From Billboard: CHART DEBUTS: Last week, Nielsen, owner of Billboard, announced the closing after 36 years of trade publication Radio & Records (R&R). In addition to news items and feature stories, R&R also contained a host of airplay charts powered by Nielsen BDS data. This week, a pair of R&R's charts migrate to Billboard: Active Rock and Heritage Rock (whose reporters combine to comprise Billboard's 28-year-old Mainstream Rock chart panel). Effective this week, the Modern Rock chart also segues to its new name, Alternative (better reflecting the descriptor used among those in the format), and Billboard introduces the 50-position audience-based Rock Songs chart, which ranks airplay among alternative, rock and triple A reporters. (The Rock Songs chart's first No. 1 is "Know Your Enemy" by Green Day). In the Christian genre, the Christian Songs chart expands from 30 to 50 positions, and R&R's Christian CHR list joins Billboard's chart menu. Billboard's sales/airplay hybrid Pop 100, meanwhile, is discontinued. In place of the chart, which launched in 2005 and more recently had more mirrored the Hot 100 in light of heightened digital sales, the airplay-only plays-based Mainstream Top 40 survey, which began in 1992, will track the progress of songs across U.S. pop radio. I wonder what the situation will be with the Canadian charts. Although since nothing has been mentioned about them, I assume no significant changes are expected.

I really hope they add the Christian Rock chart as well, but it doesn't sound like they're planning on it.

Effective this week, the Modern Rock chart also segues to its new name, Alternative (better reflecting the descriptor used among those in the format). That's ironic, considering Modern Rock is way more indicative of the actual music than Alternative is.  |

That's true. What's weird is that in the 80's/early 90's, when the format actually was a mish-mash of genres that was "alternative" to the mainstream, everyone called it "Modern Rock". Stations actually used the slogan "Modern Rock" on the air (See WHTG, WDRE, etc.).
Now, no radio station uses the term "Modern Rock" but that's exactly what the format has become. I guess technically it's "post-modern rock" but no one's ever going to say that on the radio either.

Actually I thought about this more in the past 5 minutes, and maybe "Modern Rock" IS a term that belonged in the 80's. Any art form has its classic, modern, and post-modern phases.
Rock's "classic" period was the 60's and 70's- pretty straightforward rock with guitars. It's "modern" period was the 80's- lots of synthesizers and technology, and also you had metal with its over-the-top image. Rock's "post-modern" period is Nirvana onwards, a reaction to the modern, and, later, an incorporation of both modern and classic elements.

Hopefully with a new name change Billboard will do some altering of the chart formula to give a better reflection of the Alternative label.
I have had problems with the past regarding the fact that the Modern Rock chart and the Mainstream Rock chart were far, far too similar to really justify two charts. Back in the day when Billboard invented the Modern and Mainstream rock charts, the two charts were completely different and it was completely obvious which songs were Modern rock songs and which songs were Mainstream rock songs. Now there is very little difference.

I really hope they add the Christian Rock chart as well, but it doesn't sound like they're planning on it. I would also like to see that lol, the problem is that bands send out specific christian singles all the time, so there really wouldnt be much of a point. |

I have never cared for the moniker "alternative." What is it the "alternative" to anymore? I wish we'd just call it "rock" because that's what it is.

It's Alternative to Active Rock, in most cases.
I know someone's gonna rebuttal saying something like "All the stations play active rock bands anyway." But I for one enjoy hearing Papa Roach and Dave Matthews on the same station, it gives radio a nice contrast.
Either way, there are still many bands that fit into the "alternative" genre that would never perform well on a "Rock" format.

Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks = BDS Active Rock + BDS Rock. So if you want, you can pull the chart together. It requires some work, of course. |
