Sept 13, 1980. I had a Top 30 Chart at the time. Excellent chart! No doubt you were a huge Olivia fan with 3 songs in your top 30 and 5 songs from the Xanadu soundtrack. I was a huge fan of the soundtrack also (and dare I say, the movie too!). I was charting Alice Cooper's follow-up at this time, but a few months earlier Clones had peaked at #2 on my chart. So nice to see it doing well on your chart. I also loved the Blondie song, but not until after 1980. Nice to see some early Peter Gabriel love. And the Queen song had a #11 peak on my chart, so both of us loved this one much more than the national charts. And some really nice obscure tunes to those in the states, such as the punk song "Drugs In My Pocket" and the Prism tune (been a fan of theirs since 1978). But my favorite of all is the Klaatu song, which I wish I heard on the radio back then because it would have been a big one for me. Back then a friend of mine was singing the praises of this band and kept telling me about how they were rumored to be the Beatles. I really enjoyed what I heard on the albums, but Top 40 radio in the states would not embrace them. Too bad, because songs like "Knee Deep In Love" are exceptional.

You can tell about my Olivia fixation, eh! If Pulse was around in the early 80's I woulda been all over the place here. LOL. I was surprised that the Monks didn't have a North American hit with this. The song was huge here in Canada, perhaps it was the content, i giess...but it was an anti-drug song too. I think its so cool how much you know about Canadian music. I am really impressed! Klaatu had a great sound. "Knee Deep In Love" was a great memory of the time. One day...maybe in another thread...we need to compare chart peaks of the artists. That way at a glance we can see how an artist's song ranked with everyone.

19. <--all I wrote was "Empty beach", I'm going to guess I meant U2's, "Pride in the name of love". Since I didn't remember hearing that song during its original chart run, I caught on to it late. BUt it could still be some other song......*scratchin head* I would guess that this is Eddie Fisher's daughter Trisha Leigh's single "Empty Beach." Ring any bells? www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJBYdviBJeI

YES!!! Someone else charted the Indecent Obsession song in their top 10! And considering it was already at #9 after only 3 weeks on your chart, you may have even eventually eclipsed my peak of #4 for the song. Unfortunately, that's where it peaked ??? It stayed there the following week and then started dropping. I'm not sure why. Probably one of two reasons. Since the song only peaked at #31 on the Hot 100, my local station probably didn't hold on to it very long. Back in the day (and I'm sure this was true for many of us), it was hard to get access to what you liked. It's easy today. You can just download whatever want, any time of the day. But back then, I just hoped to hear it on the radio or buy the cassingle. I did buy a boat load of cassingles back then ...but this wasn't one of them. So whenever radio killed something that I didn't have in my collection, that was the end of it on my chart as well. Also, I was a teen back then in the early years of my chart (I started in '87). I was heavily influenced by Billboard's chart back then. If the song was peaking and fading, that influenced me to do the same on my chart. In the years to come, especially once I hit my early 20s, I learned (matured) that Billboard means nothing & that you can chart what you like, wherever you want, in any position. The national charts should mean nothing as to what you personally prefer. It just took me a few years to learn that. Had I learned the lesson a lot quicker back then, I'm sure this one would've made my top 5 & lived a longer life.

That way at a glance we can see how an artist's song ranked with everyone. I agree that the Monks didn't make it in America most likely because of the drug reference. Also because punk music wasn't played very much on pop radio then. I can thank a DJ from my childhood for playing Canadian artists on a radio station I listened to. In fact, he played what he thought was good, not what he was "supposed to play". I tried to follow that same path with my charts as well by not getting caught up too much with hype. I like the idea of comparing artists peak. Biggest problem for me is that I haven't summarized my charts (al la Joel Whitburn) to be able to quickly look up an artist's history on my chart. But I have always wanted to do this.

LOL Yet you have some softer pop songs in there as well, which is great to see that variety. When hair band rock began disappearing a few years later, what kind of music did you listen to then? A number of friends of mine with similar interests in music stopped listening to radio completely and focused mainly on classic rock.

