I wish their albums would get the premium anniversary reissue treatment we've seen from other acts. There are so many good bonus tracks and b-sides which are unavailable.

Quick question- I know Debra Killings sang on a number of TLC tracks. Though do we know for sure that she was in place of T-Boz on "No Scrubs" and that T-Boz also didn't song on there? Same for Chilli and "Creep." Thanks.

And Chilli didn't do any backgrounds on "Creep," just Debra.

^Thanks. Ae those the only two such instances like that? I gather Lisa didn't ever sing, even though she lip-synched to some singing parts in videos.

No, there are actually a lot of examples like that, lol. Debra was the most consistent player on backgrounds. There are several tracks where T-Boz and Chili were both on backgrounds though. Their album credits are honest about it and list who did them on each track. But TLC was never a typical girl group. Aside from the fact that one of them didn't sing, they were more like three individuals each giving a different flavor than a girl group about harmonizing with each other.

OK. So, aside from those two tracks, there were others where T-Boz or Chil sang lead and the other didn't sing on the track at all? Interesting. i've seen the background-vocals credits, though I don't think they ever listed who sang lead- for obvious reasons, i gather. :)

^No- by obvious reasons, I mean we can differentiate between T-Boz and Chil when they sang lead/co-lead vocals. Ling is saying, I think, that there are other tracks in which T-Boz or Chil sing sole lead for the verses, and on that same track, whoever didn't sing lead didn't sing on that track. Like with "Creep" and "No Scrubs."

The mixing on the video version of No Scrubs (with Left Eye's rap) is different and they had T-Boz record vocals for. I didn't notice until recently, but aside from having Left Eye the video mix is punchier, you can really hear it on the chorus. The album version is just Chilli, Debra, Kandi, and Tiny (technically more Xscape members on it than TLC lol).
Here are T-Boz's isolated vocals from the video mix:

^Good find. Still find it odd that Lisa's rap was not on the album version. Though that was the album she could not stand behind. Her voice was MIA from the album, it looks, despite co-writing four tracks that appeared on the album.

All of this discussion of when and if the members of TLC did any backing vocals is wild, yet I'm not surprised.
In some ways I feel like TLC is the Fleetwood Mac of the 90s with all the interpersonal drama but no one actually leaving.

Her voice was MIA from the album, it looks, despite co-writing four tracks that appeared on the album. Well Lisa has some parts on "I'm So Good At Being Bad" and "If They Knew" and a verse on both "My Life" and "Shout," so she's not completely MIA. Still she certainly came across more like a guest member, and it is odd she didn't get a verse on the album version of "No Scrubs." The tracks on their debut all credit backing vocals to "TLC" (and Debra Killings). Then on CSC most say T-Boz and Chili specifically, but then "Waterfalls" credits TLC with backing vocals. So did Lisa actually do some backing vocals?

Lisa’s beef with pretty much everybody is why her rap isn’t on the album; she knew the label was planning to make it a single and purposely missed their deadline to turn her verse in. And since the single and album both came out the same month, the physical product had already been manufactured by the time she did complete it,
That’s also why Dallas came up with the Vic-E character that raps on Silly Ho; per T-Boz, they almost decided to let “her” do all the rapping on the album bc Lisa refused to come to the studio. I’m still surprised they managed to get 4 verses out of her.

jeng- been a while since I listened to Fanmail, so I forgot about those. She is credited as awriter, so makes sense. And you deleted your comment above, so it looks like I'm responding to myself.

George Craig has been making some interesting tweets about TLC lately. The tweet below was interesting and reminded me of this earlier post: Lisa’s beef with pretty much everybody is why her rap isn’t on the album; she knew the label was planning to make it a single and purposely missed their deadline to turn her verse in. And since the single and album both came out the same month, the physical product had already been manufactured by the time she did complete it, That’s also why Dallas came up with the Vic-E character that raps on Silly Ho; per T-Boz, they almost decided to let “her” do all the rapping on the album bc Lisa refused to come to the studio.
