No More Words by Berlin
Peaked at #23 on the Hot 100 in 1984, but it receives a lot of airplay on 80s music programs.

Modern English: "I Melt With You" The Psychedelic Furs: "The Ghost in You" and "Pretty in Pink" ... and maybe "Love My Way" too The Romantics: "What I Like About You" Romeo Void: "Never Say Never"
And not 80s, but Bob Seger's "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" too

Squeeze's "Tempted" is probably one of the ultimate ones. It gets a ton of AC/Hot AC play.

How did "Tenderness" by General Public do on the chart? I was hearing that quite a bit a few years ago.

I don't think "It's My Life" by Talk Talk did very well either. I don't even recall ever hearing it in the 80s. In fact, I never heard it until after No Doubt remade it.

Most of the songs you guys have mentioned were the highest charting singles from the respective artists. I guess if you look at chart positions alone, the songs look like "flops", but if these previously uncharted artists were even ABLE to get on the hot 100, that means there was interest in them.
I'm interested to see more established artists that had flops that are now classics, and much more popular today than their highest charting songs. Hard to come up with an example... Maybe "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" by Meat Loaf? Or "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol?

Highest charting songs -- Shakedown and Shame on the Moon -- hardly ever get acknowledged today.) Or Squeeze? (Best known song -- Tempted. Highest charting -- Hourglass)

Biggest one of all - Rapper's Delight A top 5 R&B hit that had enough crossover success to break the mainstream top 40 in the late 1970s? Doesn't really seem like it flopped to me.

So if I am listening to Caey Kasem do AT40 in January 1980, I will only hear Rapper's Delight twice and then gone
The song is clearly much bigger than that
This thread up til your post was discussing ties to the Hot 100, my apologies if we were really discussing specific genre charts

"Forever" by Kenny Loggins. It only peaked at number 40 in mid 1985. However, it did receive alot of airplay then, but evidently the stations weren't reporting it. I believe this song would have done better if it had been the first single released from "Vox Humana" rather than the title cut.

Weather Girls - It's Raining Men
The song didn't even hit the top 40 (peaked at #46)

Depeche Mode - "Just Can't Get Enough" New Order - "Bizarre Love Triangle" A lot of New Order songs can fit the bill, especially "Blue Monday". Correct me if I'm wrong, but only "True Faith" and "Regret" made the top 40.

My Charts

That's correct. This label is apparently especially fitting for "Bizarre Love Triangle", as it not only originally failed to chart on the Hot 100 (a 1995 re-release saw it pop in at #98), but it also missed the Top 40 in the UK as well. But in Australia, it went to #5 and began a streak of Top 20 hits for them there.

Seems like almost all of these "flopped" because there were no Alternative stations in the 80s
Adding in "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" by R. E. M. and "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure

Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode White Horse - Laidback Object Of My Desire - Starpoint Just Be Good To Me - S.O.S Band
All were mild charters on the Hot 100 but have now become staples of eighties themed radio shows

The Four Tops' 1982 hit "I Believe In You And Me" never made the Hot 100 and only got to #40 on the R&B charts. With requests largely coming from the big cities, it was so valued enough that Whitney Houston remade the song in 1996, sending it to the top 10 on both charts. The original is still the bigger classic nonetheless.
