Well, "U2-esque" sounds pretty appealing, if he can deliver that. He's a fantastic vocal talent.
Cook's first album was like Kelly's in the sense that there's some good stuff there, but too much in the same vein and he needs to step up his game the way she did with the second album to have a real career.
Like Kings of Leon, Nickelback and Daughtry, Cook's long term future is probably as a Hot AC artist who breaks through occasionally on Pop (yes, I know Nickelback's had a ton of big Pop hits, but the Pop radio world has changed a lot since 2007). All of them could be well-positioned if rock ever makes a comeback on Pop, but he's still got an uphill battle to hold onto a fan base.

All of them could be well-positioned if rock ever makes a comeback on Pop, but he's still got an uphill battle to hold onto a fan base. I pretty much agree with this. If you look at all the other radio-friendly acts that fall somewhere on the rock spectrum you are looking at regular airplay on Alternative, Mainstream Rock, Active Rock, HAC and/or AAA. A good pop run for these guys is to get one song past 15 and a follow up in the 20/30s. They sell a good bit of albums - 250,000 and up seems to be normal - and they do a lot of profitable touring. That is success for that type of act. I think Cookie probably has to sell at least Gold but other than that success for him will be something along those lines. He's not likely to get anywhere near rock radio so HAC with some pop is his path to landing another RCA funded album IMO. And I agree that maintaining/expanding his fanbase this time around is key. It will all be a challenge but it is within reach I think. but it seems like he's been "between albums" for a VERY long time, and that's because he hasn't had a real TV or radio presence in over a year. It seems like most of his real promo stopped after December 08/January 09. To many people, he's completely fallen off the radar, which is why it's seemed so quiet. I agree that is the case on a pop/mainstream level - though I would argue he had good bit of TV exposure lasting through the fall, and some stuff this winter - but none of it revolved around a high charting pop song, and that is what would make the biggest impression. Still, he has had a high profile in the HAC/VH1 world that is likely to act as his base for the upcoming project. He wasn't the off radio there until October/November or so. The challenge will be getting back on pop radio.

Sunpeach, is this the kind of thing you were talking about when you said you wanted to see this thread updated more often? David tweeted this today:
Couple more days of writing in Nashville. Today and tomorrow with @zacmaloy and @nealfingtiemann. I believe a "huzzah!" may be in order.
So Neal Tiemann is his lead guitarist, the one he wrote Kiss On the Neck with. They also wrote a songs called Andyone together pre-idol. Very dark broody heavier rock song.
Zac Maloy ya'll should know already. Formerly of The Nixons, co wrote Come Back To Me and Lie on Cookie's last album. Wrote some tracks for Burn Halo's latest with Neal.
Cookie has been in Nashvile for a few days, wrote with Zac and someone else a couple of days ago, I can dig up the info if you want. Why don't I dig it up now? Because I am lazy. Yup.

Looks like things are moving along. His segment was good on 'Idol Gives Back'- he never put back on the weight after he lost it during the Idol run, which isn't easy, he looks good

Enjoyed him on IGB; fingers crossed that 19/RCA properly promote his sophomore effort and help to correct the mistakes they made with his debut. Perhaps I am a tad jaded on 19/RCA as a Daughtry fan who has been disheartened by the lack of support their sophomore album has received in spite of the fact that the debut sold 5mil.

I more than enjoyed him. I'm a bonafide fan now (was just really a casual listener before). Such a great guy, and a strong talent. Looking forward to his new music.

It sounds like Cook and RCA have given up all attempt at a "rock" album and have gone straight up Pop with Cook by using Dr. Luke, David Hodges, and Ryan Tedder.
I never bought the whole "rock" thing with Cook, and was utterly baffled as to why RCA submitted him in every Rock category for the Grammy's, and no Pop categories, when clearly, he is NOT a rock singer. Having a bit of grit to your voice and strumming a guitar does not a rock singer make. He's a Pop singer. It'll be interesting to see how well this album is received by his fans who envision Cook as a rock singer and not a male Pop singer.

