Hehe well then you should youtube the video for Iwrestledabearonce - "Tastes Like Kevon Bacon" and prepare to have your life changed by just how hilarious it is. Just as a sneak preview of what you're in for, they have a chick "singer" and their catch phrase/slogan on their merch/t-shirts is "metal just got gay." Enjoy! Here, I'll do it for you: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrFTR9fucr8 And watch the whole thing because even if you don't like the beginning, there may be more in store for you that you will dig.

I don't know what kinda non-metalcore, metal bands could make it, though. Do you have any ideas? Soilwork for one. "Exile" went top 50 on active but should have done better, and others of their songs such as "Stabbing The Drama" and "Nerve" should have gone top 50 on active. I wish Lacuna Coil did better on active even though they manage to reach the lower region of the chart. Underoath no longer sounds post hardcore/metalcore and some of their newer songs deserve a shot. In Flames, Mushroomhead, and Machinehead could make it with the right songs as well. And of course Rammstein deserves another shot at active. :) Some interesting shouts there. I shall go through each one. I expected Soilwork to push their next lead single after "Exile", but they didn't bother at all with "Deliverance Is Mine", so I don't see them making it any time soon. Lacuna Coil should hopefully get a top 20 with their next lead single, given it's radio friendly enough. Not sure about Underoath. They're newest stuff isn't really melodic enough. That's probably due to the fact that they've lost Aaron Gillespie, who did the immaculately good clean vocals. I can't ever see In Flames making it on Active. Mushroomhead have had their day, I think. I wasn't diggin' their latest release. Machine Head would have to release something much softer to stand a chance. And unfortunately, the language barrier is always going to prevent Rammstein from doing anything. I would like to see them get a hit, though. As, for Prog, you're obviously gonna mention Fair to Midland & Porcupine Tree They would definitely spice things up a bit. There's not really any real 'different' bands threatening to make it on Active. Obviously. :) Add Karnivool in there as well. Dream Theater had success back in the day, and if they ever release good material again, they would make sense as well. Katatonia would be perfect. They basically sound like a slightly doomier more depressing version of a lot of active rock, but songs like "My Twin" and "Forsaker" sound basically like Swedish alt-metal with a prog twist. If "Forsaker" had been pushed, I think it could have gone top 50. Textures and Periphery are probably too much of a stretch, but I'd love it if they ever had some success. I also think Dredg is a good fit for alternative, and they're certainly well-respected among bands in the industry, but I wish they would make more of an impression on the mainstream. My dream radio station would also throw some Opeth and some Iwrestledabearonce in there. Karnivool definitely deserve to do better. "All I Know" & "Set Fire to the Hive" sounded perfect for radio to me. A bigger label would probably help. I would throw Dream Theater into the ''past their best'' pool alongside Mushroomhead. I can't see them making an impact again, after not getting airplay for 10+ years. Katatonia is an interesting one. They're possibly a bit too gloomy for radio, but you're right songs such as "My Twin" & "The Longest Year" could have done decently. Those last 4 are probably too heavy. Lamb of God have hit the top 50/40, though I guess. I would throw the likes of CKY, Destrophy, H.I.M., Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, RA & Vision of Disorder into the mix aswell. And hey maybe play some Murderdolls once in awhile too. I'd also like to see the more talented hard rock bands do better, such as Art of Dying & Papercut Massacre.

Psh and My Darkest Days doesn't already do that for every other active rock station? It just polarizes against a very different audience. If we took a poll over whether the average poster on here would prefer to listen to My Darkest Days or Iwrestledabearonce, it'd be pretty close, and my guess is more people would rather listen to IWABO. You'll be disappointed to hear that My Darkest Days have grown on me. Although, I would normally (probably) prefer to listen to Iwrestledabearonce or Every Time I Die, at least.

I guess my main point is that if radio stations are afraid of being too polarizing, then they have to realize that cock rock is polarizing too, just in a different way...and that active rock stations are losing a different part of their audience than they would if they played IWABO.
And some of those bands above had some success. Heck "Do You Call My Name" was a top 10 on active rock back in the day I remember. And Rammstein - "Du Hast" was a top 20 hit, but they've only managed near top 40s at their best since then. I think the Karnivool - Themata album was the most frustrating for me. "Themata" should have cracked the top 40 of active, but I believe it barely only cracked the top 50 three years ago.

I had actually forgotten about "Do You Call My Name", guess that was a complete one-off for them on radio. Infact, I prefer most of their other singles to that one. And yeah, aslong as Saving Abel & Theory of a Deadman are played less.

