LUDACRIS WINS THE BATTLE DTP/Def Jam/IDJ Rap Star Will Debut at #1 with 120k, Lady Antebellum, Gorillaz, Hendrix Could Top 100k
March 10, 2010
Ludacris seems to be everywhere these days, and next week, he’ll be atop the HITS’ Album Sales Chart.
Riding high on hit collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber and labelmate Taio Cruz, the DTP/Def Jam/IDJ hip-hop-turned-acting superstar will debut at #1, with approximately 120k in sales for his latest, Battle of the Sexes. The album boasts current hit singles “How Low” and “My Chick Bad,” featuring Minaj. His seventh studio album also features cameos from Shawna, Lil Scrappy, Trey Songz, Lil’ Kim, Gucci Mane, Monica and Ne-Yo, among others.
This week’s chart-topper, Lady Antebellum will battle it out with two newcomers for the next three positions, all in the six-figure range. Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach comes out on Virgin amidst all the turmoil at parent company EMI, with rave reviews and a very impressive first-week total between 90-100k, the same range as Experience Hendrix/Legacy’s Jimi Hendrix album Valleys of Neptune, previously unreleased tracks recorded mostly during the years ’69-’70 just before his death in Sept. 1970, while transitioning from his old Experience to Band of Gypsies, his new group featuring bassist Billy Cox.
Sony's catalog division released the rest of the guitar god's studio recordings this week as well in expanded CD + DVD format, including Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland and the posthumous First Rays of the New Rising Sun.
MCA Nashville’s Gary Allan is on target for between 55-60k, while Columbia’s Broken Bells, the impressive new pairing of The Shins’ James Mercer and Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton, should do in the 35-40k range.
The market was up 5% vs. last week, down 11% vs. same week last year and down 8% year to date. But who cares when Howard Stern is hosting the Tiger Woods Mistress Beauty Pageant?

Very good numbers for both Gorillaz & Broken Bells. (The Shins/Gnarls Barkley fans weren't going to pass THAT by!)

So I assume Sade will land somewhere in the 65-75k range for #5. I hope I'm right. If I'm wrong, then I hope it's more.
I knew Luda would open up with those numbers, which isn't that impressive but still solid that he was able to land another #1 album.

100k again for LA would be the 7 weeks above that number.
Very impressive for this day and age outside holiday season.

That's A Disappointment, The Project Was Well Organized. Performed "How Low" On BET Awards, Released It Officially At The End Of November, Became A Platinum Single, Top 10 On Billboard Hot 100, Released Another Single In The Beginning Of February With Lil Kim & Along With Another Single Featuring Nikki Minaj, And The Album Only Leaked 3 Days Before The Official Release Date....

I'd say that's pretty damn good for Luda. What did he expect? I think it's quite obvious that the second week drop is going to be epic.

I'm hoping the total sales for Ludacris are down and Gorillaz are up, so Gorillaz can get #1. Anyways I think those numbers are kinda low for luda.

Yeah those numbers were kind of expected for Luda, but it's still terrible, considering his previous albums' first weeks.

Ludacris sales are underwhelming but expected! Like Mariah, he waited 5 months to release the damn album to stores...for no reason! Only push back your CD if your single flops, NOT #1 on Rhythmic like Mimi and Luda.
I'm happy his sales are low. It will FINALLY teach Def Jam a lesson. Release CDs 6 weeks from the 1st single NOT 6 months!

I'm just not a big fan of rap anymore outside of Eminem, D12, and Dr. Dre. This new ludacris album does nothing for me. His first two albums were really good "Back for the first time" and "Word of Mouf". "Chicken and Beer." was ok.
It's a shame. Those first two albums were hot.

Is rap joining heavy metal in the "we never thought it would die but it did" category? killarenzo get off ma dick n***a....grown ass man follows another dude ? what kind of homosexualism is that ?,,,,,,,,smfh No, it's the lesbians that hook up once and then stalk each other for years. Gay guys just wanna blo & go. So technically, you and killarenzo are engaging in lesbianism. My friend Nelson thinks it is easier to be a sexy lesbian than a sexy gay man. Sexy lesbians turn everyone on, but sexy gay men make straight men uncomfortable if they are insecure about their own sexuality and suspicious they are secretly gay.

Is rap joining heavy metal in the "we never thought it would die but it did" category? Metal will not die and neither will rap. The popularity of genres go in cycles. Its just that rap's has last much longer than anyone thought. It may not be as big as it once was but it will never go away completely.

I think the GaGa and Sade numbers are a bit low for this week's estimate. They may end up selling a bit more.

She's out of the top but not done haha. I say she'll sell between 20-25, which is pretty awesome for an album that's 16 months old and has sold 5,66 million copies.

Great debut for Broken Bells! Hope they remain top 10. And Gorillaz are doing well considering the lead single that didn't catch on as well as "Feel Good Inc." (which was also a slow burner)

Gary Allan is not a debut? That can't be true, right? Gary is a debut; Hits must have made an error. I think his sales are quite good, considering his lead single underperformed and the second single hasn't taken off yet.