Well, I don't consider Cook a rock singer, but I did fully enjoy his debut album. I was worried about the Ryan Tedder collaboration, but I sat down and thought about it, and I actually like Sleepwalker and Already Gone. So, no doubt I will like the song he does with Cookie. I just want his new album already, and for him to grace the tv and YouTube with his new music videos.

It's amazing how Idol and RCA crafted or tried to craft this rocker image of him, when many people never saw him as that. It's all so strange, the plethora of these straight ahead pop people working with him. It's ironic that Carly Smithson turned out to be the 'real' rocker to come out of this season. She and her new band have a lot of work still to do, sales and radio play have a ways to go, but she has remained true to her leanings and vision. I hope his label doesn't take him too far in the pop direction.

Ohhh, I'm actually really looking forward to this Tedder collab! I can tell you already what it will sound like ;) well, unless Tedder finally went out and got himself a new drum machine.

I think Cook being taken seriously as "rock" went out the door as soon as he did those Sketcher ads. I think it definitely softened his persona a bit. I'm happy with him singing anything, as long as the songs are good. His voice is just awesome.

David posted a vlog yesterday and he's going to get in studio next month and the album's producer is Matt Serletic (he has produced Matcjbox Twenty's albums).
That's all he said. I think it's possible that a single will be released in September/October and maybe the album is out in November/December?

The single might be a little earlier... I could see around August maybe. This guy has most of his credits with people like Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas, Ed McCain, Collective Soul, etc. So can we all put to rest the "DAVID COOK IS MAKING A POP ALBUM!!!!!!!!" Thing now? LOL. As the writing credits so far suggest, he's making the same album as last time. They have put him with a few pop types likely to fish around for a pop crossover single or two. But he's doing another HAC type album. Big surprise.

I would not mind a pop album- that would be good- as long as it's not so damn depressing! But it still needs some depth, his voice is too expressive to be wasted on what some consider pop these days. But he has been so off the radar, that is troubling, you can't just disappear and come back and expect people to still be interested like they were. Big stars can do that, but he is not a big star.

^^^^^ Ditto. The whole under the radar or off the radar thing is extremely troubling. He didn't have a whole helluva lot of label support to begin with and, considering he hasn't been touring for 7 months and hasn't released a single in over a year, I am having a hard time figuring out what the hell is taking so damn long. Either they have something surprisingly awesome up their sleeves ( a la the silence from Clarkson between Thankful and Breakaway) or this is how they get rid of him (a la the silence between Aiken's first and second albums). Hope it's the former.

I wouldn't call this thread that 'active.' In fact, it's a bit worrisome it's so abandoned. Archie's thread moves much more and Cook might be on par with Blake Lewis, and that's not great encouragement.

Hey, y'all. I had no idea that there was such an active thread on DC back in this section. Nice. We should get more people to come back when the record drops. Right now it seems to be a mix of casual commenters and baiting. LOL. I tend not to bother. But if you came back I'd post more!

Hey, tinawina! A lot of Cook fans never really posted here, so I kind of expected that there might not actually even be a thread specifically for the second album.

I loved Cook's first album and I am super exicted for the second to be released. That Ryan collab sounds interesting and I bet it will sound great (hopefully) I agree that David is clearly not a Rock artist. If anything he is Pop/Rock. I can see him get a large following on Ac and Hot AC but Top 40 seems risky at this point. Hopefully he has a killer first single to get the ball rolling...

When is this supposed to be released again? This fall is very Idol-heavy. Kelly, Cook, Lee, Crystal, Archie and maybe Carrie (Christmas album) are all being released this fall.

I agree that David is clearly not a Rock artist. If anything he is Pop/Rock. I think he is a rock artist in the sense that he headed up a rock band for 10 years and put out 8,00 CDs with that band, then joined another rock band and put out a solo rock album. So unlike others here, I don't think Idol really made that part up. LOL. (No offense y'all, not mad at you for your opinion). But I DO agree that he's better suited for the pop/rock thing. I'd very much like to see a poppier side of rock vibe going forward. Like an updated version of Jon Bon Jovi (and no I am not saying he will achieve that level of mega success. I am just saying I like that vibe for him). **waves to Folk**