LOL I used to slowly browse through as many stations as I could reach to catch as many songs as possible. Music video channels helped also. How I wish I had the Internet when growing up!

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending October 3, 1987
01 01 Michael Jackson Bad 02 02 Whitney Houston Didn't We Almost Have It All 03 04 Madonna Causing A Commotion 04 07 Fat Boys & Beach Boys Wipeout 05 03 Whitesnake Here I Go Again 06 09 Bananarama I Heard A Rumour 07 06 John Cougar Mellencamp Paper In Fire 08 05 Bon Jovi Edge Of A Broken Heart 09 08 ABC When Smokey Sings 10 12 Heart Who Will You Run To 11 16 Bruce Springsteen Brilliant Disguise 12 13 Fleetwood Mac Little Lies 13 15 Cutting Crew I've Been In Love Before 14 14 The Monkees Heart And Soul 15 10 Donna Summer Dinner With Gershwin 16 18 Billy Idol Mony Mony 17 11 Go West Don't Look Down - The Sequel 18 25 Belinda Carlisle Heaven is A Place On Earth 19 20 Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam Lost In Emotion 20 21 David Bowie Never Let Me Down 21 23 Loverboy Notorius 22 22 Natalie Cole Jump Start 23 26 Eddie Money We Should Be Sleeping 24 24 Wendy & Lisa Waterfall 25 30 Richard Marx Should've Known Better 26 27 Carly Simon The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of 27 33 Grateful Dead Hell In A Bucket 28 29 Bee Gees You Win Again 29 31 Def Leppard Animal 30 34 Anita Baker No One In The World 31 32 Starship Beat Patrol 32 ** Tiffany I Think We're Alone Now 33 38 The Hooters Satellite 34 36 Mick Jagger Let's Work 35 40 The Cars You Are The Girl 36 39 Anita Pointer Overnight Success 37 37 Pet Shop Boys It's A Sin 38 ** The New Monkees What I Want 39 ** Laura Branigan The Power Of Love 40 ** Aerosmith Dude (Looks Like A Lady)
Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston contnued to dominate my chart well into the fall of 1987. Whitney had already been at #1 with DWAHIA, but the live video version sent her back to number two for a few more weeks.
Two songs from the "Disorderlies" soundtrack (Bananarama, Bon Jovi) were in the top ten while the stars from the movie (Fat Boys) were at #4 with a song not from the film.
Natalie Cole's "Jump Start" never climbed higher than #22, but she moved up and down the chart for 22 weeks.
The original Monkees were at #14 while the ill-fated New Monkees debuted at #38. "What I Want" would eventually reach #5. I think this was only time an original band and a new line up were on my chart at the same time.
Tiffany made her first chart appearance at #32 with ITWAN, a number one song only five weeks later.

To answer the hair band question, yes I loved(still love) hair band music, but also never strayed from pop either. Definitly got away from the softer pop like Rod stewart, elton john, etc. But continue to this day to stick w/ Rock, pop an dance. I do steer clear of rap an hip-hop though. I must say I liked more rap back in 80s/90s than I do today, which wasnt a whole lot to begin w/ so its now pretty much nill.
This weekends Premiere show is from the 1st weekend of October 1987 so....
My chart, 1st weekend of October 1987:
TW LW 30. 21. Yellow, "Oh yeah" 29. 15. Starship, "Its not over till its over" 28. ** The Hooters, (Not sure what song though, "Satellite" Maybe? which WAS released in '87....*scratching head*) 27. ** Scandal, "Only the young" (a non-release; this album I didn't aquire till I joined Columbia house in '87, which explains why its charting my charts here) 26. 22. Starship, "Hearts of the world" (all I wrote was the title so I'm guessing it was the Starship, I often charted songs that were never released, primarily from albums I owned) 25. 24. Expose, "Point of no return" 24. 25. Eddie Money, "Can't hold back" (another non release charter) 23. 23. Psuedo Echo, "Funky town" 22. ** Natalie Cole, "Jumpstart my heart" 21. ** Whitney Houston, "So Emotional" 20. 18. Expose, "Let me be the one" 19. 14. The Whispers, "Rock Steady" 18. ** Aerosmith, "Dude looks like a lady" 17. ** Debbie Gibson, "Shake your love" 16. ** Tiffany, "I think we're alone now" 15. ** Billy Idol, "Mony Mony" 14. 12. Nu Shooz, "Don't let me be the one" (I *think* thats what song that is, I just wrote the song title down. continuing my trend of charting songs that were not released) 13. 9. Wendy an Lisa, "Waterfall" 12. 11. T'pau, "Heart an soul" 11. 10. Night Ranger, "The secret of my success" 10. 13. Bob Seger, "Shakedown" 9. 6. Bon Jovi, "On the edge of a broken heart" 8. 8. "26 27 Carly Simon The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of 28 29 Bee Gees You Win Again"
Nice to see the Carly Simon song get some action. Such a shame that album was ignored by Top 40 radio at the time. And the Bee Gees only finding acceptance in Europe at the time. This was a great song! Take a look at #22. It would eventually peak at #18.
1987 was a great year of music for me. I found it so much stronger than 1985 and 1986. So many great new acts and pop/dance was everywhere! Madonna and Mellencamp continued hit after hit. Fleetwood Mac were on their way for being my group of the year with 3 number ones. And I fell in love with Debbie Gibson!

