Louis Armstrong was dead when he got his first CHR/Pop hit. He would have been 86. Louis Armstrong had a big hit with "Hello Dolly" in 1964 when he was 62 years old and still living. That record reached number 1 on the Hot 100. And according to my Joel Whitburn book "Pop Memories", Louis Armstrong had over 72 hits before that, starting in July,1926, when he was 24 years old (he was born on August 4, 1901, according to Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles 1955 to 1996". The "Pop Memories" book says July 4, 1900).

Hurricaine Smith had a number 3 hit with "Oh Babe What Would You Say" in 1972-1973 when he was 49 years old. That was his only record to hit the top 40.

I actually think that it's easier now for an artist to break in their 30s than it was 10 years ago.

Walter Brennan was 65 years old when he first hit the top 40 with "Dutchman's Gold" in the spring of 1960. After that he went on to have 2 more top 40 hits with "Old Rivers" (1962), and "Mama Sang A Song" (1962).

"Money Talks" is their one and only CHR/Pop hit. Yeah ur right just looked it up...thinkin that maybe You Shook Me All Night Long cracked the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 (cause of sales I guess) - AOR must've been huge back then for CHR not to touch it IMO That, and R&R only went down to 30 from 1977 (I think, it was a year in the late 70s) to June 1983.

Oh yeah that explains it Need to check Billboard Hot 100 archive book but almost positive YSMANL peaked in the high 20s (on the Hot 100)

Jamie Foxx's should be on the list... he was 38 when he scored his first hit Unpredictable.. number 8 on the BB Hot 100. But we all know his TRUE hit that broke him into the pop circuit was Blame It... he is 41.

"Older" is a relative word. It's not like the thread says "First Pop Hit at a Geriatric Age" LOL. I am almost 30 and don't take offense to that. Interesting thread though but I am surprised to see it here. I thought this thread was only for songs. It's just that it becomes harder for artists to break the pop market as they get older. Nowadays if you don't start in your teens, you're not gonna make it. This is so sad at true... artists need to start full-throttle pursuing a career by mid-teens in order to get signed by late teens and have a career by early twenties. Insanity!

Added a new one. David Guetta is 41. Also Michael Franti of Michael Franti & Spearhead is 43. But we all know his TRUE hit that broke him into the pop circuit was Blame It... he is 41. Um... no, that's not how it works. "Unpredictable" was a pop hit any way you slice it, and therefore his first pop hit (as the topic states).

The topic should be clear, first pop hit (as popular among pop radio)?, or first hit on the Top 40 pop charts?
