What are some songs that have been banned from radio, at least in some areas?
I remember from R&R's Every Pop #1 topic that Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" was banned in large parts of the country due to its content, and that precluded it from #1.
I read that Tim McGraw's "Indian Outlaw" outraged some Native American groups. Thus, they had the song banned in several states.
What are some others?
(Note: I'd appreciate it if video bannings were left out of this topic. :))

George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" was banned on quite a few stations in 1987 (it would've hit #1 otherwise).
I recall reading somewhere that there was one station in California that banned "Kung Fu Fighting" when it was popular (there was a college there with a high percentage of Asian students, I think). That station edited it out of AT40 every week, even the week it hit #1.

There was a place in North Carolina that banned the Macarena saying the lyrics were "too provocative."

Radio Disney considered Angela Via's "I Don't Care" to be too racy for its listeners. :o In the song, Angela sensually moaned, "I feel the passion and the fire ignite me." You could almost feel it too. The sexiness that exuded from Angela's voice could make anyone WET.So what did Angela do? She re-wrote and re-recorded the song, Destiny's Child "Jumpin' Jumpin'"-style! ("'Cuz it's 11:30 and the club is jumpin' jumpin'" -> "'Cuz it's Friday night, and the party's jumpin' jumpin'") "I feel the magic when you say that you love me" replaced the XXX-rated line, but it was still rejected. Angela Via is too sexy of a chica on the dancefloor to be played by Radio Disney! Caliente! Other lyrics in the song were changed too, but that's the only change I remember from when Angela played it for me during a break from her private show in the limo on the way back from our dinner date by the Bay. :)

One conservative station in Colorado wouldn't play "Me So Horny" or "Hanky Panky."

One station didn't play Toxic... right? Actually I wouldn't consider this type of cases a ban.

What station?
Q93.1 KQIX in Grand Junction, Colorado. I grew up there and the only Top 40 station was AC-leaning.

When "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix A Lot was a hit, KQMQ banned it from their countdown shows: Rick Dees and Countdown USA.

Yeah, the 80s weren't all that good to songs about wrist slashing and car crashes. Depeche Mode's 'Blasphemous Rumors' was banned all over the place.

Other songs Disney has altered: 2ge+her - The Hardest Part of Breaking Up (Is Getting Back Your Stuff) Barenaked Ladies - One Week (Refers to them as BNL) Britney Spears - Oops! I Did it Again B*Witched - C'est La Vie Christina Aguilera - Come On Over Christina Aguilera - What A Girl Wants Dream - He Loves U Not Jessica Simpson - Irresistible Lou Bega - Mambo #5

I stand corrected. It was Dave Sholan's Insider Top 30 Countdown which KQMQ aired Saturday mornings. KQMQ was never an AT40 affiliate. Actually, it couldn't have been Dave Sholin's Insider either, since that show was cancelled back in early fall, 1992. It could have been "Fast Track with Dave Sholin", though, since that show was from 1992 (It was added by U93 in fall, 1992, anyway). But for some reason, I don't think so, since that show was more or less a spinoff of "Joel Denver's Future Hits". The only difference was that at the end of the show, Mr. Sholin played the #1 song of the week, according to Gavin, the magazine for which he was the Top 40 editor at the time. "Baby Got Back" would have been played on that two or three times at the most.

No, I'm just assuming that "Fast Track" started earlier than the fall of 1992, especially since it was cancelled in early 1993. But maybe not. What I do know is that "Dave Sholin's Insider" ceased production after September, 1991. Unless there was a new version of the show that ran in the spring/summer 1992. But I don't think so, especially since I subscribed to "Gavin" magazine in the early 1990s and they usually advertised Dave Sholin's radio shows within. I don't remember seeing anything about a newer version of the Insider.

Wasn't "Royals" banned from Chicago recently because of the World Series?

After 9/11, Clear Channel sent out a memo to all of its station directors of songs that they were not supposed to play. It wasn't a flat out ban on the songs, but a lot of stations pulled the songs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Clear_Channel_memorandumAnd of course there was Die Young by Ke$ha that was yanked from a lot of stations after Sandy Hook.

Several stations banned Chris Brown after the Rihanna beating incident (but quickly forgot about it sadly).
