GLEE’S MADONNA POWER LANDS AT #1 Third Columbia Compilation Beats Out AC/DC for Top Spot
April 21, 2010
The combined Power of Glee and Madonna will result in a chart-topping debut for Columbia’s third compilation of songs from Ryan Murphy’s pop zeitgeist show on Fox. With last night’s episode revealing Sue Sylvester’s lifelong obsession with the Material Girl, as well as seven set-pieces incorporating some of her biggest hits, Glee: The Power of Madonna will bow at #1 on next week’s chart with a total of 100-120k.
That’s based on one-day sales reports from retailers around the country who haven’t transformed their stores into Jamba Juice locations. With the album #1 at iTunes, and six of its seven tracks in the Top 100, including “Like a Virgin” at #3, it remains to be seen how physical retail will react in gauging its final total.
Meanwhile, Columbia should nab at least two of the top three spots on next week’s chart, with AC/DC’s Iron Man 2 soundtrack looking for a total between 80-100k.
Atlantic’s Circa Survive, a Philly-based rock band fronted by former Saosin lead vocalist Anthony Green, looks on target for a first-week total of 30-35k for its latest, Blue Sky Noise, its first for a major after a pair of releases on indie Equal Vision Records.
Veteran Atlanta rockers Sevendust, long associated with now-defunct TVT Records, release their latest, Cold Day Memory, the first for their own 7 Bros. Records in conjunction with Asylum, which should also do between 30-35k.
Jimmy Buffett’s latest Mailboat album, Encores, a Walmart exclusive, is also looking in the same 30-35k range.
Longtime L.A. rap stoners Cypress Hill’s Priority/EMI debut, Rise Up, released, appropriately enough on 4/20, is ready to vaporize up 18-22k in first-week sales.
The market was up 3% vs. last week, down 14% vs. same week last year and down 10% year to date. You may now start reprogramming your TiVos, which missed last night’s Glee finale thanks to American Idol running overtime.

Pretty consistent numbers for each volume that's been released thus far.

Great for Glee, and Madonna. Her Celebration album might not get a top 20 placement on the chart, but it should go back to the top 200.
Actually, it's 'Like a Prayer' at #3 on iTunes.

What other "tribute" artist albums have hit the top ten? Or #1?
Madonna's getting an odd little resurgence here. A top ten live album one week and a #1 tribute album 2 weeks later!

So a Kidz Bop EP is going to keep AC/DC out of #1. Pretty sad, indeed.

30-35k for Circa Survive! :) That's great! Blue Sky Noise will certainly debut in the top 10!

Madonna's getting an odd little resurgence here. A top ten live album one week and a #1 tribute album 2 weeks later! Not to mention Madonna and True Blue are now in the US iTunes Top 200 Albums list with Celebration about to re-enter the Top 20 for the first time since its release, and "Like A Prayer" and "4 Minutes" are at #100 and #109 on the Top 200 Songs list respectively. The 'Glee' episode did well with 13.5 million viewers and her appearance on 'The Marriage Ref' some weeks back was well received.

It's not like this a studio album from AC/DC, it's a rehashed (and incomplete) GH acting as a soundtrack for a movie that isn't even out yet. It was never going to sell truckloads the first week.

Few greatest hits albums contain "every" hit anyway True, but this album is more similar to a themed collection than it is even a greatest hits album. It contains some of the "darker" (bad adjective, but I can't think of the right one offhand) songs from the AC/DC catalogue, I'm assuming because they're the ones that fit in well with the movie. Absent are many of the songs which would be likely to sell an actual AC/DC greatest hits album were one to be released, including "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," "Moneytalks," "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)" ... you get the idea.

Billboard.comwww.billboard.com/#/news/glee-madonna-soundtrack-could-top-billboard-1004084692.story?tag=hpfeedEagle-eye industry sources are suggesting that the kids from Fox TV's "Glee" may earn their first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart next week with "The Power of Madonna" soundtrack. The companion album from the show's same-named episode, which aired last night (Apr. 20) to much fanfare, may sell in the range of 100,000 to 125,000 by week's end on May 1 according to industry prognosticators. The best week for a "Glee" set was racked when its "Season One, The Music Volume 2" soundtrack began at No. 3 with 173,000 last December. There is a chance that "The Power of Madonna" could move an even higher number -- possibly approaching that record 173,000 figure -- depending on how the rest of the week shakes out. The "Glee" club and Madonna should trump the week's other big debut -- the "Iron Man 2" soundtrack from rock gods AC/DC. The album -- also on Columbia -- is looking to debut in either the No. 2 or No. 3 slot on the Billboard 200 with between 75,000 and 100,000. The set, tied to the forthcoming film (due in theaters on May 7 in the U.S.), gathers together 15 of the band's classic tracks, including iconic cuts like "Highway to Hell," "Back in Black" and "Thunderstruck." The AC/DC effort was released on Monday, April 19, out of step with the usual Tuesday release date that most new albums in the U.S. receive. Also putting a small wrinkle into AC/DC's first week is the lack of "Iron Man 2's" availability at digital retailers. The band has yet to make its catalog available digitally. Where AC/DC will ultimately debut also depends on the punch the ACM awards may have on Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" (No. 3 this week with 65,000) and how Justin Bieber's "My World 2.0" will do in its fifth week on the tally (it was No. 1 this week with 92,000). Other albums looking to make high entries on the Billboard 200 next week include Sevendust's "Cold Day Memory," Circa Survive's "Blue Sky Noise" and Jimmy Buffett's Wal-Mart-exclusive "Encores."

What other "tribute" artist albums have hit the top ten? Or #1? Madonna's getting an odd little resurgence here. A top ten live album one week and a #1 tribute album 2 weeks later! Why odd? It happens to every other song covered by Glee. Madonna, being who she is, shouldn't be an exception.

Odd because, despite having no actual new music out, Madonna has gotten her very first top ten live album and is now seeing a tribute album to her hit #1 and had a primetime TV show dedicated to her get big ratings.
A song featured on Glee getting a spike in sales is completely normal. The convergence of things happening in her career right now is not normal. I think it's pretty clear what I meant.

Well, not sure if you're implying it's her that got the ratings, but technically the episode was slightly down from last week in ratings...

Well, not sure if you're implying it's her that got the ratings, but technically the episode was slightly down from last week in ratings... Last week was the (hyped) spring premiere after an extended break, the follow-up episode was always going to decline a bit. It happens to all shows. And the articles I read said the drop was smaller than expected.

LADY TAKES A RIDE: Capitol Nashville's Lady Antebellum album, already the year's top seller, has been re-energized by last Sunday's ACMs, and now has an outside shot at moving all the way to #2 on next Tuesday's HITS Top 50 sales chart. Stay tuned as retail continues to shake out.
So, dependent on how AC/DC is doing now, looks like Lady A could be back to between 80-90k. Way to go guys!

Yah- "Glee" saw just a 5% drop in overall viewers and in the demo- a very strong hold.
Sticky & Sweet did sell less than The Confessions Tour, though (even with the Blu-Ray's sales added in). But, still, top 10 placement for the live CD/DVD is good in this climate.

We don't have this week's exact sales figure, do we? Its debut week (including the few street-date violations) was 28,107; #50 this week scanned 8,300 or so. So maybe it did 7,800 or so this past week?
