I don't ill hear it on the lite rock stations i listen to when i go to sleep at night...but who knows....sometimes rock bands are played. Sadly it's most Nickleback. ugh. "My Immortal" from Evanescence an example of a quality rock song getting played on adult contemporary radio. Now "Hesitate" is a little harder in some parts of the song than the original "My Immortal" that is played but it's not too heavy. "Bother" get a little run on Adult Contemporary but not as much as "My Immortal" from Evanescence. But still "Bother" got some run. Now i will never here my favorite artists "Tool", "Eminem", "A Perfect Circle", and etc on Adult Contemporary but imo theres no doubt Maynard has a voice that i think would resonate on adult contemporary radio. I think Corey Taylor has that as well. So will it? Who knows. The following is the lite rock station i listened to at night for a long time. www.allaccess.com/mediabase/q/report/playlist/station/WFMK-FMA few years ago i switched to Home.fm which is a christian station but plays a lot of the same stuff the above station does but just with some more christian artists mixed in. Now this is different than Hot AC. Maybe "Hesitate" has no chance on stations like these but i think it would be well received if it was.

It's getting decent airplay on HAC. Not Top 50 yet, though.

I'm talking AC/Lite Rock.
Bother and My Immortal both get play on the local AC/Lite Rock station here WFMK. But i mean neither of these songs are that hardcore so it doesnt surprise me. Not i do think "Hesitate" may be a little to heavy in some parts.

I feel like Alternative playing this is like Alternative playing Def Leppard - it's a good song, it's just the exact opposite of what Alternative's all about

I wouldn't quite compare it to Alt. playing Def Leppard. Saying that, they played AC/DC & Guns N' Roses a few years back. I don't see how it's that much a stretch. There's still plenty of hard rock/post-grunge bands on the chart. Hell, Shinedown released a ballad last year and it went top 10, so your point doesn't really stand.

Hehe Mat, I love how you're having to simultaneously defend one artist as alternative while making the claim that another artist who is charting better is not alternative. You're certainly at the center of a lot of controversy in these parts this week.
I think both are very much alternative, but Adele is more consistent with the direction alternative is moving toward in the last year. That said, Stone Sour is pretty well-rooted in alternative with multiple significant hits, and I agree that as much as I dislike this song, I'm surprised at how poorly it's doing.

The Crow & The Butterfly, to me, is the polar opposite of this - it had unconvential chords and cutting-edge lyrics, whereas this has cliche chord structure and "I need you...I feel you"-type lyrics - Alternative as a format was started up to avoid playing songs with lyrics like this (not that the lyrics are bad...they're just un-Alternative IMO) Stone Sour as a band might be post-grunge, but this song is definitely not post-grunge at all - it's similar to the late 80s hard rock ballad formula that grunge was trying to get away from

Well this chord progression is pretty boring, but it's less standard than a song like "Animal" from Neon Trees (which is my go-to example for a song that did well on alternative while not meeting my criteria for alternative), and that song hit #1. The lyrics to that song are fairly poppy as well, but maybe the vocal stylings are enough to make it fit at alternative. The format that "Hesitate" is especially ill-suited for to my ears is active rock, but Stone Sour is a staple band there, so of course the stations are all going to play the song anyway.

^To me, Animal is Depeche Mode-based (i. e. Alternative), while Hesitate is Def Leppard-based (i. e. Mainstream Rock) - that's just how it sounds to me though...

I don't think "Hesitate" sounds anything like Def Lepard nor do I think "Animal" sounds anything like Depeche Mode (at least not from a songwriting standpoint). Depeche Mode has way more emotional intensity than Neon Trees, and a MUCH darker sound. Stone Sour also sounds much more serious and they sound like they're trying (and in this case failing imo) to sound epic, which isn't something that's really a part of Def Lepard's aesthetic goals.
"Hesitate" to me sounds more like a Staind power ballad than anything, and historically, those have been huge at alternative. Neon Trees' overall sound is alternative, I'll give you that, but their first two singles were total pop songs. Their latest single sounds more alternative, but the irony there is that it will probably be substantially less successful than the first two on alternative.

Eh...to me, Hesitate is much more similar to Far Away by Nickelback (which they didn't even try to release to Alternative) - I just can't picture Staind writing a song with lyrics like "I need you...I feel you..." - just seems like lyrics like this are the antithesis of what Alternative is all about
Also, Staind's ballads are all in minor keys (at least the verses), and this is in a major key

I think Alt. radio doesn't really have a primary sound at the moment, which is probably why there's been some "discussion" on this board recently over what is and what isn't. "Diamond Eyes" is apparently Alternative, yet so is "Rolling in the Deep". I give up trying to work out what qualifies as Alt, these days, Jamie.
