I think it'll be quite difficult for anyone to beat George at this point. The charts move too slowly, the age discrimination hits a little younger, artists are releasing albums slower, labels are more likely to push for Mediabase-only #1s.... Not saying it's impossible, but I think it'll be very difficult. I think the closest people like Kenny/Tim/Keith will lose relevance sooner rather than later, and certainly do not have an entire decade of consistent #1s left in them. 13 #1s is not a small feat; for Kenny to do that, he would have to get #1s in every year of the next decade, plus a 2nd #1 in almost half of them. When George himself was their age, he only had 6 more Billboard #1s in him. (And they are all showing waaaay more signs of losing relevance than George was in 2004, which is when he was about their age, lol) Same thing with Blake Shelton/Luke Bryan/Jason Aldean... they are only sitting at about half of George's total, and they are all pretty close to 5 years older than George was when he was at their same total (going by Billboard #1s only, he hit 25 #1s in 1992/1993 at the age of 40). He picked up #1s for almost 20 more years at that point, and the chances of Blake/Luke/Jason continuing to hit #1 with all of their songs 20 years from now is pretty slim imo. They are all showing signs of having passed their prime, whereas George was arguably still approaching his prime at that point. Luke Combs is off to a great start, but can he sustain this red-hot momentum for the next 30 years? Imagine, Luke Combs in 2050, continuing to hit #1 every time out of the gate The way that the industry works nowadays, I just don't see it. But we'll see! George is the type of superstar that you just do not see very often. We will be very lucky if we get to see his replacement in our lifetimes. {Spoiler} Especially because he actually has 60 #1s, not 44 Luke Combs at the rate he's going if he keeps cranking out the hits would not take very long for him. He's going for his 8th straight now I believe if I'm not mistaken? Looks like he's working on his 9th. So, 9 #1s in essentially 5 years (2016-2020) means he would need to keep doing this for 25 years to meet George's Billboard record. That is 25 years of hitting #1 with EVERY song, on Billboard, and never slowing down... Again, not impossible, but definitely not likely given how slowly the industry moves nowadays. George himself didn't get there by hitting #1 with every single song. He was just lucky enough to have charts move extremely quickly for most of his career. I mean, he had like 100 singles over the course of his career, approximately 95 of which were huge hits, but only 44 of which hit #1 on Billboard. If he was only able to get approximately 50% of his singles to #1, there is definitely no way that a 100% success rate for nearly 30 years is an achievable goal for Luke. And even if Luke does hit #1 with every song for the next 25 years, he is definitely not going to be able to hit #1 with every single song for the next 34 years in order to match George's 60 #1s. I'd love to see it happen, but I feel like the modern country music industry is going to actively work against people accomplishing such goals at this point in time.... Unless the charts speed up dramatically in the next decade, allowing A-listers to get 4 #1s in a single year again, I don't think anybody will be coming close to George.

FINALLY! I have added Miranda Lambert to the list of those artists with the most #1 hits. Her quintet of chart toppers are:
1. The House That Built Me-2010-chart wise, her biggest hit 2. Heart Like Mine-2011 3. Over You-2012 4. We Were Us-with Keith Urban-2013 5. Bluebird-2020
As far as Drowns The Whiskey is concerned, the Jason Aldean single, the first time I heard it, I had to strain to hear Lambert in the song. The second time I heard it, I finally heard her. However, she only sings the chorus to the song and Aldean literally drowns her with his vocals.

onebuffalo How many artists have had #1 singles on the country chart after they passed away? I know of 3 Hank Williams Sr., Keith Whitley and Elvis Presley but I’m sure there are more.

onebuffalo I may be asking some questions sporadically but my goal is to have all the artists who are on your list #1’s in a playlist. Today I’m asking about Mel Tillis. I actually have his final #1, Southern Rains on the CD of the same name. I recently found on Amazon Mel Tillis Greatest Hits from Curb records. It has 3 more #1’s beside Southern Rains. It has Good Woman Blues, Coca-Cola Cowboy and I Believe In You. I’m assuming this compilation is original versions? Also where can I get his other 2 #1’s missing from the compilation Heart Healer and I Ain’t Never?

