Sure you can watch whatever video you want on the net....
Then what is the point of radio, when you can listen to any song on demand on the internet? And yet as we know, radio audiences are still in the hundreds of millions a week!

Maybe that's because you can listen to the radio while driving, working or the like. I don't really think many people sit in their rooms and listen to the radio exclusively. I guess many people who want to listen to the radio do not want to hear a particular song, they just want music on the background. If they do want a particular song they'll probably turn their ipods on you watch it on youtube.

MTV has officially gone to the dogs!
I can't believe that MTV is being biased by ditching all the music and instead showing reality tv crap!
Absolutely disgraceful!! >:(
What was MTV thinking ?!? ???

^ I'm glad everyone seems to agree. It's still not a disappointment, we all saw this coming. Just waiting for the channel to embrace their state of crap.

It was about time. You can't really fault MTV for no longer showing videos; there demand for Music Television is evaporating thanks to the internet.

I was going to praise them for finally admitting what the station is, but until they strip the "M" I can't do that. Unless it no longer stands for "music" but if not what does it stand for?

MTV can just be initials like a lot of other TV channels and brands that have changed/broadened focus over the years. ESPN is officially just ESPN, AOL stopped standing for America Online years ago and is available in other countries, A&E is less arts and entertainment than CSI: Miami reruns and reality shows, KFC isn't going to be KFBGC because they serve baked and grilled chicken, too, TMZ covers more than the thirty-mile zone that inspired its name, etc.

Unlike the average TV station's call letters, MTV was understood to be the abbreviations for Music Television, just as TNT stood for Turner Network Television. AOL stopped using its full name America Online in 2006 because not only was it understood by many to have originated in America, but they had completely expanded beyond its borders. ESPN was always known simply as ESPN, because not everyone is going to say " Entertainment and Sports Programming Network" over and over again. Nevertheless, unlike Music Tele vision, ESPN is still in the business of televising, to the public, what the initials originally stood for and still stand for today. KFC is still Kentucky Fried Chicken. It started that way, and even though they've introduced new menus along the way since, they have not deviated from its origins. Bottom line: AOL, KFC and ESPN have not abandoned the original intent of their initials. A&E, I must say, is on its way to becoming a crime and psychology network, and may need to change their initials. MTV (specifically MTV1 and 2) has completely abandoned its initials' original intent. Except maybe for MTV Hits and the other MTV channels that still focus heavily on the music, MTV 1 and 2 really need to change their initials in keeping with what they now televise, which is almost no music, and mostly reality.

I still believe the increase of people watching videos on the internet is a bit of a cop out for MTV. Remember, MTV used to be more than just showing music videos. It used to have other great music-related series and shows as well.
I believe there would still be interest in MTV as a music channel if the network would have been more innovative in providing music-related shows. I think it's more probable than not that the suits at the network saw more money in peddling silly reality shows to teens and young adults than restructuring the network to maintain its commitment to music.

And there's the key. Since Viacom feels the need to use the proliferation of music videos on the Web as an excuse not to televise them on MTV1 and 2, why abandon the music-related shows? There used to be multitudes of them; now, only America's Best Dance Crew stands out. The rest have absolutely nothing to do with music.

Ha, I think they are about ten years late on the logo change. I think The Real World marked "the beginning of the end." That, and rather than just playing videos, there would always have to be some kind of theme. Even MTV hits is not just videos anymore. I WILL watch if they just play videos, but when it's BS I change the channel.

The next season won't even be filmed at the Jersey Shore apparently. WTF? What's it gonna be called, MORONS season 2? in other news, The Situation is shopping a book deal, but needs to find a typewriter that types in crayon...

I think its funny how everyone bitches about this but not many people seem to realize that MTV *HAS* been showing music videos during the late night for the past few months now.

They've been relegating music videos to the graveyard shift for years, now under the name AMTV (1 and 2). It's because of the disappearance of music-oriented shows that the complaints are warranted. The sooner they dump America's Best Dance Crew (the only music-oriented show continuously running on MTV1), "MTV" will become a complete farce.
The way this is going, they're just itching for an excuse to ditch Subterranean, Headbanger's Ball and the rock programs from MTV2. That will be the time for them to change the names of both channels.

I find it really sad that MTV has gone this way. I remember when I used to stay up way into the night watching videos. That was back when they played music, though. I also remember when it was the thing for just about every song released to have a video. There were some great ones.

Well, it also plays videos in the morning for a few hours, but, yes, it should not call itself "Music Television" when music is such a small factor in its programming. Oh, wait- music is played in a lot of their reality shows, so maybe it should stay MTV.
