Dirty Mind came out in '80. Controversy cam out in '81. 1999 came out in '82. Soft and Wet, Head, Do me Baby, Sexuality & Dirty Mind (the single) had all been publicly banned at the radio stations that werent restricting his play to after midnight. But really, you're a Clay Aiken "fan". That's all you had to say. I get it. Damn males who are into other males are ok as long as they pretend they're straight, eh? LOL @ mentioning Prince's first couple of albums. Dirty Mind + Prince + Controversy + 1999 sales <<<< Off the Wall's sales The point is MJ was a good boy long before the mainstream caught up with Prince. Again, I ddint want to get bogged down in some MJ/Prince compare and contrast. Talk about missing the point completely. Really woman, focus. I was using them as relative stand-ins for a simliar situation; Any openly gay male act, of which Adam is effectively the first (big money major label debut), is going to be up against a lot of anti-gay panic. Prince and MJ were up against tons white panic expressed as fear & anxiety over black sexuality. It didnt matter if the act was G-rated, if it was black it was scary to a large segment of the population. I believe *A* Prince, who agitates and goes over the top, changes the perception of "the line" and makes acts that would have been at it's edge before him seem well within the bounds of "acceptable". More people find an MJ acceptable after a Prince, not before. I was saying this because I thought people expecting Adam to be a safe pop star were maybe a bit silly, because that wont be possible for any gay act until *A* gay Prince clears out a lot more cultural space. Back to the compare & contrast: Prince was not some obscure r&b radio-only niche act. He walked out of the 70's with the kind of press file most acts take a decade of outrages to put together, and he did it making music that fit no format and was being ceremonially banned nationwide anyways. The Controversy album was all about his reaction to being nothing but a protest & boycott magnet. The cultural impact Prince had is not going to be reflected in some glance of his early BB chart positions. ------ Oh, and I'm adding on Modify that I actually agree that he was dumb to do 3 or 4 dirty things instead of just 1. Why would anyone tune in for more? Gaga has tons of smut left in the kitty to yank out when people get bored. I can see her doing it with a robot.

Sigh. Its a sad day when an obnoxious attention whore like Adam Lambert because the posterchild for the gay struggle. A very sad day. What he did was not enpowering, enlightening, honorable, or pushing boundaries in any way. He says he's just being himself. Good for him. But why couldn't he just focus on giving a well choreographed, nice, polished performance? Even with the S&M setup, why the crotch thing? Why go out of his way to kiss some random band member? Why flick off the audience? Obviously, because he wanted the attention. Well, he got his wish.
The only problem is that even without the crazy antics, the performance itself was utter s**t. He was screaming off pitch, out of breath, and the dancers were all over the place... the whole thing was an unprofessional trainwreck. All those points I mentioned have nothing to do with his sexuality. If he was straight, I would be just as annoyed. I've yet to see Justin or Usher shove any chick's face into their crotches during a performance. And if they did that on basic television, you best believe there would be a big uproar. Or are you forgetting all the controversy surrounding Eminem's antics back in the day? He's (supposedly) straight, remember?
And don't bring up Gaga. She is more talented than Adam, and her performance showed that. She's a singer who actually knows about something called "restraint." Her performance was on pitch, well excuted, and fresh. IIt was out there, but looked proffesional- a stark contrast to Adam's. And last time I checked, there was no tongue kissing and she didn't shove anyone's face into her crotch. Try again.
As for MJ and Prince... whatever. I guess MJ should've thanked Prince for convincing those 60 million people to go pick up Thriller. That's a lot of influence, huh? Its too bad Prince couldn't make his own blockbuster sell 1/3 of that.

Excuses don't seem necessary - the album opened to very good numbers and very good (especially considering he came off Idol) reviews. Hopefully WWFM blows up and we can forget about FYE and this performance.
The AMAs are becoming an awesome annual event - all the stars seem to want to be a part of it. Still kinda can't get over that Gloriana/Gaga upset haha.

I guess it's just me, but I don't see how anyone could say opening up with a little over 200k during Black Friday, recession or no recession, is good. Adam probably would have sold a lot more had he not pulled that little stunt of his.

Adam probably would have sold a lot more had he not pulled that little stunt of his. I think it's hard to say what's good or bad for him. One on hand, he has tons of hype, it's Black Friday and he's had great promotion. On the other, his music & image is abrasive and hard to swallow for many, numbers are way down from years past, there is virtually no radio airplay and he outsold the man who beat him more than 2:1. As a fan, I would've loved to see him sell 300+ but I don't think it was going to happen, regardless of what happened on the AMAs. I was actually expecting somewhere around 150 so I'm pleased with 210-230.
