She was lucky that she had "Hard" or else she'd be the newest resident to Fantasy Ride herself into Flop City. She could never be there. Rude Boy alone saved the era. Without Hard, I doubt Rude Boy would've seen a release or been effective.

I feel like she gained a lot of respect from critics this era. Even RR had some stellar reviews, some about her improved singing.

Funny thing is alot of her fans wanted "Photographs" and "Stupid In Love" to be singles. I remember most fans wanting "Te Amo" or "Firebomb". I was so disappointed when she went on American Idol and started singing Rockstar ![:-x](http://images.proboards.com/lipsrsealed.gif) I was sure she would've chosen Te Amo me too. I mean its American Idol RiRi.. give us Te Amo or even Stupid In Love. I was expecting a new ballad. Also the singles are all wrong. The only ones that were right was Rude Boy and Hard and Rude Boy should have been the second single and we shouldve gotten hard now. It sounds like it could rival these songs on radio now. Oh how Im upset with Def Jam

No dark songsshes going back to Mrs mainstream status. I hope she give us more Island Fever with this new album. get back to her roots because the Caribbean is a big supporter of her. Pop songs with caribbean themes like Rude Boy.

I kinda miss the AGLM Rihanna, except for the vocals. She can keep that. Is it bad that I kinda relished in Rockstar being the single?

Rockstar seemed a little dated, sometimes u may not get the sells u want, but in turn u get the respect which is also big. Alot of critics applauded this effort, not that they always matter, but this is a really good album, just caught alot of her mainstream fans by storm because of it's darkness.

So where did this single peak ? RudeBoy was a huge hit single for her, but it did barely anything for her album.

^It is. It was always just an album filler for me. It and G4L are just not worthy of being singles. Also Stupid In Love and The Las Song..good songs but are not singles. The other 8 however ..can work as singles just depends on when they are released.

Plus I think the bonus track with JT is totally totally hot. Why is that a bonus track idk. It couldve definitely taken G4l spot on the album.

I really enjoy "Rockstar" but I believe it was the wrong choice for a single. "Photographs" should have been released right after "Rude Boy" peaked. The song is perfect for radio and having will.i.am on the song doesn't hurt it. In fact, I still think it could be released as a single (soon!) and do well.

I really hope she records more pop songs for her next album. I don't like this one, Russian Roulette is the only good song on it.

This is the first Rihanna album I've liked, and I actually love it. I think it's amazing, second only to TFM as the best pop album in the last year, for me. I'm not sure if I'll buy her next album if it's back to GGGB stuff--I may just go back to buying the singles.

I think Rated R - although way too dark for Rihanna - was important. A lot of people believed that she didn't have any control over/input in her career and this album was made to show that she does. Whether that's true - who knows? But, the critics believed it. It gave her a bit more credibility. The singles also broadened her urban appeal - which is important for future singles.
But, I think I understand the reasoning behind sending Rockstar out... I think after Rude Boy hit, Def Jam didn't want to go back into "dark relationship" territory which is why the (obvious) singles of Firebomb and Photographs will stay album tracks. Dark is not Rihanna and everyone was over it by that point.
Te Amo and Rockstar were the best (only) choices. And, I think they believed neither one would really do anything, which is why they didn't really support them. It was more about getting a few more album sales.
From what I gather, the next album will be an attack (commercial-wise). For a black artist, Rihanna is pretty rare. She doesn't have to make sure she has R&B tracks like Beyonce, so that she's not accused of "selling out." She can fully go after Lady Gaga's lane one single and the next do a song with Rick Ross and it will totally seem natural for her.
That's amazing. But, it probably also explains why her fanbase is so fragmented and not as strong as it could be (re: tour sales). They haven't figured out how to make the variety work for her... yet.

Fire Bomb and Photographs were definitely 2 hits that will never be. But I do understand the reasoning behind not wanting to paint her in this eternally dark, depressed corner. I, too, am glad the next album will be lighter and happier as far as content and sound go but I also appreciate RR for what it is and what Rihanna needed to accomplish with it. Her versatility makes up for her lacking vocal prowess in my book.

Its not dark and has that party vibe.

I maintain that Rated R is Rih's Velvet Rope. TVR was a deeply personal album from Janet that wasn't as commercially viable as her previous efforts but was well received by fans and critics. The very next album from Janet (All For You) was right back to her pop/r&b sound and yielded the 2nd most successful single of her career. So I cannot wait to see how this next "lighter" era for Rih will turn out. IMO this will be an important era because Rih has turned off a lot of people with her dark/promiscious image. People were used to the pop island sweetheart. Not that she should play the part of sweetheart anymore considering she's a grown ass woman now, but just something a little more accessible for the general public.
I still don't see why they haven't released Te Amo to radio in the U.S. though. It didn't SMASH internationally but it did go top 20 in several countries and even reached the top 10 in two countries. Plus the video is already out. Maybe after LTWYL is done smashing?

Hopefully she can give me either FireBomb or Cold Case Love in september. These are the only two songs that can truly close the era imo

So many wasted hits on the album: Te Amo, Photographs, Fire Bomb, even Roxtar could become a hit if it was sent to the right formats.

I hate to keep harping, but Fire Bomb should be remixed (not the Chew Fu mix) and sent to the clubs. It would be appreciated on a dance floor! (and give her another easy #1)
