Classic AT40 this weekend is scheduled to be October 19, 1985. In honor of this date, I have once again changed my avatar to reflect my #1 song on this date. I'll post my entire chart later this week. I look forward to seeing everyone's chart.

As I was transferring my chart to the computer I was a bit surprised to find that nearly half of the songs on my chart never made AT40 and many never even made the Hot 100. I knew it was common in later years but was a bit surprised to find it happening already in 1985.
Probably the most unusual was a wonderful song from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem" called "Pie Jesu". Possibly the only operatic song in the 80's released as a single and it was ready to fall off the chart after peaking the prior month at #2.
One of the songs on my chart that I feared would end up being just another obscurity ("Broken Wings") actually did end up making it big. It was already on its 9th week and at #1 on my chart the week it debuted on AT40.

Madonna was at #1 for the 16th week out of the first 38 of 1985.
Whitney Houston was one week away from her first #1 song while her next single, TAY debuted at #31.
This may be one of the few times two instrumentals were charting at the same time (Jam Hammer & David Foster). I think Motown was pushing El DeBarge as their next superstar. He received "star billing" on DeBarge's new single at #39 as well as collaborating with Kenny Loggins at #40.

.4....4....7...Janet - Commodores . Even though The Commodores' first two singles with JD Nicholas ("Nightshift" and "Animal Instinct") were big hits on my chart, "Janet" did not make my top 40. I am wondering if the other two songs were also top five hits on your chart or was "Janet" the biggest hit of the three?

10/19/1985, or in my case, somewhere in Oct 1985, I think I have the correct chart here. I was just weeks away from starting my 'new' documentation scheme for keeping track of all my charts. Prior to that, I just wrote my chart up but never keep track of the date. I'm not sure of the date of the previous chart, so that explains why all the Dabue's.
TW LW 20. ** Bryan Adams, "1 night love affair" 19. ** Simple minds, "Alive & Kicking" 18. ** Jan Hammer, "Miami vice theme" 17. 6. Tears for fears, "Mothers talk" 16. ** ABC, "Be near me" 15. 10. Paul Young, "I'm gonna tear your playhouse down" 14. 9. Thompson twins, "Lay your hands" 13. ** The Hooters, "And we danced" 12. 15. Madonna, "Sho be do" 11. ** Sting, "Fortress around your heart" 10. ** Phil Collins, "Seperate lives" 9. ** Loverboy, "Lovin every minute of it" 8. ** Heart, "Never" 7. 4. Aretha Franklin, "Whos Zoomin who" 6. ** Mr Mr, "Broken wings" 5. ** Aha, "Take on me" 4. 5. Lyndsay Buckingham, "Holiday road (From National Lampoons Vacation)" 3. 3. Starship, "We Built this city" 2. 2. Glen Fry, "You belong to the city" (this would hit #1 next chart but after that "Communication" went back to #1) 1. 1. The Power Station, "Communication"
Strangely enough, just this 1 chart, actually lists 40 songs. All the rest are Top20. I'll list the rest of the chart now an notate the songs that fell out of the top20 w/ an * 21. Tina Turner, "One of the living" 22. ZZ Top, "Sleeping bag" 23. Tears for fears, "Head over heels" * 24. David Foster, Love theme from St Elmos fire * 25. OMD, "So in love" 26. Don Henley, "Sunset grill" * 27. Tears for fears, "Shout" * 28. Rick Springfield, "State of the heart" * (former #1) 29. Madonna, "Pretender" * 30. DeBarge, "Whos holding Donna now" * 31. Dire Straits, "I want my MTV" * 32. Scriti Politi, "Perfect way" 33. Godly & Creme, "You make me wanna cry" 34. Madonna, "Dress you up" 35. Kool & the gang, "Cherish" 36. Survivor, "Burning heart" 37. Stevie Wonder, "Part time lover" 38. Whitney Houston, "Savin all my love" 39. Gino Venneli, "It hurts to be in love" 40. Night Ranger, "4 in the morning"

