That said, it seems pointless to pay for album certifications just to be able to drop more money on a plaque when we're in a recession and the music industry has been declining for years. $350 might not be much for a label, but that money is spent just to spend some more money on a plaque - anyone who wants to know how the album has done can check for themselves. I doubt Kelly needs a plaque on her wall to boost her ego.

MLWSWY sold decently, but there's no denying the project as a whole hasn't exactly had stellar sales. In spite of three Top ten singles, two of which were very big hits, the album is still struggling to hit a milli, and combined digital sales haven't hit 4m. It also hasn't sold all that much internationally last I checked.

I'm not surprised All I Ever Wanted is struggling to sell one million units; the era lost all momentum when the second single was released and failed with audiences. An album can typically only come back so much when something like that happens and while Already Gone was a decent-sized hit, it was no monster (which is what would have been needed to turn this era around).

It's not like "I Do Not Hook Up" was a flop- it hit #20 on the Hot 100, no? That's not bad for a second single- and then "Already Gone" did a little better (and has had more longevity), which is good.

No matter how well one does at radio, album sales potential will be limited. Not everyone can sell in Taylor Swift/Susan Boyle levels, after all.

I Do Not Hook Up underperformed where it mattered most: with the buying public. The digital sales of the single were horrible and helped diminish the momentum for the era (as clearly people weren't feeling it). Even on radio, the song peaked and then fell really quickly.

Why are you so cocky in your statement and yet you do not know that it is shipments that make the certification. Selling 819k of an album would make anyone believe that at least 191k albums are in store across the U.S.

I definitely think that Kelly learned a harsh lesson in the music industry. It's good to have a hit like Breakaway but you have to build on that and not go too extreme...it will confuse people and she lost a base that was almost past the "who's hot at the moment" level. I still love her, though.

Well, Sober wasn't a top 10 hit on Pop, so nobody really expected it to do any kind of numbers on the digital chart. Instead, IDNHU did good at radio, yet it still had very bad sales.

Nah, you're totally wrong on that. If an album is selling 3,000 units a week, which AIEW is, you're not going to have more, logically, than around 24,000 copies in stores. Why that number? 24,000 is 8 times 3,000, thus 2 months of inventory at the current sales rate. If you doubt me, find any big box retailer that carries more than 2 months of inventory (most carry less) of anything with just-in-time delivery. If a story has two copies of AIEW and both sell the same day, more will show up on the next delivery truck from the warehouse. There is absolutely no need to stock ((1,000 - 819 = 181) (181/3) 60 weeks of inventory of an album. For AIEW to be platinum, you have to assume that stores are carrying enough copies of the album to meet demand through March of 2011 -- a dumb proposition.

Thanks for posting the chart. Mimi's album is ranked two spots lower on this list, whereas there's just a one-position difference for albums ranked from 51-108 (and thereafter) on the Billboard 200.

wolfj, what you talkin' about? :) "Never Again" hit #8 on the strength of digital sales; "Sober" was the second single, so of course there was a digital chart.
