Does anybody remember Cleopatra's sophomore album "Steppin' Out"? This new release was suppose to launch them into the full on RnB arena, ditching their colorful clothing for black, sultry attire.
To kick off the album, Maverick released "Come and Get Me" in the UK and "U Got It" in the US. Consequently, Cleopatra flopped on both sides of the Atlantic almost simutaneously.
After "Come and Get Me" flopped in the UK, I recall a member of Cleopatra attacked her homeland by saying UK consumers don't support their own RnB acts.
Then they released a commercial single for "U Got It" and their sophomore album "Steppin' Out" in the US; both landed with a thud. However, the girls had a shortlived campaign for CoverGirl!
The UK release date for "Steppin' Out" was pushed back and eventually, the album was shelved. No worries, fan could import the album from the US for cheap since many people were selling it USED for pocket change.
I remember I use to hate "U Got It" but now I don't think it's so bad. US fans were angry it was the single since they said it was the worse song off the album. I think it's quite catchy.
"Come and Get Me" did not deserve to tank. In my opinion, it should've been the lead single for the US too. It's a great song and I love the line, "Ever since Cleopatra's Theme, you wanted a touch of love," a reference to their debut single and album.
Both of these songs are solid, great tracks. Based on them, I think "Steppin' Out" deserves a purchase. It's less than $1 used now, so why not show Cleopatra a touch of YOUR love! Better late than never!
I think Cleo was pregnant or something. I dunno when.
