Group A Respect, Kelly Clarkson Moody's Mood for Love, Elliott Yamin Hemorrhage (In my Hands), Chris Daughtry Hallelujah, Jason Castro Let it Be, Brooke White Ain't No Sunshine, Kris Allen
As stated in the previous post, 3 of these performances automatically move to Round 5, 2 will compete in a wildcard round and 1 is eliminated. 2 of Group A's performances actually were given on the same night: Elliott's "Moody's Mood for Love" and Chris's "Hemorrhage (In my Hands)" - one of those perfromances moves on to Round 5 while one is eliminated cold. The judges told Elliott he couldn't win with songs like MMFL, while Daughtry was proclaimed a frontrunner after H(IMH). Pulse is actively disagreeing: Hemorrhage is cut while Moody's Mood moves on. 2 winners compete in Group A: the original Idol, Kelly Clarkson and the most recent winner, Kris Allen. This time, one performance advances to R5 while one will be thrown into wildcard purgatory. Kelly's semifinal rendition of "Respect" didn't make the cut, going into Round 4 pt 2 while Allen's "Ain't No Sunshine" is in the clear in Round 5. That means between Brooke White's "Let it Be" and Jason Castro's "Hallelujah", performed just 1 week apart, contend for the final automatic spot in Round 5 (the other joins Respect in the wildcard round). Both were widely praised by the judges and in an ever-so-close vote by Pulse, Castro's Hallelujah emerges victorious.

Group B Stuff Like That There, Kelly Clarkson I Walk the Line, Chris Daughtry Someone to Watch Over Me, Katherine McPhee I (Who Have Nothing), Jordin Sparks Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Allison Iraheta Mad World, Adam Lambert
Chris & Kelly compete once again. In Group A, Kelly moved into an additional qualifier round, whereas Chris was cut come the competition completely. This time around, Kelly is successful with "Stuff Like That There"....as is Chris with "I Walk the Line"! That means we have 1 eliminated performance, 2 wildcard performances and 1 R5 performance. Katherine McPhee proved she was a bit of an 'old soul' performing her best on 50s night, with Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland hits, Aretha anthems and "Someone to Watch Over Me" from American Standards night. Pulse has loved it so far but is unsure if Kat fits in the top 16 - STWOM is in the wildcard round. The performance that is eliminated from Group B was praised with reserved, by a teenage girl, on an unsuspecting theme night, where she stole attention from then frontrunners. Sorry Allison but "Papa was a Rolling Stone" is a goner. That means between Jordin Sparks's "I (Who Have Nothing)" and Adam Lambert's "Mad World", 1 performance moves to R5 and one is in purgatory. While both performances were 'moments' for these frontrunner contestents and both showcased an emotional connection previously unshown, only one automatically moves into the top 16. That performance is...I (Who Have Nothing).

Group C Without You, Kelly Clarkson Summertime, Fantasia Barrino Making Love (Out of Nothing at All), Carrie Underwood You Give Love a Bad Name, Blake Lewis Come Together, Carly Smithson Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Jason Castro
This group features 3 winners, a runner-up, a 4th place finisher and a 6th place contestent. While fellow runner-ups Adam & Kat moved into purgatory last group, Blake's "You Give Love a Bad Name" is simply eliminated. And while only 2 runner-ups remain (in purgatory, nonetheless), winners Kris, Kelly & Jordin have already moved on to round 5. Group C continues the winning streak for Idol winners, pushing "Without You", "Summertime" and "Making Love (Out of Nothing at All)" into Round 5. That mean's Carly's breakout performance of "Come Together" is in the wildcard round...I guess that comparison to KC doesn't fully follow through. Also in the wildcard round is Jason Castro's Idol Gives Back performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

Group D A Natural Woman, Kelly Clarkson I Surrender, Kelly Clarkson All By Myself, Latoya London Alone, Carrie Underwood A Song for You, Elliott Yamin Heartless, Kris Allen
Carrie Underwood was successful through Group C with MLOONAA but on Season 4, it was her performance of Heart's "Alone" where Simon prophetically announced that Underwood would become Idol's best seller...that 80s-rocking-magic-working performance works its magic again, as Alone rockets into Round 5. Simon also easily got behind Latoya London after her performance of "All By Myself" - after that semifinal performance, Latoya was a frontrunner until her untimely elimination...once again, she recieves a sad cut, All By Myself is eliminated. With 2 purgatory spots and 2 R5 spots open, Kelly's performances will move together, and Kris/Elliott's performances will move together. All 3 contestents have already advanced to Round 5 - Elliott & Kris with 1 and Kelly with 2...make that 4 - both KC performances move on while Heartless & A Song for You compete in wildcard.