My ideal Mainstream Rock playlist would be filled with stoner rock and sludge metal
And in 5 years time when Josh Homme's influence is fully manifest I'd throw all the bands on that boat in as well

Yea keep posting contrary to me just to be contrary to me in a near-insulting way in every thread, that's going to get you somewhere
I don't even care if you hate both genres, but could you please just stop doing this every time? It's overkill

Man, you don't need to get upset about it. Just give it right back to him. Go on a tirade about how Linkin Park ruined music forever or that Hurt and Fair To Midland deserve to be the no-names that they are (though that may incur my wrath too). You'll have more fun throwin' it back in his face than getting righteous about it, I promise you.

EDIT: Actually, I went through your posts and I haven't responded to anything you've said in the last two months, so I don't know what you're talking about.

Well obviously it means that we have near opposite taste but it also seems to be something else if it also brings stuff like, "wow, you just earned my undying emnity" and, "(sits in the dark and waits to die)"

Fine, I'll accept that it may not be that much but it's striking when it happens
And I know it happened even before my post about Na Na Na that I mentioned

Pen's a lot more lighthearted than he seems. Just don't take it seriously. He clearly doesn't want you to given his comment, "I'll have more fun if he does that too. Jeez." Josh Homme is a shitty songwriter anyway. Your move, buddy.

You gotta admit though, there is no objective criteria that allows you to get upset when Pen makes a snide comment about the music you like when you dissed Oasis. And you're right that Oasis isn't exactly ORIGINAL, but they are very competent songwriters, and I'd go as far as to say that a handful of their songs are immaculately crafted.

The difference is I didn't quote a post by him and say "lol, you like Oasis". I don't care if someone likes music I don't like, or doesn't like music I like. Also I could not possibly give a shit about when you think I should and shouldn't be upset.

That's fair. I'm just trying to keep the peace around here, and the truth is that this isn't the first time you've expressed that you've felt insulted by something that pretty much everybody else found completely innocuous. You do have the right to get upset about it, but it would also be better for your sake and everyone else's if you didn't. How is it that in my three years on this site the most frustrated I've been is by someone saying that they like "Porn Star Dancing"? Pen has taken plenty of shots at me. He's just being funny. You either brush it off or give him a shot back. It's not like he's personally after you and just likes being contrary to you and you alone. Haven't you been here for the Pen vs. Artie showdowns? There's some classic stuff in the archives if you wanna take a day and look through some old threads. Or Pen vs. Zago? That shit was INTENSE!

I get all that, I totally do. It's just that, there was a time when I really was taking the place of Artie in some people's minds (which I never fully understood), and that still clouds my mind in regards to my interactions here, so I'm not completely established or comfortable yet. When I get "there" I will become looser, and since it's happened at almost every other forum, I'm hopeful.

No. That never happened. Artie is untouchable. Anyone comparing themselves to Artie is delusional about just how legendary they are. But seriously, besides one dispute you had with ONE person, you were never Artie-ified, and in that one dispute it was unclear who was at fault anyway. And in your interactions with others since you've seemed defensive. I promise if you don't get defensive...NO ONE is gonna compare you to Artie and his ability to make up rules here and selectively ignore any posts or details he feels like. Plus, people have to at least be a little nice to you. You're the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart supplier after all. :)

He's just being funny. You either brush it off or give him a shot back. It's not like he's personally after you and just likes being contrary to you and you alone. You hit the nail on the head with that statement. As I'd assume most of you know, I was one of pen's college roommates a few years ago. We'd constantly have many debates about our tastes in music and he completely understands 100% that nobody always has the same opinion as someone else, but those are some of the best times that I remember from our college years. Besides, he has a very wide taste in music and very rarely shuts a band down, and if he does, usually I'll agree that they're a waste of space on the airwaves (such as a lot of the cock rock out there dominating the charts). Sure, debates can sometimes get tense occasionally, but remember that it's all in fun and are not meant to be serious. You just have to know who it's coming from, and while some of his comments may come across as snide, trust me, they're all about sarcasm :)

Active Rock needs more bands ...Red Line Chemistry... So wait, beyond their best Alice in Chains impression ("Dumb Luck"), is there actual merit to Red Line Chemistry not evident previously? Lacuna Coil should hopefully get a top 20 with their next lead single, given it's radio friendly enough. See, at this point I'd go ahead and lump them in your "had their day" category with Mushroomhead and Dream Theater.