Wonder where Gene Autry would be with his songs that came out before 1944? Most of his songs came out before the charts began. I noticed the op is based on the Hot 50 Bilboard chart and not on the Airplay charts. A lot of these artists had more Airplay charts than Hot 50 than what is on here.
These charts are weird.
For example, Lorne Greene is listed as a country artist, and he scored number 1 on the Hot 100 with "Ringo." But, he was not number on any of the country charts if it was Hot 50 or country airplay charts.
I noticed a lot of artists with hardly any number 1 songs for hot 50, but got more than 5 on country airplay. I know for sure Sammy Kershaw never have less than 5 number 1s. George Strait supposed to have like around 60 number 1 airplay charts, but shows he is less than 30. I do think somebody needs to recheck these stats for the artists to make sure they are correct.

This thread is updated exclusively with how many Billboard Country Airplay #1s an artist has. It was based on the Hot Country Songs Chart, until it became the Country Airplay chart in 2012. Not sure where you're seeing George Strait with less than 30 #1s, because the OP clearly has him at 44, which is his correct total of Billboard Hot Country Songs/Country Airplay #1s. His total of 60 comes from including Mediabase/R&R/Gavin Reports #1s also. Sammy Kershaw is not included because "Don't You Know She's Beautiful" is his only Billboard #1, and an artist needs at least 5 Billboard #1s to show up in this thread. Feel free to count #1s however you want to, but for the purposes of this thread, onebuffalo is only using Billboard Airplay.

It’s crazy to think by the end of this decade we could see Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean in the top 10. I have no issue with either guy’s music but being in the same top 10 just goes to show their popularity at radio. It makes me wanting to ask how popular was Conway Twitty back in the day? I love Conway but this man never won any Entertainer or Make Vocalist awards and he’s second all time on this list.

Webb Pierce is ft. as a sample There Stands The Glass on Sam Hunt's Hard To Forget. Webb sings on the sample. I think this is like when Hank Williams and his son did There's A Tear In My Beer and Nat King Cole with his daughter on Unforgetable. I believe Sam is giving Webb credit on Hard To Forget even after he is dead like the other two. If they changed Webb to a feature artist on the song? This would give him his 5th number 1. They gave Justin Bieber 1 number 1 for 10,000 Hours. I think it would be fitting with all the flack Sam gets with his songs, giving Webb the spotlight on Hard To Forget would pay this great legend a tribute.

