SADE SOLDIERS ON Next Week Will Mark Two Straight Months #1 Album is Over 100k
February 24, 2010
February's almost in the rear-view mirror, but Sade refuses to fade from sight. The Epic diva, whose Soldier of Love debuted with 500k in sales, will spend a third week at #1, thanks to those retailers still brave enough to keep their shelves stocked and their credit card machines oiled. Now if only getting a health care plan passed was that simple.
The mysterious chanteuse's total next week will exceed 100k, meaning the #1 record through the first two months of the new year have all been in six figures.
Hey, we take the good news where we can get it, bub.
American VI: Ain't No Grave, the sixth and final edition of the late Johnny Cash's American Recordings/Lost Highway collaboration with producer Rick Rubin, tops the week's new releases with a projected total of 35-40k. A chilling voice from beyond the grave, it documents the last few months before the music superstar's death in Sept., 2003.
Epitaph's veteran Illinois punk-rockers Alkaline Trio return with their indie label debut, This Addiction, which should debut with a total between 25-30k.
Sony Music Latin performer Chayanne is set for an impressive first-week total between 20-25k, while Island/IDJ's Texas post-emo-rocker Bryce Avery's The Rocket Summer nabs 12-16k for his sophomore effort, Of Men and Angels, the follow-up to his 2007 debut, Do You Feel. Columbia Nashville tout Josh Thompson should bow with around the same total for the Wisconsin-born country singer's debut, Way Out Here.
The market was down 17% vs. last week, down 12% vs. same week last year and now down 7% year to date. And you thought curling was a bore.

HITS are underestimating Johnny Cash. American V sold 88k 4 years ago. American VI should be able to do 50-60k IMO. And its been getting excellent reviews too.

It doesn't matter about the competition. The fact that the album is slated to be #1 three weeks straight with sales over 100k is quite telling.

The fact that most of the biggest releases of the year haven't even been released yet and we're only down 7% vs this time last year bodes really well for the rest of the year. When was the last time we were UP in sales vs the last year?

#1 is #1 no matter what the competition so it is what it is. I'm not a Sade fan. Never heard any of her music.

Between Lady Antebellum and Sade, we could have a group be in the running for top album of the year

When was the last time we were UP in sales vs the last year? Wow I totally *DISAGREE* with you! This time last year Taylor Swift was repeating at #1 every week while only selling 62k: www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/charts/chart_alert/e3i03e9df1ef7d2112bf801391a4a8ba398Sade just sold 500k last week and Lady Antebellum sold a million over the last four weeks, yet the overall market is still down 12% from this same time last year. That tell me the CDs on the lower ends of the charts are not selling much at all. Without Sade and Lady A "inflating" the numbers, the overall market would be down significantly more.

I wouldn't say "albums on the lower end of the chart are selling less" is really accurate at all. In general, the album chart as a whole seems to picking up once again... however, it's because of the PHYSICAL STORES closing more and more and having less and less space for the catalogue albums that made up a decent fraction of the market before, and now we are seeing those numbers shrink even though album sales for the newer releases are higher than they've been in several years. IMO they should just CUT the prices of the older albums, FULL STOP. And think of a way to make them more visible on iTunes as well as promoted. I mean it's unfortunate but most of the public doesn't want to buy an older album in their local music shop for $14.99 when they can either a) download the album illegally b) buy a few songs they like off of it on iTunes or c) buy a NEWER and current album for a fair amount cheaper, or even buy it used. I loved the promotion they've been doing recently at F.Y.E. stores, they're offering EACH AND EVERY ALBUM in their store for only $9.99 or less. I know I'd rather buy a few albums for that value than dish out 15-19$ for one album.

YOUR HANDY-DANDY WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW
This year's streak of #1 albums over 100k will continue through the last chart in February, as Sade books another week at the top. Through the first two months in 2009, only two titles sold over 100k: Bruce Springsteen (224k) and The Fray (179k). Hey, it may not be 1999-esque, but it ain’t chopped liver either, not here in the early 21st century. For the record, the other six weeks last year all belonged to Taylor Swift, who, we should point out, is still rockin' the charts a year later. Here's how the Top 15 shapes up headed into the weekend:
Sade (Epic) 125-130k Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 110-115k Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 50-55k Lady Gaga, The Fame (Interscope) 45-50k * Johnny Cash (American/Lost Highway) 40-45k Lil Wayne (Cash Money/Universal Motown) 35-40k Ke$ha (RCA/RMG) 27-30k * Alkaline Trio (Epitaph) 25-28k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 24-27k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 24-27k Jaheim (Atlantic) 24-27k Susan Boyle (Columbia) 24-27k Alicia Keys (J/RMG) 23-25k Mary J. Blige (Geffen) 23-25k Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster (Interscope) 23-25k
* Denotes debut
You may now return to your curling parties. (/26a)

Many albums will be jockeying for position in the top 10, by the looks of those estimates.

I told you HITS underestimated Johnny Cash in their first predictions for this week. Don't be surprised if he overtakes Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas by the time next week's chart is released.

Its so close between Sade & Lady Antebellum again in the early forecast. The final tally ended up being a 50k difference between the two. I hope it's the same this go round.

It would be pretty badass if Alkaline Trio could pull though. Even though on a strong week this would not be happening.

Fearless is looking to have its lowest selling week ever. I agree with those saying that Johnny Cash is being underestimated. BEP still tearing it up! Have sales of "The END" surpassed Bocelli's Christmas to become the #2 album released in 2009 yet?
