I'm still shocked "Recover" never debuted on Billboard.

So I've never been completely clear on this, are the Billboard genre charts (like that Alternative one) the same as the Hot 100 or do they just count radio? Do they incorporate sales and streaming or are they just Billboard's measure of the radio charts?

whoops good point didn't even think about that. for some reason I thought they would just track "Alternative" sales and streaming, which makes absolutely no sense now that I think again

That's what the Rock Songs chart is for. It takes sales and overall airplay into account.

I think Alt Rock needs a new number one song. "Fever" is good, but 8 weeks is good enough. I can't beleive "Bad Blood" didn't knock it off the top spot.

I'm confused as to why Active songs aren't doing as well as Alt songs on the overall Rock Airplay.

if you mean the songs on "Active" Rock charts; my guess would be the Alt ones are more radio friendly, but I agree, by defination alone "rock" would mean more guitar oriented music. The harder stuff should dominate that chart. That's the whole reason Alt charts were born during the 80s. To showcase the more synth /new wave/Pop sound of Rock, but even since then you could see how that style was slowly overcomming the rock charts. Now adays its overflow.

I thought it was based off total airplay. Nope. The Alt songs tend to chart a lot higher than the Active songs because 1) Alt charters have higher AI than Active charters when you compare positions side-by-side (ex: "Fever" has 12.948 million AI on Alt, while "Words As Weapons" only has 5.808 million AI on Active) and 2) Alt and AAA have a lot of overlap, which strengthens those particular songs' overall AI.

Even if you took away all of the Active and AAA audience figures from Fever and any other songs getting support from all of them, Fever's still #1. Active's audience numbers continue their downward spiral, and it's strange considering you'd think they'd go up from people like yourself who dislike the current state of Alternative. Today's active rock music has just declined so much I guess that the traditional rock listeners would probably just prefer to listen to their local classic rock stations or XM/Sirius golds or decade-specific stations.

I can see what you're getting at, I hate 75% of the chart today but that's still surprising.

Jack White- "Lazaretto" has been #9 forever. That song has a really great 70 Psychedelia vibe to it. That's the song that should be number 1. That or "Take It Or Leave It". Not that Bleachers song; which looks prepped for the top spot.

I don't know the Active chart well enough to grade everything. I've probably heard each song once, but not much more than that for quite a few of them.

@ Black gives way to green baron
judging from those grades I gather you are not a fan of The indie poppier sound of alt rock. though I am surprised at the B+ you gave Lorde? and the D+ you gave Godsmack?

@ Black gives way to green baron judging from those grades I gather you are not a fan of The indie poppier sound of alt rock. though I am surprised at the B+ you gave Lorde? and the D+ you gave Godsmack? About Lorde: I judge based on quality, not how alternative it is. If we were grading how I felt about it on the format, I'd easily F it. But since it's an actual good song, it gets the B and not the D. And about Godsmack: I've never liked them. Being on Active is not an excuse to suck, which I need to tell 75% of the chart. It's better than 3 years ago, where 85% of the Active chart sucked, but it still has a lot of improving to do.

So then, if 85% of the Active Rock used to suck, and since like 85% of the alternative chart used to be active rock songs, then if less than 85% of the current alternative chart sucks, you technically prefer today's alternative to the alternative of old.

Not when Alt used to get the best of the Active crop.