onebuffalo What song do you have as the biggest hit of the 80’s? I saw your post at work and I decided to do some digging. I ranked the top 25 hits between 1985-2010 right after Billboard did the same (in March, 2012). All of those came from the 1990s and 2000s, so I decided to rank ALL 33 multi-week chart toppers of the 1980s. You're getting a twofer here, so I hope you enjoy BOTH lists. Remember, this is based on Billboard country chart performance and not personal preference. Ready? In 2010, Billboard released their first list of the top 25 artists over the past 25 years. George Strait was the big winner (surprise?). Shortly after that list was published, I listed the biggest hits over that same time span (1985-2010). Here it is (ranked by weeks at #1 followed by weeks in the top 40): 1. Amazed-Lonestar-1999-8-37 2. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere-Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett-2003-8-27 3. The Good Stuff-Kenny Chesney-2002-7-29 4. Live Like You Were Dying-Tim McGraw-2004-7-21 5. There Goes My Life-Kenny Chesney-2003-7-19 6. Have You Forgotten-Darryl Worley-2003-7-19 7. Somebody Like You-Keith Urban-2002-6-40 8. How Forever Feels-Kenny Chesney-1999-6-34 9. 19 Somethin'-Mark Wills-2003-6-33 10. Ain't Nothing 'Bout You-Brooks & Dunn-2001-6-28 11. Breathe-Faith Hill-1999-6-27 12. Beer For My Horses-Toby Keith and Willie Nelson-2003-6-27 13. Just To See You Smile-Tim McGraw-1998-6-25 14. I'm Already There-Lonestar-2001-6-25 15. Jesus, Take The Wheel-Carrie Underwood-2006-6-23 16. As Good As I Once Was-Toby Keith-2005-6-22 17. Our Song-Taylor Swift-2007-6-21 18. It's Your Love-Tim McGraw and Faith Hill-1997-6-20 19. Better Life-Keith Urban-2005-6-20 20. How Do You Like Me Now-Toby Keith-2000-5-41 21. Good Morning Beautiful-Steve Holy-2002-5-36 22. Something Like That-Tim McGraw-1999-5-34 23. I Love You-Martina McBride-1999-5-32 24. I Hope You Dance-Lee Ann Womack-2000-5-29 25. My Next Thirty Years-Tim McGraw-2000-5-28 Now, I have decided to rank ALL 33 multi week #1s of the 1980s. I hope you enjoy this. Ready? 1. Forever And Ever, Amen-Randy Travis-1987-3-13 2. My Heart-Ronnie Milsap-1980-3-13 3. Lookin' For Love-Johnny Lee-1980-3-10 4. Coward Of The County-Kenny Rogers-1980-3-09 5. A Woman In Love-Ronnie Milsap-1989-2-24 6. Always On My Mind-Willie Nelson-1982-2-15 7. Islands In The Stream-Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton-1983-2-15 8. I'll Leave This World Loving You-Ricky Van Shelton-1988-2-15 9. Why Not Me-the Judds-1984-2-15 10. Houston Means I'm One Day Closer To You-Gatlin Bros.-1983-2-15 11. Lost In The Fifties Tonight In The Still Of The Night-Ronnie Milsap-1985-2-14 12. I'm No Stranger To The Rain-Keith Whitley-1989-2-14 13. Have Mercy-the Judds-1985-2-14 14. Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses-Kathy Mattea-1988-2-14 15. Mind Your Own Business-Hank Williams, Jr., Reba McEntire, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, and Reverend Ike-1986-2-14 16. When You Say Nothing At All-Keith Whitley-1988-2-14 17. Somewhere Tonight-Highway 101-1987-2-14 18. To All The Girls I've Loved Before-Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias-1984-2-13 19. The Church On Cumberland Road-Shenandoah-1989-2-13 20. One In A Million-Johnny Lee-1980-2-13 21. I Believe In You-Don Williams-1980-2-12 22. She Got The Goldmine I Got The Shaft-Jerry Reed-1982-2-12 23. Just To Satisfy You-Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson-1982-2-12 24. I Told You So-Randy Travis-1988-2-12 25. There's No Gettin' Over Me-Ronnie Milsap-1981-2-11 26. Love In The First Degree-Alabama-1981-2-11 27. Never Been So Loved In All My Life-Charley Pride-1981-2-11 28. I am not surprised. "Forever And Ever, Amen" is the one song from the '80's that will pop up on occasion most often on the main station here. In fact of the other 32 I thing "Love In The First Degree" is the only other one I've heard on there in the last 10+ years.

onebuffalo Both lists are interesting. Mainly your 80’s list. I just got Joel Whitburn’s Top Country Singles book yesterday and I wanted to compare your list to his. I’m not at home currently but from what I can remember the top 5 is the same except for he has “Coward Of The County” at #1 and “Forever And Ever, Amen” at #4. Like I’ve stated he ranks his songs in this order weeks at #1, peak position, top 10 weeks, top 40 weeks then total chart weeks. I’ll post his top 25 decade end charts from the book in my Billboard Country #1’s thread later or maybe I could just make a Joel Whitburn decade end thread? Don’t know if that would be allowed or not. Also I find it interesting that he has posted a lot of artists top 5 biggest hits. The book is great. Well worth the money I paid for it.

Where do you guys think Blake will land when he's through? How close to 40 will he get? I think he’ll end up in the top 5 somewhere. 12 more chart toppers to tie Conway doesn’t seem out of the reach for him but he’d have to have at least 2 number ones every year for the next 6 years to do so. I’m gonna say he’ll at least pass Alabama or tie Ronnie Milsap at 35 chart toppers. So 33-35 number ones for Blake for me.