Nice to see some '87 charts already posted! Below is mine.
Yet another chart with a non-AT40 song at the top and half of the top 10 also non-AT40 songs. At this point I was accessing music from so many outlets that I was not limited to what radio had to offer, which was not playing the best music available, IMHO.

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending October 3, 1987 Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston contnued to dominate my chart well into the fall of 1987. :) More interesting connections on our chart, but also some major differences. "Bad" was a few weeks away from being #1 on my chart as well, but my indifference towards Whitney Houston really showed up on this week's chart as DWAHIA never made my Top 40. But before you think I hated all things Whitney, I can say that she made my Top 10 twice, including a #1. You were definitely a movie fan! I don't believe the Bon Jovi song was even released as a single. All that's missing from the Natalie Cole situation is possibly landing at #22 on your year end countdown! :) The New Monkees and old Monkees on that same chart is indeed an oddity. Although I never charted the New Monkees, we did have an obscure song in common with "Heart & Soul" making the Top 20 on both of our charts. Another connection we had was the Donna Summer song making both of our Top 10's (she would peak at #7 in a few weeks on my chart). Also nice to see the Bee Gees tune on your chart as well. And the new Hooters song moving up your chart would be a Top 5 smash for me in a couple of months (following up their #1 song "Johnny B"). Both music videos to these songs were exceptional. I will continue commenting on the other charts tomorrow night.

27. ** Scandal, "Only the young" (a non-release; this album I didn't aquire till I joined Columbia house in '87, which explains why its charting my charts here) When I first bought the "Warrior" LP, I thought this would be another top ten hit if it had been the follow up to "The Warrior". I guess it had been planned already to release Journey's version several months later. Natalie Cole at #22 on the first three charts posted?! That's just crazy! :o Nice to see the Carly Simon song get some action. Such a shame that album was ignored by Top 40 radio at the time. I think "Coming Around Again" is the most solid of all her albums. I had to check where her singles had peaked. # 04 Coming Around Again # 12 Give Me All Night # 10 The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of # 07 All I Want Is You # 40 Do The Walls Come Down (By the way, Carly Simon just released a new acoustic version of "Never Been Gone". ) .1....1....6...Solitude Standing - Suzanne Vega Was this released as single? I missed it completely, which would be odd considering I had "Luka" at number one in August. :)

