My December was kind of the definition of a messy era. Although it was never really smashing with hits, they could've at least tried with songs like One Minute, Don't Waste Your Time, and How I Feel...they would have never reached the success of the Breakaway singles but they could've been decent hits.
Doll Domination was handled really poorly as well, with all of the cancelled singles and whatnot.
I think Leona's Spirit era could have been handled better. Everything was fine and dandy with Bleeding Love and Better in Time, but I Will Be was a horrible single choice, it should've been Forgive Me or Take a Bow. And then there was the re-release that had absolutely no motive to get people to buy it...
I wouldn't call Britney's Oops a messed up era. Really it had 3 radio hits (Stronger wasn't a smash, but it was a hit) and I think, aside from DLMBTLTK (which is a great album track, but a not-so-great single), they picked the right singles. Stronger *should've* been the biggest hit of the era. Katy's OOTB had a bad single choice, but I wouldn't say the era itself was messed up since it was able to rebound.

B Day, and we all know why. Ashanti's Chapter 2. Ugh.

LOL @ "Oops!...I Did It Again," an album that went DIAMOND being a "messed up" era. Obviously it wasn't. its singles were kinda messed up so even if it went diamond, it only had 2 radio hits. That may have just been due to overexposure. I really don't think the singles could have been better. Unless she went with all Max Martin based tracks, but I don't think it would have mattered at that point. Radio was just about at their breaking point with the teen-pop sound. The singles that "flopped" from "Oops!...I Did It Again", were "Stronger" and "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" which were both released at the end of 2000 or early 2001 which was about the time where radio programmers were just about done with pop music and they started to experience lots of demand for R and B, Rap and Hip Hop music.

Ok, just to add some new perspective into this thread: Trisha Yearwood, "Heaven, Heartache, and the Power Of Love" era.
As much as I LOVE "This Is Me You're Talking To", it was just too slow for radio. Not to mention the fact that it repeats the verses and pre-chorus twice before hitting the chorus, so not exactly your radio-friendly fare. Which is a shame, because the album packs quite a few more accessible ballads, like "Nothing 'Bout Memphis" or "Let The Wind Chase You" (which even features guest vocals from Keith Urban, which would ensure better chart placement).
As for the third single, I feel "I Guess They Call It Falling For A Reason" is a little too lightweight and is actually one of the weaker tracks on the album, as it is not distinct enough, a trait she needs to focus on to separate herself from other countless younger, blonde women in country music. Instead, I would choose the more melodically pleasing "We Tried" or "That's Not A Bad Thing". After that, just release "Cowboys Are My Weakness" just for the heck of it, who knows, it could perhaps emerge a decent, surprise hit.
Seriously, this is arguably the best mainstream country album in YEARS (I would even argue for the decade), and it deserves MUCH more than its measley 200k sold! :'(

Beyoncé - Renaissance.
Her most commercially successful album since I am Sasha Fierce yet it had 0 promo, 0 video clips 0 anything. It's like she disowned that album quickly.

She is about to tour for that album very soon. If she truly had disowned it, she wouldn’t be doing the tour. I think she was trying something very different with this particular album instead of doing the same exact promotional cycle that she is done in the past.

the weeknd - starboy, ed sheeran's =, and camilla cabello's debut are all examples of albums where the first two single pushes were handled solidly, but then things went completely off the rails afterwards (though in the case of camilla, im not complaining ) there's also 30 by adele, where they just. flat out didn't release a third single after oh my god underperformed (which was surprising, yes, but it might have just been a bit too soon after eom and i think a third single could've easily done well with a proper push)

Dawn FM easily. With the right rollout it could've given Abel like two more #1s

Christina Aguilera-Bionic/Lotus/Liberation-All are decent albums in their own right with Liberation being the best one but they were all marketed very bad. "Your Body" a Max Martin lead single in peak pop 2012 not doing anything just seems off and Christina had The Voice at the time to back it up.
Taylor Swift-reputation/Lover-I love all Taylor Swift albums but both albums have messed up rollouts with easter eggs and freefalling songs on radio and Me! being the wrong lead single for Lover.

Mya
Liberation- never even got a release in the U.S.
Moodring
Very sad that only two singles got released
Ashanti
Chapter II-Concrete Rose
I really enjoyed those albums, but both eras felt more underwhelming and quiet compared to her debut era.
Amerie
Touch/Because I Love It/In Love & War
All her singles after "1 Thing" failed to make much impact on the charts.

Yeah, I don't think any of this is 'mismanagement'. Who knows for sure, but with Beyonce, I figure everything rolls out exactly as intended.

Katy Perry - Prism, Witness, & Smile
The singles rollout for all three of these eras was messy and questionable at some point. If things were handled better during these eras, Katy would have more hits than she already does and she’d be in a better spot commercially. All three albums have some pop gems that were never promoted as singles.
