13 - I Surrender - Kelly Clarkson Top 4 (80s & 90s) week was a tense phase for Kelly, Justin, Nikki & Tamyra. Obvious eliminatee Nikki McKibbin stepped up and delivered 2 great performances, Justin had his best moment of the season, leaving the 4th place spot for one of the two frontrunners. Though Kelly Clarkson suffered from a straining soar throat, she surely soared on Celine Dion’s “I Surrender”. Her cold showed in a couple cracked notes but ultimately, Kelly completed the song with grace and the same diva power that she had exhibited in the many weeks before. As her biggest competition, Tamyra Gray, was tossed the next night, Kelly’s victory was sealed and her Celine cover was clearly a massive aid to her ultimate fate.

12 - Without You - Kelly Clarkson After tackling Aretha twice early in the competition and Celine the week before, Kelly Clarkson went up against the ultimate pop diva of the last 2 decades – for her second song on top 3 night, she sang Mariah Carey’s “Without You”, thanks to the judges pick. With unbelievable control, she proved once again that she was not only Season 1’s best singer, but easily ranked among the best singers on the pop charts back in 2002. But even bigger than her massive voice, her bubbly yet down to earth personality shown through as she was stunned by the audience’s rousing applause, despite it being the 7th week of the finals. Simon called the performance amazing even though he admitted it was a very tough song to sing.

11 – Alone - Carrie Underwood As Season 4’s list was whittled down to 11, Carrie Underwood had built a consistent fanbase but hadn’t yet had a breakout moment. It took Heart’s “Alone” to take Carrie to another level. In this performance, Carrie showed what has always amazed me about her: she never looks like she’s trying too hard. Her singing, even at the high difficulty level of Alone, is always so effortless and natural. While Gina Glocksen and Ramielle Malluby have struggled horribly with this massive chorus, Carrie tackled it without flinching. The seemingly easy performance was followed by one of Simon’s greatest, most prophetic moments: even at the height of Kelly Clarkson’s SUBG popularity, he declared that not only would Carrie win Season 4, she’d outsell all previous Idols…he may sound foolish predicting promising futures for Danny Gokey, Blake Lewis and Katherine McPhee but this spot-on call was simply incredible.

10 - Let it Be - Brooke White The G-Rated Nanny (as proclaimed by Idolatry’s Michael Slezak), Brooke White poured her soul out on Beatles Night, Pt I. After providing original renditions of Love is a Battlefield and You’re So Vain, Brooke picked The Beatle’s final ballad, “Let it Be”. Perched at the piano, Brooke felt every word of the classic inspirational tune and though she was limited by a smaller ranger than some of her competition, Brooke outclassed them with massive emotion and true soul. Brooke cried following the performance and later admitted that it was her defining Idol moment. All 3 judges loved the performance, Randy pointing out that it clearly seemed like Brooke’s dream come true to sing that song on national TV.

9 – Hallelujah - Jason Castro Jason Castro was a true original for American Idol. From his dreadlocks to his anti-interview-stoner personality to his laid-back-guitar-strumming style. His song choices also were breaths of fresh air: amongst a crop of Phil Collins, Lionel Richie and Luther Vandross, Jason broke out Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for his last semifinal performance. Not only did it propel Jason to the upper echelon of the Idol power list, not only did Simon call it brilliant, but the performance sent Jeff Buckley’s version of Hallelujah to the top of the iTunes charts. His heartfelt vocal was felt right down to the cracked final note. Check the video link for one of Paula’s wackiest critiques ever.

8 - Moody’s Mood for Love - Elliott Yamin Elliott Yamin’s shy personality was beginning to be overshadowed by the obnoxious Kellie Pickler, the minnie-mouse voiced Paris Bennett and soul-patrol-king Talyor Hicks but Yamin’s skilled vocal finesse was untouchable. For week 2 of the semifinals, Elliott sang “Moody’s Mood for Love” and absolutely nailed every tricky run, not missing a note nor a word. The judges applauded his natural ability but worried that jazz songs like that couldn’t push the quiet singer to the top. Elliott’s laid back charm, coupled with his impressive vocals, cultivated a similarly laid-back early fanbase before staging an outstanding underdog run to the top 3.

7 - A Song for You - Elliott Yamin Elliott Yamin loved Donnie Hathaway’s “A Song for You”. He used it in his initial audition, he reprised in during Hollywood week (saving him after forgetting the words to an earlier song) and finally, Elliott sang ASFY again during top 6 week. One week after being told by Simon that he needed to show more personality, Elliott new this song, so close to him, would bring out his best. Mentor David Foster worked him until each lick was perfected and it showed. His performance was on a completely professional level, as Simon even called it a vocal master class, a critique he’d later use for Danny Gokey, David Archuleta and Melinda Doolittle. Randy may not have liked the arrangement but Elliott’s pure heartfelt vocal moved Paula to tears.

6 - A Natural Woman - Kelly Clarkson For the first week of the Season 1 finals, Kelly was still taking a backseat to judges’ favorites Justin & Tamyra but for top 8 week (70s week), Kelly was ready to prove that she deserved a frontrunner position. She sang Aretha Franklin’s “A Natural Woman” and natural, it was. Kelly’s smooth R&B style was effortless, as was the intense whistle note that she sprung onto the audience mid-way through. Backed up by grunts galore for the last chorus, that whistle note singlehandedly made Kelly Tamyra’s biggest competition. The judges noted that she was consistently improving and was ready for the big leagues. The performance even inspired one fan in the audience to come on stage and hand Kelly flowers before she even finished singing. On 60s night, a star was born.

