The format of 2010-11 was perfect - the s**tty Mainstream hits like "Porn Star Dancing" and "Love-Hate-Sex-Pain" would chart in the low 20s, while bands like Anberlin and Jimmy Eat World would rack up top tens, so would the folk and indie bands, like Mumford and Civil Twilight, along with their classic artists like Linkin Park.

That format was great.

I agree that 2010-2011 was pretty good, but I'd say between 2004 and 2009 was probably the best years for Alternative. You could pretty much hear all that rock music had to offer back in those years, which included anything from indie rock to metal-leaning songs. That was true variety in my opinion. It was around mid 2012 that Alternative really started to go downhill, with indie pop pretty much taking over the format and the heavier acts and core artists being relegated to the lower half of the chart. As of now, I think Alternative has gone pretty low, with even Linkin Park and Chevelle struggling to do well. And I remember you saying that the ratio of new artists to established artists is too high, and I completely agree with that as well. I'll bet even bands like Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers will falter with their next releases because Alternative now thinks indie pop is what is "alternative", as sad as that is.

And yeah, "Battle Born" should have charted on Alternative. That was one of the strongest singles FFDP released recently, and it's a damn shame that Alternative overlooked it like it does for pretty much anything on the Active chart. I don't see how Active will chart Alternative songs, but Alternative will ignore Active songs. I'm sure there are still people in the Alternative audience who like heavier songs.

I'm not advocating it or saying that I like the change necessarily, but the reason why indie rock is charting on active right now and active is not doing hardly anything on alternative is because new rock music simply isn't that popular right now. Alternative radio stations realized that playing lots of new songs by fun., Grouplove, Imagine Dragons, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys, etc. revitalized their listenership and relevance. Active rock, by virtue of trending in the same direction, is probably also seeing a ratings increase. You can hate people's taste all you want, but the fact is that heavy rock music is seen as a sort of dinosaur genre, especially in America. People still like some of the old stuff for nostalgic purposes, but until something novel and fresh comes along with a heavy rock vibe and this more mellow/upbeat stuff has grown stale (which anything will when we're overexposed to it), the heavy rock bands you like aren't going to have a chance to do any damage outside of the hard rock niche. There's a reason why it's been several years since the last active rock pop crossover, but we're getting alternative crossovers to pop all the time.

This is true. It may be a bad time to be an old band. With a turnover in sound, people want new music from the hot new artists. Some bands are immune to that I guess, but I don't think it's just radio. People don't seem that into The Killers, The Strokes, and Franz Ferdinand anymore. And had MGMT come back with singles that were anything like "Kids", "Electric Feel", and "Time To Pretend", they'd probably still be doing plenty well right now.

The biggest shocker to me is the way that Kings Of Leon have fallen off since breaking out on Only By The Night.

I was surprised "Porno" didn't do that well after "Radioactive" went #1, and because of that, "Supersoaker" failed to reach the top five, causing "Temple" and "Wait For Me" to do poorly. They may never have an Alt hit again.

A band I'm worried about for their Alt future is Rise Against.

There's a huge gap between Wait For Me and I Wanna Get Better, not sure if it can close it

About ten years ago, Nicholas2.0 made a huge post about how shitty the Alternative charts were back then. After seeing it, I've decided to make my own rant because well, I need to vent without pissing people off. (Link to the original post - pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/13004/thread).

Come With Me Now seems like an inferior version of Heavy Bells, which could have done more than it did. The accordion is unique, but I don't see how this vaulted up so quickly.

I hated The Walker at first - the vocals were annoying, plus it changed way too often, but after Pop jumped on it, I kinda like it now. Not deserving of a #1 whatsoever though.

Fever is the worst Black Keys song I have heard to date. It's bland as hell. Maybe this will pull a Coming of Age and stall in the top three.

Bad Blood is a great song, I wouldn't mind seeing it at #1.

Do I Wanna Know is old as fuck. 34 weeks already, goddamn it. Drop fast or it will suffer the 52-week fate.

Fall in Love is one of the most boring songs I've heard in recent memory. #3 peak? More like #33.

Magic burnt out on me fast. This can freefall now.

Come a Little Closer needs to get the fuck out already. 38 weeks? That's insane. Back Against the Wall topped the chart in week 30, and it fell off 3 weeks later.

I Wanna Get Better is decent, top 5 is all I wish.

Giants sounds like a Blink-182 song. The problem is, it's not Blink-182. That said, I still like it.

Wait For Me is boring. Even more so than the first two lyrics. The line "something to blow" is rather funny, though.

Pompeii needs to leave. Now. 44 weeks, but it's losing only 30 spins a week. Trajectory is 51 weeks if it continues its snail pace.

Why'd You Only Call Me is decent. Top 5, I predict, and I won't be mad.

Team is going recurrent next week, I hope.

Afraid is going recurrent next week, I hope.

Sleeping With a Friend flopped. I'm glad.

Glory and Gore is stalling. Please burn out fast.

Thunder Clatter sounds like an AAA reject. Philip Phillips to be exact.

Best Day of My Life is a pop song that debuted first on pop and crossed over to Alt. That is bad. Plus it's an Imagine ripoff anyway.

Take It or Leave It is inferior to CALC. I don't know what to think about it.

Dangerous sounds like a pop song. 

Guilty All the Same should be in the top 5 by now, a Linkin Park lead single flopping this badly is unacceptable. It's the format's biggest core act now, it should immediately ascend to the top.

Doses and Mimosas is fucking awful. Fuck the lyrics, fuck the beat, fuck the whole song. It's a fucking electro song! Fuck it all and fucking no regrets.

Lazaretto is great. Jack White should easily get himself a top ten.

Who Needs You reminds me of The Strokes. I like The Strokes. Top ten please.

Take Out the Gunman is flopping too. Chevelle, hello? They used to rack up continous top tens. It should ascend to the top fast!

Cardiac Arrest is a great indie pop song that got screwed too early. Reminds me of a Bastille + Smallpools mix.

Coming of Age is horrendously boring.