I APOLOGIZE GREATLY FOR THE DELAY! I was at No Doubt last night and moving out of my dorm so it was a busy day but the results of the round4wildcard are in!
Wildcard Round Respect, Kelly Clarkson Someone to Watch Over Me, Katherine McPhee A Song for You, Elliott Yamin Come Together, Carly Smithson Let it Be, Brooke White Somewhere over the Rainbow, Jason Castro Mad World, Adam Lambert Heartless, Kris Allen
4 of these 8 performances will continue to the top 16 (Round 5). I will introduce the performances in groups of 2...in each group, one performance is eliminated and 1 moves on.

The first group of 2 is two of the most laid-back Idol finalists: Season 7's 4th place finisher Jason Castro ("Somewhere Over the Rainbow") and Season 8's winner Kris Allen ("Heartless"). An inspirational scale-back on one of the greatest movie classics against an accoustic version of one of the year's biggest hip-hop songs. Both Jason & Kris have moved on to Round 5 already with performances they gave earlier in the season (both Hallelujah & Ain't No Sunshine were reprised during finale week). Both performances gave both contestents much-needed momentum boosts but this time around, Pulse is feeling Heartless, kicking Kris's top 3 performances out of the competition.

Now, we focus on two performances from Season 5, only one week apart: Elliott Yamin's "A Song for You" and Katherine McPhee's "Someone to Watch Over Me". Both of these songs have been performaned several times by other contestents on the show and both of these performances were widely praised by judges and granted Elliott & Kat safety. Though Kris Allen & Ricky Braddy have performed ASFY, it's Elliott's that Pulse loves most, moving it into round 5.

Carly Smithson's "Come Together" vs. Adam Lambert "Mad World". Both performances are the last remains for Both Carly & Adam in Pulse's competition. The comparison is interesting: definitely 'the moment' for each contestent, Carly is singing one of the biggest rock songs of all time by the biggest artist of all time with all the big notes and glory and Adam is singing a scaled-back, haunting song that was inspired by Donnie Darko. In this battle, Pulse chooses the eerie emotion that Glambert evoked with Mad World.

The final showdown is between Brooke White's "Let it Be" and Kelly Clarkson's "Respect". These two emotional women have both cried on the big Idol stage...Brooke actually shed tears following her heart-wrenching rendition of one of the most well-known Beatles tune. Kelly felt rather empowered after belting Aretha's classic anthem and moving on to Season 1's top 10. This time, Kelly is left without respect as Brooke's LIB moves on.

Very quickly in the competition, we lost all performances from Season 2. Tonight, though Season 4 doesn't become obselete, it joins Seasons 3 & 6 as we narrow all S4 performances to 1. Going into round 5, we were left with 2 Carrie Underwood performances: "Alone" and "Making Love (Out of Nothing at All)". Both find Carrie out of her comfort zone, with an rockier edge compared to her sweeter country style - an edge that combined with her home country genre, has proved to be dynamite in her career (Last Name, Before He Cheats). There is only room for 1 rocker-Carrie performance in Round 6 (top 12) though. That 1 successful performance is the one that made us look twice. After the votes, Carrie's top 11 performances ends up ALONE in the top 12.

Performance moving on to round 6: Just as "Alone" was a 'moment' for Carrie, "Summertime" was for Fantasia. Just as "Alone" will compete in Round 6, "Summertime" will as well.
Performance moving on to round 6: As we cut 4 performances tonight, we'd expect those sorry losers to be the 4 wildcard performances that almost didn't make the cut last time. Not true for this emotional love song. Elliott is in with "A Song for You". He also moves forward with "Moody's Mood for Love"
Performance moving on to round 6: Another contestent who advances multiple performances to Round 6 is Kelly Clarkson. She competed in R5 with 4 numbers, including 2 that given 2 weeks apart, is probably the 1-2 punch that gave Kelly her frontrunner status. Congrats to "A Natural Woman" and "Stuff Like That There".

We've already seen Kelly & Elliott move on to Round 6 with multiple performances, while Carrie went 1/2. Having the same fate as Idol's resident country diva is Idol's original laid-back guitar strummer, Jason Castro. He entered R5 with "Hallelujah" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" but will leave R5 with only 1 performance in 1 piece. His Leonard Cohen cover that sent Buckley's cover to the top of the iTunes chart vs. the Judy Garland tune that changed the way we watch The Wizard of Oz. Today, we say goodbye to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".
Performances moving on to round 6: We've seen wildcard performance from Elliott get through the 5th round while one of Castro's performances got defeated. The other 2 wildcarders from R4, Adam Lambert's "Mad World" and Brooke White's "Let it Be" both join Elliott's dedication to Mrs. Yamin in the top 12.

