wall at #18 and Melissa peaked at 14.

You're welcome.
Those of you who own Volume 2 of Barry Scott Presents The Lost 45s of the 70s and 80s (like myself, and Aaron) might notice that there are two songs back to back in the "New & Active" section from that album. ("Sea Of Love" and "I Believe"). Plus, two songs listed in the 1976 Flashback ("Paloma Blanca" and "Let's Live Together") are also on the CD.

XX 29 Feel Like A Bullet/Grow Some Funk Never even heard of this song. Did this ever make Billboard's Top 40? I'm surprised I've never heard it on "American Top 40 - the 70s."