My chart, 1st weekend of October 1987: And since we've been sort of making it a habbit to flash forward 10 years, let me do that........onto 1997: My chart from Mid Sept. to the 3rd wk of Oct 1997 (previous chart spanned the last week of August thru 2nd week of Sept. Dare we go another 10 years?? 2007 anyone? Your hair band love was alive and well in 1987 with the Whitesnake monster #1 song. But it was interesting to see the soft ballad "Can't We Try" at #2, a soul jam at #3, pop at #4, and so on. So a nice variety. Nice to see song obscure tunes in there also. I believe the Nu Shooz song was indeed a single (their 3rd from "Poolside"). Interesting to see your 1997 chart because it demonstrated how things changed so drastically for me in that 10 years because I don't recognize many of the songs. I gave up on pop radio (and charting) by then but I do recognize some of the songs, like your #1 song (which I do like) and I even enjoy the Hanson singles. I originally heard the Trio song when it was released around 1984 if I remember correctly. I think it gained popularity again after it was included in a car commercial in the 90's. I have a feeling I would know even fewer songs from a 2007 chart.

" And the Bee Gees only finding acceptance in Europe at the time.
Oct 3, 1987
Wonderful to see my #1 song on your chart, albeit only at #36. I was wondering if anyone would know that obscure classic. Nice to see the big move for the Bee Gees song as it was moving up quickly on mine as well. I agree that America really missed out on a great song. Also cool to see "Love Power" up so high. Debbie Johnson's song reminds me of Stacy Lattisaw. Nice to see the Pointer Sisters final charting single in America from Beverly Hills Cop II doing well on your chart, but sadly it missed out on AT40. And the wedding song "Together"! Not a sound heard too much in America in 1987, but the songs "Teenland" & "Stay With Me" were very reminiscent of the late 80's sound, but they never made it onto American radio.

.1....1....6...Solitude Standing - Suzanne Vega Was this released as single? I missed it completely, which would be odd considering I had "Luka" at number one in August. :) It was actually the follow-up to "Luka". I think MTV may have even had the music video as an exclusive, so if you weren't watching MTV at that time, no doubt why you missed it.

This weeks AT40 The 80s show is from 10/24/81, an since I dont have any '81 charts, I'll post the 10 year advance. By '91 I had stopped doing a chart EVERY single week, so there are a number of charts that count as 2 wks, or 3 even (a 4 too). I'm going to pick my chart from the 1st 2 weeks of Oct (the next chart actually runs from 3rd wk of OCt thru mid Nov.) Previous chart covered the last 2 wks of Sept, so rather than do LW(eek) TW(eek), I'll do LC(hart) TC(hart) OK? 1st an 2nd weeks of October 1991 TC LC 30. ** Karyn White, "Romantic" 29. ** Vanessa Williams, "Runin back to you" 28. ** Metallica, "Enter sandman" 27. 27. Guns & Roses "you could be mine" 26. 26. Firehouse, "Dont treat me bad" 25. 25. Amy Grant, "Baby baby" 24. 24. Steal heart, "She's gone" 23. 23. Extreme, "More than words" 22. 22. Stealheart, "I'll never let you go" 21. 21. Rhythm Syndicate, "Hey donna" 20. 16. Marky Mark & The funky bunch, "Good Vibrations" 19. 13. * 18. 10. Heavy D & The boys, "Now that we've found love" 17. 17. Amy Grant, "Every heartbeat" 16. 7. PC Quest, "After the summers gone" 15. 11. Color me Bad, "I adore, Mi amor" 14. 12. Extreme, "Whole hearted" 13. 28. Amy Grant, "Thats what love is for" 12. 14. Bad English, "Straight to your heart" 11. 15. Bryan Adams, "Cant stop this thing we started" 10. 4. Firehouse, "Love of a lifetime" 9. 9. Maria Carey, "Emotions" 8. 3. Jomanda, "Got a love for you" <--good song, recored that off Z100 7. ** Or-N-More, "Every other day" 6. 6. Prince, "Cream" 5. 8. Motley Crue, "Primal scream" 4. 5. Guns & Roses, "Don't cry" 3. ** Color me bad, "Do it all for love" 2. 1. Michael W. Smith, "For you" 1. 2. Natural Selection, "Do anything" Off the chart: - Bryan Adams, "Everything I do" - Paula Abdul, "Promise of a new day" - Michael W. Smith, "Place in this world" - Seal, "The Begining" <---this is a guess, I have a "Seal" song falling off an I know it was NOT "Crazy" so it must be a follow up hit, only I find no evidence of follow up charting on Mediabase. - Hi Five, "Cant wait another minute" * The song at #19 is sort of a mystery. I know the song, I even know what tape its on but no idea who the artist or even the name of the song. It was NOT a hit. I caught it off of, I think WFLZ "The Power pig" in Tampa, probably a 'local' hit. The verses of the song was "Rap" from what sounded like a vanilla ice wannabe. But the chorus was taken from some spanish song "I think", "Mama el negro....." somethin somethin..."...a mi papa". I had no idea what they were saying....I played the song for my wife one day an she laughed her ass off (she's fluent in spanish) to the crazy lyric the spanish were singing. The rapping was in english, but I thought the song was catchy enough to chart it :) I could post a wav file of it if anyones interested. p.s. On my website I have a chart archive (National not personal) but on the chart archive page near the bottom I have listed my Personal Year end charts of the 80s. I didn't really have a methodology for computing them so I just used weeks at peak an weeks on chart. So all the number 1s are at the top of the chart, #2,s next, etc. I need to go back someday an recalculate them. shad.is.dreaming.org

