I think it's safe to say that "flop" is as relative a term then as it is now. Cases in point: Peter Gabriel - "In Your Eyes" It also had two chart runs, the second coming in 1989. I have to wonder if this would have faded into obscurity if not for that extra lease on life. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run...maybe made it into the mid 20's As mentioned, it's from the 70s. It was also his first Top 40 hit and at the time, his last-ditch effort to make it after previous efforts went nowhere. I wouldn't exactly call that a "flop". "Forever" by Kenny Loggins. It only peaked at number 40 in mid 1985. However, it did receive alot of airplay then, but evidently the stations weren't reporting it. I believe this song would have done better if it had been the first single released from "Vox Humana" rather than the title cut. It also spent 22 weeks on the Hot 100 - not bad for a #40-peaker! Split Enz - I Got You (#53 Hot 100, although it did hit #12 on the UK charts) And it was a MASSIVE Australian #1 (8 weeks, and the top song of 1980 there). Object Of My Desire - Starpoint The peak position is definitely a misnomer here, as it spent 24 weeks on the Hot 100 and ranked within the Top 100 of 1986, one of only a handful of non-Top-20 songs to do so (making the year-end Top 100, that is) the entire decade. Again, I'd call that a success. ----- How did "Tenderness" by General Public do on the chart? I was hearing that quite a bit a few years ago. #27. I actually never heard this until the AT40: The 80s series started, though Premiere interestingly made it an extra for the re-airing of 12/22/84 back in December.

The Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like" This one, despite being a classic today and having several other acts cover the song, only reached #62 on the Hot 100.

Seems like almost all of these "flopped" because there were no Alternative stations in the 80s Adding in "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" by R. E. M. and "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure Well, the format just wasn't that big. According to rocklists.com and Wikipedia research, the format did exist, but it was new and there weren't a lot of stations. 1982 was the true format beginnings (KROQ and WLIR's transistions, WFNX's early-incarnation debut).

True, hence why Billboard didn't create a chart for the format until 1988.

Cher's rendition of The Shoop Shoop song has become the standard for the track, but it only got to #33.

I still hear "Wouldn't It Be Good" by Nik Kershaw here and again. That one made the top 50 in the U.S., but was a huge hit in the U.K., making the top 5 back in 1984.

"Goodbye To You"- Patty Smyth & Scandal
"The Warrior" went top 10, but Goodbye was just as popular in New York at least and it's an early MTV classic. It only reached #59 on Billboard's Hot 100.

How about "Rock Lobster" by the B-52's or "Tom Sawyer" by Rush?

Lindsey Buckingham - Holiday Road only hit number 83 on the Hot 100. Several years back I heard it on the radio for the first time. Now, it gets quite a bit of airplay here. Thanks to the movie National Lampoon's Vacation of course!