We've already sent 2 KC performances through but of the 2 remaining performances, "Without You" and "I Surrender", only 1 makes it. The top 4 performance that kept Kelly from facing the fate Tamyra was cursed with that week or the top 3 performance that Simon couldn't get over, even during results night. Pulse voted and "Without You" will be in Round 6.

We still haven't discussed the results for Chris Daughtry's "I Walk the Line", Jordin Sparks's "I (Who Have Nothing)" and Kris Allen's "Ain't No Sunshine". Of those 3, only 2 move on to the top 12. First, I'd like to congratulate a performance that moves on to Round 6 - a performance that made leaps and bounds on Idol as far as pushing the limits of song arrangement, continuing this ill-fated contestent's frontrunner status. IWTL moves on.

That means either ANS or IWHN gets cut now. These performances come from 2 winners...both songs were reprised 7-8 weeks after the original performances. While both Jordin & Kris won their respective seasons, they both struggled as mid-pack players at the beginning of the live portion of the show. Kris's "Man in the Mirror" was great but overshadowed by the Gokey-Lambert-Rounds trifecta and Jordin's "Give me One Reason" was technically proficient but couldn't hold up to fellow R&B divas Stephanie, Sabrina, Melinda & Lakisha. Though they both broke through, only one breaks in to Round 6. Check the rankings for the results.

Kelly Clarkson - 3 Elliott Yamin - 2 Fantasia Barrino - 1 Carrie Underwood - 1 Chris Daughtry - 1 Jordin Sparks - 1 Jason Castro - 1 Brooke White - 1 Adam Lambert - 1
Season 1 - 3 Season 2 - 0 Season 3 - 1 Season 4 - 1 Season 5 - 3 Season 6 - 1 Season 7 - 2 Season 8 - 1
Men - 5 Women - 7
Note: Kelly Clarkson & Elliott Yamin are the only contestents with more than 1 performance in the top 12. Coincidentally, these are also the top 2 contestents from last year's All-Star Idol competition on Pulse.
Note: Season 1 & Season 5 each have 3 performances competing. Season 3, Season 4, Season 6 and Season 8 each have 1. Brooke & Jason keep Season 7 in the middle with 2. Season 2...sorry.
Note: 3 of the top 12 were given during top 8 night. 3 of the top 12 were given during top 11 night. 2 of the top 12 were given during top 6 night.
Note: Kris joins David Cook & Taylor Hicks as the 3rd (and final) winner to not have their respective season's #1 performance. Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, Carrie & Jordin have locked that title.
Note: Only 1 performance in the top 12 is not considered a ballad/slow song (up for debate?) - Kelly Clarkson's big band number: Stuff Like That There.
Note: The women have never lost their lead.

Your votes are in! We will now narrow our top 12 performances to the top 9!
First up: Kelly Clarkson's "A Natural Woman". She hit the whistle note that sent her to frontrunner status...please begin Group A.
Kelly Clarkson's "Stuff Like That There". Paula called her a triple threat for this big-bang doo-wop. America made her safe...Pulse puts SLTT in Group B.
Kelly Clarkson's "Without You". Simon couldn't get enough of this performance as he complemented Kelly on results night after the elimination of Nikki McKibbin. Without You is the first video in Group C.
Jason Castro's "Hallelujah". With competition heating up between S7's guys, this performance easily put Castro in the top 12. It gets shoved into Group D.

Brooke White's "Let it Be". Brooke and a lot of the audience cried after this Beatles tear-jerker. They voted. You voted. LIB joins Group C.
Fantasia Barrino's "Summertime". Simon said it was magic, Randy said it was Idol's best ever but Quentin Tarentino missed funky-Fantasia. Summertime will be in Group B.
Elliott Yamin's "Moody's Mood for Love". The judges applauded Elliott for his tricky delivery but worried it wouldn't connect. It's worked so far but for now, MMFL is in Group D.
Chris Daughtry's "I Walk the Line". A big risk that paid off for America...will it pay off for Pulse? It's in Group A.

Jordin Sparks's "I (Who Have Nothing)". It catipulted her into Doolittle territory. Also into Group B.
Elliott Yamin's "A Song for You". Third time was a charm for ASFY, being called a vocal masterclass by Simon. Elliott joins his other remaining performance in Group D.
Carrie Underwood's "Alone". Simon made an extremely risky prediction that came true - Carrie outsold all fellow Idols (soon to take over KC). Alone is in Group C.
Adam Lambert's "Mad World". Simon gave Adam a rare 'standing O' after this eerie number from Donnie Darko. MW is in Group A.