This weeks AT40 The 80s show is from 10/24/81, an since I dont have any '81 charts, I'll post the 10 year advance. I have a bigger challenge in that I permanently stopped charting about a month prior in 1991 to care for a family member with a serious health issue. Since many of the songs would have still be active the next month, I will go ahead and post my final chart. I look at this chart to try to determine where I was heading musically if the crisis did not happen in my life. It appears that nothing would have changed. I would have continued to enjoy a variety of music from all genres: AC, Pop, rock, soul, country & even rap. About every type of music is represented in this chart, so I guess it was a fitting way to say goodbye. Lionel Richie was the hottest act at the time on my chart with two duets with Diana Ross, another hit with The Commodores and John Schneider's remake of "Still" all on the chart.
Stevie Nicks's "Bella Donna" was my favorite album of the time. The high debut of L&L was a direct result of waiting for the song to be released as a single, slightly overshadowing Lindsey Buckingham's entry at #20.
I think I remember Billy Idol on American Bandstand's record rating segment. The remix would chart again in 1983 reaching #3.

Here is my 1981 chart. I was surprised back then about how I seemed to be the only one who really enjoyed the new Bee Gees single, which was one week away from taking the top spot. And we finally see a chart where I have a platinum award listed. This one for the great Alan Parsons Project single "Time" which spent 8 weeks at #1 (tied for second longest of all-time).

1st an 2nd weeks of October 1991 TC LC 25. 25. Amy Grant, "Baby baby" 17. 17. Amy Grant, "Every heartbeat" 13. 28. Amy Grant, "Thats what love is for" 3. ** Color me bad, "Do it all for love" 2. 1. Michael W. Smith, "For you" 1. 2. Natural Selection, "Do anything" I can tell you were a big Amy Grant fan. And with the surprise #1 hit by Michael W. Smith, one might even say you were a big fan of Christian crossover artists. Major debut by Color Me Badd and the Natural Selection songs were singles that probably would have went to #1 on my chart if I would have continued to chart the rest of the year. I loved both of them.

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending October 24, 1981 22 12 Andy Gibb & Victoria Principal All I Have To Do Is Dream 40 ** Village People Do You Wanna Spend The Night The #2 debut was impressive and makes sense that it was a song you were already familiar with. The highest debuts I ever had on my chart were similar situations, although I never had a song that debuted higher than #18. And with your high debut of "Trouble", it looks like you had no problem with Fleetwood Mac members going solo! Great to see the Andy Gibb duet up there since it had peaked at #10 for me the prior month to continue and his long-running streak of Top 10 songs on my chart. Also nice to see Cliff Richard doing well on someone else's chart. The biggest surprise would be the Village People song, which was during their short-lived "new wave" look. I actually liked that song as well as the two songs they performed on American Bandstand from that same "Renaissance" album: "5 O'Clock In The Morning" and "Action Man". It was enough for the album to peak at #10 on my LP chart.