UU-BRU Radio Playlist For Week Ending October 19, 1985 10 10 Don Henley Sunset Grill 21 27 Kenny Rogers Morning Desire 33 36 Roger Daltrey After The Fire 39 ** El DeBarge with DeBarge You Wear It Well 40 ** Kenny Loggins & El DeBarge I'll Be There Great to see we have the Don Henley classic in the top 10 on both of our charts. And even more of a rarity is the Kenny Rogers song doing well on both of our charts. Excellent song. Then there's the Roger Daltry song, which should have followed both of leads and went into the Top 40 nationally. And you are right about Motown pushing the Debarges. I think they were hoping El would be the next Michael Jackson. Really a shame that he didn't quite live up to the billing and even sadder to hear about all of his legal problems the past couple of years. Your love for Madonna was very apparent in 1985. For me, her best chart success was yet to come in the following years.

I am wondering if the other two songs were also top five hits on your chart or was "Janet" the biggest hit of the three? "Janet" was the biggest of the three. When Richie left the Commodores, I wasn't sure the group would hit big again. But surprisingly, they ended up scoring three top 10 hits on my chart without Richie: "Only You", "Janet" and "United In Love".

My chart looks a little different for all those. But looks like we have some in common. Good to see some Corey Hart love but this would be his lowest charting song for me.
Surprised not to see anyone else not charting the Motels, always thought they were underated...yet surpirsed to see the Love theme from St. Elmo's all over the place..lol.
But as you can see...still dancing my way through the 80's..lol

Surprised not to see anyone else not charting the Motels, always thought they were underated The Motels had just fallen off my chart after peaking at #13. After seeing Diana Ross on a couple charts, I think must have tired of "Eaten Alive" quickly, it was on and off the chart after only 5 weeks, peaking at #17. Wasn't there quite a promo push for the song considering the Michael Jackson factor?

For the month of October thru the middle of Nov. 1996: TW LW 29. 29. Los Del Rio, "The Macarena" 7. ** Cantalina, "Excuse me Mr. Bouncer" 6. ** Genuine, "My pony" 5. 2. Le Click, "This is your night" 4. ** Ghost town DJs, "My boo" 3. ** Envouge, "Dont let go" 2. ** La Bouche, "Fallin in love again" 1. ** Fun Factory, "Dont go away" Very strange to see 6 out of your Top 7 songs debuting. But with the way you were charting with a lengthy time span, that helps explain it. The Fun Factory song should have done better on the national chart. And I must have been listening to radio more than I thought in 1996 because I recognize most of the songs on the chart. And who can forget the Macarena! ;)

10/19/1985, or in my case, somewhere in Oct 1985, I think I have the correct chart here. TW LW 4. 5. Lyndsay Buckingham, "Holiday road (From National Lampoons Vacation)" 1. 1. The Power Station, "Communication" Strangely enough, just this 1 chart, actually lists 40 songs. All the rest are Top20. 39. Gino Venneli, "It hurts to be in love" Good week for you to expand to the Top 40 because it allowed you to include a more obscure song that was riding on my chart at #5 this week by Gino Vannelli. Great song. The Power Station song at #1 was a big surprise since I don't recall seeing that on anyone elses chart. Were you a big fan of "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On" also? And seeing the Lindsay Buckingham song was odd because it was a Top 10 hit for me two years earlier. Was it brought to life again with a new Vacation film?

And now the 10 years into the future chart: October, 1995 TW LW 5. ** Everything but the girl, "Missing" 1. 2. Sophie B Hawkins, "As I lay me down" Excellent to see one of my favorite songs of the 90's at #1 on your chart. And once again, I actually recognize most of the songs. Hot debut for "Missing". I really enjoy that song and it bet it ultimately went to #1 on your chart?

10/18/85 1 2 Say I'm Your #1 - Princess 10 8 Shame - Motels 16 18 Somebody Took My Love - Durrell Coleman 34 41 Kayleigh - Marillion You answered Princess' plea by placing her at #1! She has a great voice and I wish more people would have satisfied her request. The Motels song was on my chart in August. It spent one week at #40 and then dropped off. I'm curious if anyone else ever noticed that the Durell Coleman song sounds like a composite of two other 80's songs. The melody of the verse sounds like "Too Late For Goodbyes" by Julian Lennon and the chorus sounds like "Alibis" by Sergio Mendez. But it works very well. But I was most happy with someone else recognizing the Marillion song. "Kayleigh" was a Top 10 song on my chart and it's a beauty.