5 - I Walk the Line - Chris Daughtry Chris Daughtry was Idol’s edgiest contestant yet and he wanted to push his edginess on 50s night, with 10 contestants competing against him. Chris sang Live’s version of “I Walk the Line” and with Barry Manillow’s guidance, Chris made the Johnny Cash tune sound like it was written in 2006. With sharp lighting and a moody deep intro, Chris entertained all country and rock fans alike, pushing his position as Season 5’s radio-ready frontrunner much further. The performance that was highly praised by judges and fans inspired much controversy – although Daughtry claims he gave credit to Live for the arrangement in the pre-package, Idol producers cut his kudos and made it seem like Chris tried to take credit for his borrowed arrangement.

4 – I (Who Have Nothing) – Jordin Sparks As previously mentioned, Jordin was playing a supporting character to the lead performances by Melinda & Lakisha…until top 11 night. The theme was British Invasion and despite obvious choices from The Beatles & Rolling Stones, bubbly-17-year-old Jordin Sparks chose the melodramatic Broadway ballad by Shirley Bassey, “I (Who Have Nothing)”. From the first note, Jordin’s voice was clear as ever and as the song progressed, her vocal became gloomy and dramatic. It was surely her deepest, most emotional connection to a song thus far, not to mention her out-of-this-world range and innate power. Her connection to the song was proven by Simon’s critique – he said that although she sang it beautifully, the performance made him want to jump off a cliff…did Jordin make Simon feel something?

3 - Stuff Like That There – Kelly Clarkson I was definitely dreading Big Band night on Idol’s first season. I wanted to hear current music and I assumed that the young batch of remaining contestants would struggle with the jazzy style. After a few clunkers, Kelly Clarkson performed and erased any bad feelings for the old-time hits. After mastering Motown, the 60s and the 70s, Kelly MASTERED the big band hit “Stuff Like That There”. Inspired by one of her idols, Bette Middler, Kelly embodied every quirk and pulled every face of the genre that dominated the 40s and 50s. Her vocals were so effortless and her performance was so friggin fun, inspiring Paula Abdul to call KC a triple threat. After conquering Aretha and converting Simon, Kelly Clarkson had surely left her mark on American Idol with Stuff Like That There.

And so it's down to Fantasia's "Summertime" vs. Adam's "Mad World". Both were scaled back numbers on the respective contestant's top 8 week. Both performances yielded standing ovations from the judges table and represented a sentimental milestone for Fantasia & Adam. But which one is #1?????????

2 - Mad World – Adam Lambert After picking up new fans with a tender performance of “Tracks of my Tears”, Adam Lambert polarized America once again, singing the cheestastic disco classic, “Play that Funky Music White Boy”. For final 8 week, Adam was ready to scale it back once more and reveal an eerie, haunting emotion. Adam chose to sing “Mad World”, inspired by the song’s portrayal in Donnie Darko. Everything that the stereotypical Lambert performance is, Mad World was not. No soaring glory notes, no obnoxious facial expressions, no tongue hanging out. Adam sat for the majority of the performance, giving a hushed, emotionally connected vocal performance that left us all awe-struck. As Idol had run overtime that night, only Simon could speak after Adam’s pimp-slotted performance and instead of speaking, Simon gave the only standing ovation that he’s ever given in the show’s 8-year history.

1 – Summertime – Fantasia Barrino Of all 900 American Idol performances, the all-time #1 is Fantasia Barrino’s “Summertime”. Tasia sand the jazz song from Porgy & Bess on Songs from the Movies night, top 8 week of Season 3. Amidst a sea of Whitney, Celiene & Phil Collins covers, Fantasia’s off-beat pick exemplified her sophistocation and maturity on stage. Lying on stage in a flowy dress, Fantasia poured her heart & soul into Summertime, giving a performance beyond the scope of a typical Idol ditty. Simon nailed it with his critique when he said there was a magical element to Fantasia’s vocal and there was, as it represented all the necessary elements to a great Idol moment: a song that took the contestant outside his/her comfort zone, both stylistically and vocally and inspired tears by judges and the contestant. Randy said that, while standing, that Fantasia’s “Summertime” was the best Idol performance of any season…5 years later, the record still stands.

So there you have it! Feel free to post your thoughts, your favorites, which performances suprised you (pleasantly or unhappily), which performances should've been in the top 64 that weren't? Thank you to Fantasia, Kelly, Adam, Jordin, Carrie, David, Kris, Jason, Elliott, Chris, Jennifer, Latoya, Diana, Katherine, Clay and all other Idol finalists for giving us these insanely good, memorable performances!
Especially however, thank you to everyone who voted, especially for those who voted every round! Hundreds of votes were cast along the way to this result (including a huge spike in the final round). I had loads of fun watching the results come in each round and I'm kinda sad it's over. Enjoy the results and video links!
CONGRATS to Fantasia Barrino for having Pulse's #1 American Idol performance of all time, "Summertime".
