This is a random question but has GaGa's The Fame already outsold Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad and Beyoncé's I Am... Sasha Fierce? I know that if you add the total for the EP she definitively outsold them, but I'd like to know if she made it with the album and the re-release only.

WOW at Kesha. Everyone underestimated her sales. 100k at this time of year is exceptional for a debut artist who may or may not turn out to be a one-hit wonder.

I don't even live in the U.S. but I bought it with my American iTunes account so I could get it three days earlier because it comes out on January 8 where I live. I could not resist another 3 days wait. Well, at least I can say I contributed to the Billboard 200 sales.

I love how some of these Idols suddenly start getting equated with "unknowns" once they get booted to Indie status- McPhee was the runner-up on the most watched season of Idol ever and it's just bullcrap to make excuses like that for her. If radio did not give her or Blake a chance, it's because they poured out crap like "Break Anotha" and "Open Toes."

The update tomorrow should give a better indication of the #1 race- though the weekend could turn things around for one of them (possibly Boyle, as her audience probably shops on the weekend).

Kat is starting over without the initial sales cushion Idol provides it's contestants the first year and her sales reflect that. This is the dilemma most contestants face. Idol offers people a short term bubble in which to make an impact in the music industry but it comes with an expiration date. Viewers who swear alliegance forever move on to the new flavor of the moment. Outside of her name, she really is no different then any other new artist now. It's the curse and blessing of the show. Higher name recognition but without the fanbase to compliment unless you are one of the precious few who find your medium early and have repeated success within it.

I'm not making excuses or even extending sympathy. It's just the way it is with a show like that. I am mildly interested as to whether she can transition into a successful AC artist but even if she can it won't be overnnight.

IMO, there is.

Kris, Adam and Allison wouldn't have sold even what they have to date if not from exposure on the show and the advantage they have received specifically promo.

It's not as large as it used to be but it's still there. Look at Keisha. Brand new artist with a #1 single and will sale marginally better then Kris' debut week and not as well as Adam's. Most of those initial sales were from Idol fans. Kris *may* have had some small crossover off his single but the others wouldn't have.

But no....at least for this year it's not as high as it used to be. Whether that indicates a trend I don't know. Season 7 did better then season 6 in their initial sales so the coming season should probably settle the issue.

Please let her be a one-hit wonder. Animal is one of the worst albums I've heard in a long time. Trite, derivative, and juvenile. The album blends into one long, mediocre dance song with lyrics so dumbed-down I wouldn't be surprised if she were drunk or hung over while writing them.

Well said. Kat is starting fresh again. She has changed her style/genre finally to what she seems most comfortable in and does best IMO. A more credible, adult sounding, organic Pop that hopefully she can continue to grow in and develop her skills as both writer and performer. Would I like her to have sold more like Kesha? Absolutely, but ultimately what she has done is become something real that hopefully will be around for a while. I'm not so sure Kesha can say the same thing.

Personally I love Kat's CD. I think it is one of the best CD's any Idol alum has put out. It shows more growth than most and shows her talent, not the formula that is the shows success. Verve seems very committed to growing their artists and have a great deal of confidence in her long range success. We all know Kesha will be thrown away by her label as soon as her 15 minutes are up.

Katharine's numbers may be low. But weren't Taylor Hicks' numbers even lower? Therefore, they're (relatively) not THAT bad. It's what you'd expect from an idol flop. I wonder what Fantasia's opening week will be for her next album!

I kind of hope it's dying. Last year was so boring (despite what revisionist bloggers say now). Ultimately, I feel bad for the artists coming out of Idol because, while they do get a "big break," they have to live up to unrealistic expectations that aren't placed on 99% of other artists. TV show success doesn't equal music business success. The Idol hype benefiting sales only lasts a few months after the album is released, and the Idol hype doesn't really affect radio airplay--radio plays what it wants, and the contestants' labels and radio programmers are the only entities that have any control over that.

Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry are the outliers. They're not representative of how Idol artists should perform. So thinking that people coming from Idol should be smashing it up is really quite illogical. Kelly didn't even reach her superstar status until she broke off from 19M and released her second album. Carrie is in a very welcoming, inclusive, genre, and Daughtry had the benefit of losing Idol, making his initial acceptance into mainstream a story of injustice rectified. Jennifer Hudson didn't do much of anything until a few years after she was on the show.

So if somebody like Kat, an indie artist, sells 15K, it shouldn't be dismissed as a failure just because she appeared on Idol. She should only be compared with other indie AC artists. Idol got her a first record deal, and the name recognition to form an allegiance with her indie label, but that's really it.