Wasn't there quite a promo push for the song considering the Michael Jackson factor? Not just Michael, but Barry Gibb also co-wrote, co-produced, and sang background vocals on this one. Three superstars on one recording. I love it mainly for the production. It really makes my speakers dance!

Oct 18, 85 01 02 Shame - Motels 20 17 Mona With The Children - Doug Cameron 46 39 One More Colour - Jane Siberry I know someone who will be very happy to see the Motels were just at #1 on your chart! Really cool to see the Doug Cameron song on your chart. Such an important song to further the cause for human rights. Nice to see Jane Siberry on your chart way back then. It would take another 5 years for her to debut on my chart with "Life Is A Red Wagon".

The Gino Vanneli song would vault into my top 10, might of hit #1, can't quite remember. As for the "Holiday road" song: well, 2 years earlier, 1983, I wasnt into music, didnt have a chart, so it was kind of 'new' to me, I was digging it at the time so I charted it. I wasnt a big fan of the power station..........just.....loved that song, "Communication" from the 1st time I heard it. I think it racked up around 9weeks up there, similiar to the song it knocked OUT of #1, yet another obscure song, Rick Springfields, "State of the heart". I was a sucker for ballads, or even psuedo ballads. I think even the Niel Diamond song would top my chart shortly there after. In 1984 I loved Peobo Brysons "If ever your in my arms again" THere was another ballad in '84 I loved too, can't recall at the moment.
And I'm pretty sure Everything but the girl did hit #1.

I was a big Motels fan. They had 2 other number ones "Only The Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer".

I was a big Motels fan. They had 2 other number ones "Only The Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer". They never quite reached the top on my chart but had many top tens and a couple of near misses. "Take The L" was their biggest hit for me getting up to #3. The 2 near misses peaked at #11, "Forever Mine" and "Remember The Nights". I loved Martha Davis' voice, too bad her solo career never took off. She charted briefly with her first single and then never again.

Let's do a two-fer this week! Classic AT40 is playing 11/19/1983 for the 80's program and playing 10/29/1977 for the 70's program. Although I wasn't charting in 1977, hopefully we have a few people who were that can share their charts from that great year for music.

My inspiration for starting a chart of my own in 1978 was having direct participation in tabulating the monthly music chart for our grade school paper. Some charts were shorter than others, but I think it was because the teacher had to trim it to make it fit. After helping the older kids a few times, I decided to do my own chart starting over Christmas break 1977. This chart was the first survey for the 1977-78 school year so there were no previous positions listed.
OCTOBER 1977
1. KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND - Keep It Coming Love 2. Star Wars Theme(I do not know if this is John Williams or Meco, the list only has the movie title) 3. RAM JAM - Black Betty 4. PAUL NICHOLAS - Heaven On The 7th Floor 5. STEVE MILLER BAND - Jungle Love 6. LINDA RONSTADT - Blue Bayou 7. ELO - Telephone Line 8. SHAUN CASSIDY - That's Rock 'N Roll 9. KISS - Christine Sixteen 10. DEBBY BOONE - You Light Up My Life 11. DAVE MASON - We Just Disagree 12. HEATWAVE - Boogie Nights 13. FIREFALL - Just Remember I Love You 14. SEALS & CROFTS - My Fair Share 15. ANDY GIBB - I Just Want To Be Your Everything

This would be Pat Benatar's second and last #1 (following "Shadows Of The Night").
Even though "Total Eclipse of The Heart" was on it's way down it was only after spending almost 3 months at the top of the chart and almost 6 months total at this point, it would eventually fall off right before the end of the year. To this day, one of my favorite songs of all time.
MTV was a huge factor for me during this time. I charted alot of songs early because of it and some exclusively because of it.

This was only my 6th chart and I was still working things out...lol. At this point, only records that I owned charted, which explains why so many songs are from earlier in the year.

50 50 State Of Independence - Donna Summer I am curious about this. Were you still charting SOI a year later? Was it the biggest hit from her 1982 album?
