To compliment the "Who Am I" topic, where you guess a certain artist based on clues given, this is a game in which you try to identify a song in that method. I was going to call it "What Am I?", but I didn't think that sounded exactly right. Anyway, the first song is like so:
This song, a top 20 hit from the 80s, is credited to two superstars, but a third superstar made a brief appearance on the song. Though it's a love song, it's mid-tempo instead of being a slow ballad. IMO, if it were, it would sound really bland.

Another clue: the uncredited third artist provided an instrumental solo in the middle of the song, using the melody of the lead-in to the chorus.

Very good guess, but not the song I'm looking for. The song was from two years later.

Is it "You're A Friend of Mine" - Jackson Browne & Clarence Celmens (with appearence by Darryl Hannah) Sorry, it's not that one either. Both of the songs guessed are from 1985. The song in question is from 1987.

I'm gonna guess "Love Power" by Dionne Warwick and Jeffrey Osborne?

YES!! It is indeed "Love Power." Dionne Warwick and Jeffrey Osbourne sang the vocals on this (awesome!) song and Kenny G did the sax solo in the middle to the tune of "you know I've never gotten over you, so I'm hoping you still love me like you did before you walked away/Look what love can do". This song was one of my personal faves of 1987 and I find it too bad it wasn't able to squeeze past number fifteen (on R&R), but at least it got that high (some great songs barely scrape into the Top 40) and did well on the A/C chart. The next song in question: The song was a one-week wonder on Billboard in the 1980s, from a man who's been making music since the 1970s (possibly even 1960s) and has done several Children's albums. He's good friends with a man from one of the greatest bands from the 1970s and I believe he's even provided back-up vocals for their songs (but don't hold me to that).

Don't know if this is correct or not, but the song "Forever" by Kenny Loggins came to my mind. This was a great song, but should have been the first single from Vox Humana instead of the title cut which flopped. I know Kenny did some children's material. I remember an AC hit in 1994 "Return To Pooh Corner."

And you are exactly right.
The next song: from a year that AT40 Flashback seemed to hate, although it did get one play on the show and I heard it for the first time, knowing it by title and artist, though I had heard it several times before. The songwriter fears they're being stalked.

Close, but no cigar.
BTW, 1984 was not exactly a year AT40 Flashback hated, for it's in a tie with 1987 for second place as far as times aired, at 14. You must not have been scanning the R&R or AT40 message boards last spring, for there were several near flame wars about this, especially over on the AT40 message boards.

Yeah, I honestly don't keep up with the AT40 flashback years or anything, so I was guessing the only song I could immediately think of about that. The only other song I can think of is the other point of view, so I won't be able to get this. I may smack my head later, but it just isn't coming to me.

Nope. One of the words in the last song you guessed is in the title of the song that I'm thinking of.
Another clue: the song has a very haunting melody, sort of like how the person being stalked would feel.

Absolutely correct! When I first heard the song, the subject matter combined with the melody sent chills up my spine. Lyrics like "He must have tapped my telephone line" and such - yikes!
It remains one of my favorite songs from 1981.
For my next song, it's yet another rather obscure one. This man had two big hits in the mid-seventies, but five years later, had his last CHR appearance. This one came so, so close to the Top Ten (on R&R) but didn't quite make it. It did appear on the year end chart of the year it hit (if I said the year, that would give it away).

When I was living in Phoenix this song recieved tons of airplay on the FM.

Next question (you don't mind?)
This one should be simple.
She was popular in her homeland. The song in question is about a nuclear war nothing to do with the "fun stuff" released in the 80s.

How about this one? People unfairly said I was too much like John Cougar Mellencamp which pretty much killed my career, but this song made top 30 on the Billboard chart and is my biggest hit on R&R pop at #16.
The title is the same as a popular song of last year.

Hint on my question: The song I'm talking about was a song that was never heard on AT40 Flashback (but if they'd used a chart from an adjacent week, we would have heard it). The man has the same first name as an artist who also charted that same year but, like ? ?, missed being played on AT40FB.

I've been taking a trip down memory lane here on the message boards and I was really surprised that this hasn't been guessed. Come on don't you wanna take a guess at this. I know you do.

.....just a stab in the dimness--is it "Really Wanna Know You" by Gary Wright?
& speaking of "Somebody's Knockin", I never really thought of it as a song about stalking. but I love it....

Here's an interesting question, but before I ask I must tell you I do not like the original version, nor the artist really. We decided to remake this song a few years ago. Our sophomore album flopped both over here and in our native country England. It's a song about us being haunted every day from a relationship that has ended. We never meant to get this deeply involved with this person. Name that tune!
