Stop pinching yourself! It is indeed true, I've finally decided to get this feature going once again. Even though it's nearly the end of June, here is the April series. To kick off, it's the year that Shawn Colvin informed us that Sunny Came Home, as did Jon Secada, Too Late Too Soon to find his woman in the arms of another man. But she decided it was Hard To Say I'm Sorry, like Az Yet, so she drove off with the Wallflowers and One Headlight. It was 1997, and here is the CHR/Pop chart from April 4, 1997:
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 02 01 22 You Were Meant For Me/Jewel 01 02 20 Lovefool/The Cardigans 03 03 24 Don't Speak/No Doubt 05 04 12 Every Day Is A Winding Road/Sheryl Crow 04 05 15 Wannabe/The Spice Girls 06 06 09 I Want You/Savage Garden 07 07 10 All By Myself/Celine Dion 09 08 10 One Headlight/The Wallflowers 12 09 08 Where Have All The Cowboys Gone/Paula Cole 08 10 18 Barely Breathing/Duncan Sheik 10 11 27 Don't Let Go (Love)/En Vogue 14 12 16 Everytime I Close My Eyes/Babyface 11 13 19 A Long December/Counting Crows 13 14 25 Un-Break My Heart/Toni Braxton 18 15 09 For You I Will/Monica 15 16 19 Ooh Aah...Just A Little Bit/Gina G 20 17 08 Secret Garden/Bruce Springsteen 16 18 18 Nobody/Keith Sweat 19 19 05 One More Time/Real McCoy 17 20 22 I Believe I Can Fly/R. For the next leg of the April Flashback series, we go back to the year that Paula Abdul reversed the roles and asked "Will You Marry Me?" Bryan Adams couldn't believe this proposal - he Thought he'd Died And Gone To Heaven, and the members of the Cure were a little High themselves. But Kris Kross thought the proposal was for them and started to Jump for joy. But when they found out they weren't the One, they, like the Williams Brothers proclaimed they Can't Cry Hard Enough, and Eric Clapton was crying Tears In Heaven. Well I guess you Live and Learn, right Joe Public?
Anyhoo, this is the chart for April 10, 1992:

Now, we take the trip back to the year that Billy Ocean yelled out, "Hey! You! Get Into My Car! Yes, you!" while Natalie Cole was cruisin' the freeway of love in her Pink Cadillac, originally driven by Bruce Springsteen, but he was walking now and taking One Step Up (literally!) and Tiffany Saw Him Standing There and went to Terence Trent D'arby's Wishing Well hoping she could be his Girlfriend, but unfortunately Pebbles had already spoken for him. So she, along with Johnny Hates Jazz was left with Shattered Dreams, but Out Of The Blue came Debbie Gibson saying to give it One More Try - after all, George Michael had! Yes indeed, it was 1988 and here is the CHR chart for the week of April 15, 1988 (get your taxes done yet?)
LC TC wc SONG/ARTIST 01 01 10 Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car/Billy Ocean 02 02 08 Where Do Broken Hearts Go/Whitney Houston 03 03 09 Devil Inside/INXS 05 04 10 Wishing Well/Terence Trent D'arby 08 05 09 Angel/Aerosmith 10 06 05 Anything For You/Miami Sound Machine 06 07 09 Girlfriend/Pebbles 12 08 07 Prove Your Love/Taylor Dayne 13 09 06 Pink Cadillac/Natalie Cole 04 10 11 Man In The Mirror/Michael Jackson 18 11 04 Shattered Dreams/Johnny Hates Jazz 11 12 08 I Saw Him Standing There/Tiffany 15 13 07 Electric Blue/Icehouse 19 14 04 I Don't Want To Live Without You/Foreigner 16 15 07 One Step Up/Bruce Springsteen 22 16 04 Always On My Mind/Pet Shop Boys 09 17 09 Some Kind Of Lover/Jody Watley 20 18 06 Pamela/Toto 24 19 04 Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)/Samantha Fox 07 20 11 Rocket 2 U/The Jets 27 21 04 Wait/White Lion 29 22 03 Two Occasions/The Deele 26 23 05 Piano In The Dark/Brenda Russell 25 24 06 I Wish I Had A Girl/Henry Lee Summer 39 25 02 One More Try/George Michael 31 26 03 Dreaming/Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark 32 27 03 Say It Again/Jermaine Stewart 32 27 03 Say It Again/Jermaine Stewart 14 28 12 Out Of The Blue/Debbie Gibson 23 29 13 Endless Summer Nights/Richard Marx 17 30 11 I Want Her/Keith Sweat 37 31 02 Strange But True/Times Two 36 32 02 One Good Reason/Paul Carrack 21 33 08 You Don't Know/Scarlett & Black XX 34 01 Everything Your Heart Desires/Hall & Oates 33 35 04 Fishnet/Morris Day 38 36 02 Kiss And Tell/Bryan Ferry 28 37 09 Check It Out/John Cougar Mellencamp XX 38 01 My Girl/Suave XX 39 01 Together Forever/Rick Astley XX 40 01 Yes/Merry Clayton

Well, sort of a surprise that I only made one mistake, seeing that I crammed three Flashbacks into one sitting (The dual listing of the Jermaine Stewart hit was intentional, which explains why I didn't amend it).
Anyway, I'll try to get the next Flashback on real soon.

Uncle Buck, Fonzie, Ulij20, whoever you are, you picked a good song to repeat twice. "Say It Again" was one of my favorites at the time. When it leaped from 40 to 32 it was tied with the fastest moving song for that particular week. A few weeks more however, and the song completely fizzled. 40-32-27-23-23-off.

What I distinctly remember about that was Rick Dees airing a "special" when the song was #23 for the second week. So, it went 40-32-27-23, then next time he did a normal countdown it was gone. Let's see that happen today!

Poor Uncle Buck. He gets more criticism on this board than Ryan Seacrest and Casey Kasem put together. ;)

Let's see that happen today! Let's see what happen today, a song with such a short chart run or Rick actually doing a meaningful special? ;) (The special was "#2 Hits of the 1980s", which I'm still looking for a copy of either the chart or the show itself)

Uh, guys, I'm so sorry; this has been a busy summer; I totally forgot about it. I'm going to have to throw together a schedule for the second half of this year, so please don't be disappointed to see repeat lists (AT40 Flashback, anyone?), but I'll work carefully on the lists for 2005. In the meantime, if anyone can post the dates for charts already used for my CHR Flashback series (or send them to me in a PM), that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
