While I don't see this being able to hold on for 17 weeks and get the all time record with Down out there, I think it could maybe manage the decade record (15 weeks).

^ thats all i was talking - the decade. Im the 1st to admit it will probably be very, very hard to get anything close to 17 weeks, but again, thanks to Ms. O and only Oprah they may have 14+ weeks in the bag. before that perfirmance (which I think gave the song at a few more lives), Down woulda been a near shoe in in the next week or so, but not now. Oprah may have to wear protective gear against the lambs in another month - if IGF is still #1.

If IGF gets 14 weeks at #1, it's not "dethroning" WBT at all. If it gets 17 weeks at #1, then it breaks the record. It has to beat Mimi & Da Boyz. That means BEP have to fend of Jay Sean for the next month and a half. It's not impossible, but I'm calling fat chance. Oh... I forgot about OSD... nevermind, fall back BEP, second place isnt so bad...

Now that this song is going on for so long, I'm really hoping they can break the record and make it to 17 weeks on the Hot100!

The Deluxe version of the album was released this week on iTunes so IGF from the album is #2 and the one from Deluxe is #219, so maybe that makes it even to PITUSA right now... still not enough to be #1 downloads this week but nice increase in sales :)

I actually don't have a problem with IGF setting a record for "song of the decade" or even matching OSD. The song is (well, maybe was) really well liked, and it's a pretty good song IMO. Head and shoulders above BBP. But I think it goes without saying that I hope it doesn't happen. If it does, hey, it could have been worse. If BBP were to have broken one of those records, I don't even want to imagine it. :o

On the iTunes Main Page it says this is #1... but when you click to see Top 100 it's #2 in pop bars, but many pop bars and numbers don't match in the same order.

Then I'd be against IGAF beating it! "We Belong Together" was pure class.

It should have never been the longest running #1 song, and it's held onto the title far too long.

I said the same thing with BBP, but I REALLY am completely perplexed by this songs crazylicious longevity. I DON'T GET IT. This shit is so repetitve, does NOT make me want to dance, does NOT make me think that tonight will be a good night. ALL it makes me think is WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY STILL PLAYING THIS. IT WAS FUN FOR 4 SECONDS ca. JUNE, and then it got old. I promise I'm not a hater, I love Fergie, was a big fan of Monkey Business, but the stuff they are releasing now, to me, is so shallow, superficial, and not even in the campy way that made My Humps such a success. It's like they've lost all flavor they had in an attempt to appeal to every demographic out there. I can only imagine how the creative process for this song went: "Everyone likes to party right? Let's write an extremely generic, repetitve song that every male, female, and hermaphrodite of any religion race or color can sing loudly while getting dressed, while not offending their parents."
I'm sincerley confused, and would LOVE it if someone could try and explain this song's unending longevity for me. IMO this is of no better quality than Pump It (which was far from the smash that this is), or even Disco Club (which was filler at best on MB). Oprah effect not included, radio airplay is rarely ever strongly affected by a performance on Oprah, at least on a nationwide basis.

You just said the answer to your question yourself... This song is a UNIVERSAL song, everybody can relate to it... We all have gone out to party, we all have felt tired or stressed by work or school, we all have just wanted to throw it all out and have fun... That's the reason this song is a massive hit

This won't die! I really hope this gets 15 weeks and I'd love 17 but I'll settle for the decade title. And WOW at its stable airplay! Today marks 6 weeks at #1 on CHR and next week is all but guaranteed.

Yeah, this song's huge success seems pretty understandable to me. Just like andrik said, it's universal, and it's catchy. Now I can understand people being surprised and questioning about BBP's success, because that one's so unorthodox, but this one seem pretty obvious why it would be so big.

This song's success is understandable to me too... And it's not just in the USA, it's a global smash, so I don't get why some wonder how could this song go so far..

I hope they are making money because there are four of them in the group and only selling a less then a million copies means Fergie is starving !

When your first two singles both wind up in the year-end top three, as Lady Gaga is a lock to do, then the race for artist of the year is over.
Once 'Poker Face' overtakes 'Gives You Hell' as the most played CHR/Pop single of 2009, which should be a done deal by the end of October, the case will indeed be closed.

That's the reason this song is a massive hit Don't worry, I'm quite relaxed. But that doesn't actually answer anything, there are plenty of other universal songs out there, the first one I can think of is Bye Bye, which we all know was not a huge hit by any standard. What I asked was not why this is successful, but rather if there were an explanation for this songs "unending longevity."
