I believe it was "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. But since I'm so old, it wasn't necessarily "pop radio," but radio and singles combined. I pre-date R&R, so I have to use Billboard info. :(

The number one record when I was born was "I've heard that song before" by Harry James, with Helen Forrest, on April 19, 1943. I don't know if there was anything called "pop radio" back then, but this was the official number one record in the U.S.A. on that date according to the Billboard Chart.

Mine is "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman Turner Overdrive. The link on the front page doesn't work. Try this one instead. Just enter the date underneath the vinyl record.

That website is giving the number ones on the "Hot 100", which is not the same as the Radio station airplay chart. Otherwise, it's a pretty good website. Before the 1990's, the Hot 100 and radio station airplay chart were pretty much the same, but after that they became quite different from each other.

MONDAY MONDAY The Mamas and The Papas
Ironically, that was on the Shadoe Stevens AT40 I just was listening to today! He was doing a thing about titles with two repeating words, as Amy Grant's "Baby Baby" was on its way down the chart.
