I could co-list this as Ike and Tina Turner, but face it, this is a Tina Turner song. Her vocal performance makes it. Musically, Phil Spector took this song way over the top, almost on the verge of overkill. But Tina's vocals reign it in. This was a resounding flop, peaking at 88 on the pop charts, but from what I understand, it went on to big success in Europe. Regardless of its flop stateside, this song is still revered as a classic.

A Classic!! From what my father told me when I was a kid, Phil Spector voluntarily retired when this song flopped, I don't know for how long because he produced a John Lennon album in mid 70s. I think there was a supergroup duet in late 60s that had a decent sized hit with this, like the supremes and 4 tops or something.

I never heard it, until the movie (What's Love Got To Do With It) came out. It is a fantastic song. It is so powerful.

It's an amazing song, and no one can do it like Tina. Spector's production here is stunning, it was his "wall of sound" technique. I'm not sure why it flopped, but I don't really understand the period too well (it was released in 1966). Specter considers the song one of his greatest achievements and blames "vengeful U.S. music industry" for it's failture, although as was said it was a big success in Britain. I think for today's audience it sounds classic.

Very powerful song. The above mentioned of the other artists ala Motown, re-did the the song and made success with it moderately. Since I was born in 1966, I had no idea what kind of music it was during my birth. You might say I was part of a changing society at the time. It would take me about another 15 or 20 years to recognize this song and finally appreciate it and I'm glad that I did.
